“As a photographer its impossible to get good shots,”
If you are a photographer you should be more than capable of getting good shots.
It’s the same old chestnut….it’s a Museum, not a photographic studio filled with planes.
The land warfare hall at Duxford is very dark, but this doesn’t detract from the exhibits. I’d say the same about the BoB Hall.
‘Milestones’ was opened on the 17th Dec 2003.
“I will add that there were many cars already parked there. Who they belonged to I can’t say.”
At a rough guess I’d say they belonged to the people getting it ready for your visit at 10:00 and the people who keep the collection secure at night.
“IWM refuse to release their former CC material in a way that would place it in a true public domain β shame on them!”
Not a shame at all, far better they can use it to make money for the Museum.
It’s a fine line between ‘need’ and ‘want’….:)
Nice work on the AC, but without doubt the worst page I have seen this year. Makes you wonder why they bother presenting the information, when itβs done so badly.
Their skill obviously lies in the area of aircraft recovery rather than IT. And given the choice between paying for an all singing, all dancing website that would meet with your approval, and spending that cash on recovery/restoration, they have obviously gone with the latter.
Would you rather not have the website and the information/photographs it contains because it’s not up to scratch?
Ross,
Otherwise we would consider it fair game to simply desecrate church graves and cemetaries once the last occupant has been buried for 100 years or more. While cementaries might reclaim burial plots over time, I am certain it is done with a due process and certain respect for any recovered remains.
Mark Pilkington
IIt seems fair game to desecrate cemeteries….St Pancras in London being one of many that got the Victorian equivalent of bulldozing.
As for the removal/disturbance of human remains, where would the cutoff point lie?
Is it OK to disturb WW1 fliers?
What about graves from the Crimea?
Excavations that uncover Roman remains whilst digging foundations for buildings in London?
Are we to presume, that if there is a chance there are living relatives, that graves/crash sites/battlefield cannot be touched?
Or are we actually concerned with the deceased person themselves, and how they would have felt?
Moggy
any civilian death is needless, really a case of ethics, think of the deliberate fire storms that they caused in some of the german cities.
cheers
With some of these civilians working for the war effort, the level of innocence is very hard to apply.
In modern situations such as Afghanistan, where we are not at war with the country, just at war in it, civilain innocence would certainly apply.
But a war between nations, where the whole population is supporting the war through direct work in factories and other means of support on the home front?
My grandfather during WW2 worked for ESSO as a tanker driver. Innocent civilian or part of the war effort?
I would think it was the latter.
No such thing as an innocent civilian.
Who cares what he thinks? You have a license and permission from the landowner, so go for it. This topic has been discussed recently.
Or do you wish to recover this aircraft using a teaspoon over a period of months?Cheers
Cees
No matter you experience over the last 20? years, this comment shows a breathtaking arrogance.
Do any members have any idea what it could be from? Is it from an aircraft, or is it something like an officer chair with a harness added?
Johnnie
It’s from a Catalina.
I loved the old Flambards collection, the aircrfat were sometimes in a poor state due to lack of facilities and funding (and latterly lack of priority), but the place and workers there really made it a good place to visit.
.
Do some of you actually read back through your posts before hitting the return key?
So, according to you, as long as the welcome is friendly and the building is pristine who care what happens to the exhibits? As long as I can see them who cares what state my great great grandchildren see them in.
Typical of the whning on here. Get some facts right before you complain. (eg. someone suggetsed an airstrip for light aircraft at the museum, forgetting that single engined aircraft aren’t allowed to fly in this particular bit of London airspace.)
No wonder no-one listens to your concerns.
That is utter rubbish, the lighting is crap – simple as that, so don’t try using that old chestnut.
“Utter rubbish”….. this is obviously based on your lifetime of employment as a photographer then. They Museum may or may not have many problems…intensity of lighting is certainly not one of them.
Good to see Kev35’s posting on this, wise words at last.
Robbo,
I have no idea if the cleaners lights were on or not! In the interests of presenting a fair case, attached is an image of the Me110 with as little ambient lighting as I could muster.
Still loooks OK to me.
It no longer has the live feel, its too much like a museum rather than airfield following the days flying.
Richard
So many tired comments on here, given without thought to the actual circumstances encountered by the Museum, but this must be the classic of the post…
It’s too much like a Museum because…hey…it’s a museum.
“Lets just be clear – the RAFM doesn’t suffer because it’s underfunded. Money is available and what’s needed could be found.”…thanks for that ‘JDK’…you seem to have your finger firmly on the pulse, why don’t you enlighten us all?
And as for the old chestnut about lighting levels in the BoB…a poor photographer blames his equipment or circumstance for bad shots…the attached will show that lighting levels are perfectly OK for photography in the BoB…
However, like all subjects that arouse passion such as this, I am also aware that there is truth on both sides. BUt think on this; do you really, REALLY think that the managemnt of the RAFM like nothing better than to antagonise, alienate and generally hack off any segment of its target audience? The sensible answer is of course no.
I take it none of the people who are offended by ‘people dying in aircraft’ have enjoyed “12 o’clock High” then?
Or ever watched a bit of gun camera footage.
