    16kts?

Well, on that note, as they , I’m out.

Best of luck in the future but there is perhaps a reason why this sort thing hasn’t been at looked before.

So if the max speed is 27kts, what is the stall speed?

I have no desire to prick anyone’s bubble but some of your figures don’t really work.

A sea level top speed of of 50km/h is only 27kts. What sort of wing section would stay unstalled at that speed. If 50km/h is the max speed presumably it takes off at less than that. A stiff breeze would see it exceed VMO ….on the ground!

36km is 118000ft! It will need a major (and heavy) pressurization system to ensure that the crew can exist at all. Any problem with the ECS would kill the crew in seconds if they have no space suits.

A propeller simply isn’t going to work at that height. There is not enough air.

    Your original question

Could solar powered passenger planes replace Zeppelin type air ships in the future ?

The answer is not yet…if ever.

No, it needs a source of air to continually pressurize the cabin. Conventional aircraft usually bleed it off the engines. 25km is spacesuit territory. Lying down…..

The Unknown Soldier by Neil Hanson is well worth a read. The story of three different soldiers whose remains were never found. It also goes into the history of the Cenotaph and the aftermath of the conflict. The bits you don’t often hear about.

I understand that and I disagree with much of what he and others have said but the way he is being bullied and insulted by others is a sad testament to the general lack of tolerance shown on this forum to those who dare to disagree. The result of a largely unmoderated forum I guess.

So where would you get the air for the pressurization system. Being pressurized adds a lot of weight to the structure , especially one that could cope with 65000ft!

Another thread turns into a insult-trading exchange with a bit of playground bullying thrown in. Those who dare to put their points of view forward that may differ from others should be free to do so without the pathetic name calling and insults that seem to be rife around here nowadays.

There is a disturbing lack of tolerance being displayed in this thread.

    That hasn’t taken long……

What I posted on post #16

Tolerance of other’s beliefs and faiths would go a long way to fixing some the world’s problem. This of course applies just as much to non-believers and their lack of tolerance to those who have faith as it does to those religions less tolerant than other faiths.

    and again on post #167

What is depressing about this thread is that the avowed atheists are just as intolerant of other’s beliefs and faiths as any religious zealot.

    Depressing indeed

Anyone thinking that capital punishment is a good idea should look at the case of Stefan Kiszko, or the Guildford 4 or Timothy Evans ……..

    So we shouldn’t bother then?

The 100 year anniversary is a great away educating and re-educating everyone into the causes and circumstances that lead to war. We should be embracing the opportunity to do so.

Absolutely right j_jza80. I don’t see how there can be any justifiable complaint against remembering or commemorating one of the most important wars in mankind’s history.

It isn’t massively witty though is it… using my own comment back at me. Not the sort of thing one might expect of an “original thinker”.
