there was a video of a spectacular though non-fatal F22 crash
just as it attempted to take off.

looking at the blue table on the right, and the EAP which looks
to the Tech demo of the EF concept, the proj started in 1983
when EAP consortium was formed. EAP flew between 1986-1991
to prove various things I assume. and this after the partners had
done DFCS on two other a/c from 1977. between 1991-94 various
political and FCS issues seems to have slowed the proj then it
picked up pace.
Quite a tortuous and interesting path. took 20 years
from starting work on the TD to entering sqdn service.
So LCA still has 4.5 yrs to enter the first sqdn 😀 😀
will meet the date with 1 yr to spare 🙂
from dailytimes.com.pk – more confirmation that fincantieri is it.
Indian Navy to get another aircraft carrier
WASHINGTON: An Italian shipbuilding company has signed two agreements with the Cochin Shipyard in India for the construction of a new aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy.
According to state-owned Fincantieri SpA, it will assess the Indian ship’s design and will be responsible for its “propulsion system integration,” while also supplying the engineering and design for the ship’s ancillary propulsion systems and main plants.
Unlisted Fincantieri did not disclose the details of the deal. India’s planned 38,000-tonne Air Defence Ship will be one of the largest aircraft carriers in service with conventional propulsion based on 4 GE LM 2500 gas turbines. khalid hasan
didnt Airbus A320 in the initial days meet with some accidents due to conditions the FCS was not designed to properly handle ?
I recall an incident of the vertical tail getting caught in the spiral
wingtip vortices of a preceding jet on multiple occasions. the A300 crash in brooklyn was due to such?
thanks for the article. May I assume Super Darter and a version of
Grifo is the probable choice and RC-400 is off the list ?
is the A-darter or a new version of U-darter the WVR missile of choice?
🙂 vintage DDM.

Italian Company To Design India’s Third Carrier
By VIVEK RAGHUVANSHI, NEW DELHI
The Indian Navy’s aircraft carrier project, the Air Defense Ship (ADS),
has
taken a leap forward with the Defence Ministry’s award of a $30 million
contract to Fincantieri’s Naval Vessel Business Unit to help
prepareconcept,
design and implementation plans.
The Genoa, Italy-based firm also will build and integrate the
propulsion
systems for the vessel, a Navy official said.
The Defence Ministry also considered bids by DCN International, Paris, and Izar Construcciones Navales, Madrid.
…….
Many other parts, including the hull and the landing deck, will be
built by
Mumbai-based Larsen & Toubru, the official said.
……..
Fincantieri’s design and construction of the Italian Navy’s Cavour
carrier
tipped the scales in favor of the Italian shipyard, the official said.
The ADS is expected to be of similar shape and weight, displacing
40,000
metric tons and measuring 57 meters wide and 252 meters long. Its top
speed
will be 32 knots. It will carry 1,200 sailors and 18 combat aircraft,
including Sea Harrier jump jets and MiG-29K fighters, and 10 Advanced
Light
Helicopters.
……
The vessel will be powered by four General Electric LM 2500 gas
turbines
built by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., Bangalore.
….
The Navy in January signed a long-delayed deal with Russia to purchase
16
MiG-29K aircraft, worth $750 million, for the Admiral Gorshkov.
so are you referring to the Super Darter which is radar guided or the second 180mm missile which has IIR guidance ?
the kentron website has no mention of Super Darter but mentions
the A-darter with IIR is in concept development phase. Since
you article dates from 1995 and the webpage is current I can only assume they started on it lately coz a concept doesnt take 9 years to define.
http://www.kentron.co.za/Home.asp?Page=airtoair
A-Darter, a fifth-generation missile system, is currently in the concept development phase. The missile incorporates a high-agility airframe, greatly improved manoeuvrability and an extended range. An imaging IR seeker ensures excellent countermeasure rejection and very accurate terminal guidance.
are you saying the Super Darter is called V-4 for the PAF ?
the R-darter is called V-4 in the SAAF and was introduced in 2000.
http://defence-data.com/africa2000/pageafa15.htm
the A-darter btw is reported as a dia of 164mm not 180mm
http://www.aviationnow.com/media/pdf/spec_04_missiles.pdf
(a) what is the range of A-darter ?
(b) range of R-darter ?
(c) range of super darter if such exists ?
Sad. Alang was a real hell-hole with zero supervision of safety and pollution. Some efforts are underway to shakedown and regularize that unruly place.
what does the rafale and M2K-5 use ? the M2K is supposed to have a very good FBW system and supposedly the first a/c that went without a crash in its test pgm.
oops I didnt realize there was a static prototype and 4th is really
the 5th.
Maybe they can buy Mica which I am sure matra would be willing
to integrate with Grifo.
so is the 4th prototype going to deploy the equipment selected by PAF ? any idea when its expected to fly and
with RC400 or Grifo radar ?
I have a PDF copy of a detailed article on P17 from Naval Forces 6/2003 magazine. If any of you want to read it, send a PM to me with email address.
Due to copyright it cannot be posted here.
the gripen pilots head x 2 is approximately the space infront
of the canopy frame. the LCA photo is pilots head x 3 .
shame shame yahoo, quick search for more photos!
you have also done a good job of proving the nose cone base is
around 1m in diameter comparing to the size of a average head.
QED. anything around 600-650mm will fit neatly.
has it occured to you fruitcake to see if the gripen has a shorter
black portion in front and steeper angle to its fwd windscreen ?
No I guess not. Try it.
