Where to go in Suffolk /Norfolk
Man- you HAVE to go to the 100th BOMB GROUP Museum —
Check out your USAF History , well OK its USAAF !!
I promise you will be inspired by the place
Mustang Legends
Hey Martin I hope you get to make that event – it may be a MUST SEE event for you , sometimes you just have to do it if that is your passion . BBC did a great documentary segment in Airshow of the P51 – Yeager / Bud Anderson and some of the Tuskegee Airmen – its an awesome segment and accompanied by Music – aerial views from Crazy Horse also . Enough to convert anyone to Mustangs
If you do go it would be great to see your shots
Elitism
Thanks AF for a great recollection . This brought memories of my first exposure to aircraft when I saw a DC 3 taxi in up close at Manchester Airport – I thought it was awesome , my Dad exposed me to aircraft and it has been a great journey and experience .
Re Elitism
I think the Warbird community is opening up here and owners are more agreeable and willing to let folk get up close and personal with their aeroplanes , no small feat considering the value of a P51 and a Spit etc and their time restoring their plane . So many thanks to owners who allow this .
In the USA I have noticed that operators let the public get even closer to their planes – tours through ALL of a B17 – kids scrambling all over them and the planes being mobbed /surrounded by the public ,having their skins , guns , tyres touched after shutdown and all safety precautions observed , SO maybe the operators in the US are a bit further ahead than us and maybe in the UK we will follow this trend and get away from the” DONT TOUCH “Mentality .Though I understand many owners vary in their feelings about this and understandably so .
To summarise I feel our American friends are that bit more giving and willing to share their planes with Joe Public . The day of the reserved and Stiff Upper Lip Brit is diminishing though so maybe in 5-10 years or so we will be eqaul to the Level of Access the American Public now enjoy
Would be great to hear your account and see shots particularly from LA PAZ – I am sure they must have a least one C46 still going ?? and a Convair or two plus the forementioned .
Why dont you go to one of the operators and ask to pay for a flight in a C46 or DC3 / 6 – Now that would be interesting indeed
which aircraft
Been in a 17 and an at6 recently -that was pretty neat 75 feet over the Pacific in a Steep Left Bank -yikes – want to do a Stearman next – what a chunky and characterful aircraft

for a shot of one of the 4 Hun Aircraft in the formation – 4 were marked in USAF Markings and repelled the Hun invaders – great fun

for some great shots of March AFB Museum where Return to Glory now lives
First shot show Miss Angela at Palm Springs Air Museum – she wasn’t a Bolivian plane but flew as a Firebomber
I took that photo myself during my visit of Jan 16th 05 ,Luckily a friend and ex 92BG Pilot Vern ,volunteers at the Museum and opened up that 17 Just for us as I must have been pestering him all day to do it , at first he said he didn’t know where the key was but he asked another volunteer who knew where it was – yippee says I !, an American friend Dave and I spent maybe 40 minutes just going over switches , systems and taking shots – awesome – that phrase ” Kid in a Candy Store “springs to mind
Reason why I sat in right hand seat too was I wanted to get a shot for a friend of mine who was shot down on his first mission with the 100th BG on Aug 17th 43 – he witnessed numerous frontal attacks thru that from window
CP891 EX FRIGORICOS REYES
Just posted a shot on TinyPic.com of the Ex Bolivian B17 cp891 – Well now she is Return to Glory at March , the Control Wheel yoke cap has Douglas embossed on it.I dont know if that has been added from the Volunteers restoring her at March but she was a Douglas built example .I will post some more when I get time
Bolivian B17’s
Thanks for that link – great shot of the Bolivian B24 – I saw a colour shot of that in Airliner World – the B24 was more derelict though with no engines or nose cone – funny thing is I like to see photos of derelict planes just waiting to be rescued

Found the shots from B17 Man of F BEEA ‘s destruction on the 4th page I think of the above thread – some footage of the crash is on The Other Stars of Memphis Belle – its quite grainy though .
I guess there are so many amazing shots and memories from this film that this thread will continue to be a popular one ,it make you wonder wil they make another B17 Movie – has it been done to death ?
B17 Flights
Thanks Geedee – great shots from Fuddy Duddy – she looks in nice shape .
I agree about the plane being alive with engine and control wires vibrating – I had a ride in Yankee Lady at Reading PA in 2002 and getting in the plane with motors running kinda scared me because it brought it home to me that those guys really did put their necks on the line and do those missions – it was an awesome experience – hope to do it again one day , maybe in 909

B26 Fuselage
Well I hope you find your fuselage B17 man , there is the awesome example called Flak Bait at the Smithsonian in Washington – whats great is the whole plane is in here original chipped , worn and faded paint scheme – truly awesome

CP891 EX FRIGORICOS REYES
A few shots from MARCH AFB CA taken on the 15th Jan by me , had a great time in that 17 ,pity the oxygen tube in the way in the whole cockpit shot , it was warm but not too hot – imagine that cockpit in July
This B17 has an AMAZING HISTORY see:
http://members.cox.net/b17brian/b17/Starduster/index.htm
She was a Douglas built example and flew with the 15th AF in Italy though not sure if she saw combat
If anyone wants any large versions of the shots let me know
mmm trying to upload shots but it keeps saying invalid type !still cant add photos a day later
Bolivian B17’s
Lucky you ! – I dont think there are any B17’s left in Bolivia – maybe not even parts – maybe there is a C46 Commando or two and probably a bunch of DC3’S and 6’s – this trip sounds so interesting – I wish I could go and get shots of the surrounding Mountains around LA PAZ and El Alto (Highest International Airport in the World) 11,000 ft .Hope you have a walk around oxygen bottle .Your trip would make a great thread
Bolivian B17’s
Went out to Sunny California in January for the 100th BG Mini Reunion at Palm Springs – great to see their B17 Miss Angela Fly , anyways I also went out to MARCH AFB and toured Return to Glory which is the Ex Bolivian Meat Hauler CP 891 – It was awesome sitting in the Left Hand seat – BTW Stephen Piercey sat here also in the Mid 70’s When he was in Bolivia , pity he had a fatal air accident back home – his shots are just beautiful and in the book Superprops
Anyone find any shots of 17’s in Bolivia ??
I will start a thread on my visit to March as soon as I get time
Best Ron
