LONDON — BAE Chief Executive Ian King has killed off hopes the company might return to the negotiating table with the United Arab Emirates over the sale of Typhoon jets.

“It’s done, we have no plans to revive it,” he told reporters in London Jan 22.

Swedish defence contractor Saab has been slammed over claims of attempting to influence a referendum in Switzerland that could determine whether or not the Swiss air force purchases 22 new JAS Gripen fighter jets.

Swiss Social Democratic MP Evi Allemann claims that Saab has been quietly financing campaigners in favour of the deal, worth an estimated 3.1 billion Swiss francs ($3.47 billion).

Is the F-15 combat loaded??? BTW The F-35 is a Strike Fighter which is just another name for a Multi-Role Fighter. (Fighter-Bomber back in the day)

I would term F-15, F-16, Gripen, Rafale, Typhoon as fighter-bombers. I think the term bomber-fighter would be more appropriate for F-35.

The IAF’s deputy chief of air staff (DCAS), its top procurement official, declared the FGFA’s engine was unreliable, its radar inadequate, its stealth features badly engineered, India’s work share too low, and that the fighter’s price would be exorbitant by the time it enters service.

I think there is the reason..

Difficult for India’s development work share to be much when the T-50 is already designed and flying.

Russia Can’t Deliver on Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft: IAF

MUMBAI — The Indian Air Force (IAF) has done a stunning about-turn, sharply criticising the showpiece Indo-Russian project to co-develop a futuristic Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA). Even as New Delhi and Moscow finalise a $6 billion deal to co-develop an FGFA with capabilities tailor-made for India, the IAF has alleged the Russians would be unable to meet their promises about its performance.

IIRC Switzerland calls everything part of the army, & within the army, there are land & air forces.

Thanks for that clarification. Still leaves the question: what will be cut so that funds can be diverted to finance Gripen?

As a matter of fact, people aren’t voting on the acquisition itself, but Swiss have to approve or reject the way it will be financed (taking 300 mio a year from the budget army for the Gripen fund for 10 years, which you normally can’t do). Yet the left parties are telling everyone that money would be better spend elsewhere (which might be true), but rejecting the Gripen doesn’t mean that money would be automatically spend in other areas, since it is from the army’s budget. On the other hand, the 3 billions of economic compensation invested in the local industry would be very welcome.

Interesting to learn that the funds will come from the army’s budget. What is going to be cut back to release 300 million a year to be spent on Gripen instead? It will be interesting to hear since I see Denmark having to make cuts in the Danish forces if it chooses to buy F-35.

I guess the Swiss government will be stressing the offsets available to try to sell the Gripen proposal to its citizens.

    Report dated 17th Jan 2014:

“Switzerland’s Federal Council has today announced that a national public referendum is to be held 18 May concerning the procurement of Gripen E.”

Any Swiss readers know which way the vote is likely to go?

@obligatory, Thanks for your unchauvinistic comment.

I think he means by betrayal not to obey to the usa when they sanpped their fingers in order to go destroy stealthy mass destruction weapons…?

    You mean Iraq?

@TomcatVIP, I still don’t know what you are talking about…

Given that it’s cheap, effective (for it’s price) and generous industrial offsets are available, I can see this going Gripen’s way. They be silly not to choose it.

Unfortunately The Netherlands has been silly and has not chosen Gripen. To aid Belgian and Dutch air force co-operation the two countries ideally need the same fighter type.

So let’s get a far field look for a second.

Fr did betray the US on a major foreign policy concern just to feel allowed to tweet a little bit longer on the Arab peninsula. Then there was the sand storm… And then the Kuwait LOI….

Frankly, it’s time for the Fr to make some washing up among their think tank. Because tanks they are not. No more than a golden sink at least…

What are you referring to? I do not understamd what you are saying.

I am not saying you made it up, I just think the fact that it comes from a French website and hasn’t been picked up by any of the English language trade journals makes it a bit suspect.

La Tribune is quite a major publication IIRC. What La Tribune says (my translatation): “According to several sources which are in agreement, the Eurofighter consortium (BAE Systems, EADS and Finmeccanica) have signed an LoI (Letter of intent) with this Arabian peninsular emirate.”

As you say, it seems a little strange that La Tribune claims several sources for this development yet the English language aviation press makes does not mention it.

Has that Kuwiat thing firmed up? It seems fishy to me. French news agency reporting a conversation or somesuch…..

I read about the progress in Kuwait on a French website on which it said that a letter of intent had been signed. Can’t find what I read now but I presume there will be months of negotiation before the terms of any contract are finalised – if the process gets that far.
