Nope – you’ve got me there. Don’t know what you’re talking about.
Presumably you were OK when “lefties” brought about better pay, safer working conditions and shorter working hours etc. etc…..but no, you don’t need “lefties” do you.
You have me baffled now. Now you and your mates in your rufty tufty job get along. A minute ago the left had spoiled it all for you. Which is it?
The problem is that you are blaming the left. I have to do diversity training, respect courses etc. A lefty thing? Hardly. I work for a large US defence company – not particularly left wing.
I pleased all your mates get on and I hope that you never have to suffer bullying abuse of any kind, in the work place or anywhere else for that matter.
then S0d off Cuba
Charming. I hope Cuba knows about this.
Re 126
Don’t be a silly billy. If we are to debate this or anything else argue sensibly. We’re not discussing ‘making rules’, we’re discussing Parliamentary legislation – secondary not primary – to impose on a largely hostile nation a French inspired system of measurements backed up by the threat of imprisonment.
Oh My God. Prison? Really? Ah the French are to blame. I wondered when that would appear. The simplest solution would be to use metric. It isn’t difficult.
You appear to be advocating the use of Parliament to push thru’ generally unpopular measures, thus affecting the way we live our lives.
That’s what parliament does or do you think that everyone should agree with all legislation that has been passed? I know I don’t; especially in the last 4 years or so.
So, when the cost and effort attached to looking after the chronically sick and aged in our society becomes too burdensome, you will support the inevitable call for legal culling of the old in spite of a national chorus of rejection of such a law ?
Where on earth did that come from? Who mentioned old age culling?
You are indeed the archetypal ‘leftie’.
I wondered how long it would be before you resorted to that. There is no surer sign that you’ve lost the argument than to resort to name-calling.
I apologize for the snafu-ism. It won’t happen again.
A “rufty tufty” type place is it? Well good for you. I can only assume that you would have been one of those sniggering and shouting obscenities at the women who work in your factory or wherever it is. Not realizing how upsetting and frightening it might be for them. I mean it’s only banter and you need to have your fun in your rufty tufty workplace don’t you. Who cares who it upsets as long as you’re happy eh?
A field you created – nice.
Also Snafu & Del…..being the peoples champions which you claim be to be (leftie power to the people & all that) I hope you have contributed to Jims fund, you know, like the hated & ‘far right fascist’ DrS HAS 😉

YES….OF COURSE YOU HAVE…BEING FOR THE PEOPLE & ALL THAT 😉
That’s pretty low. Even for you.
Re 39
“It looks like English?”
Bit like your homogenisation when I think that you meant harmonisation. That gave me some amusement – thank you !
From the Oxford English dictionary
(adjective homogenized) Make uniform or similar: a homogenized society
Is that the best you can do? Criticize correct usage of words? Another sign of an argument lost. Again.
I notice you’ve conveniently forgotten your pathetic attempt to dismiss workplace harassment as lacking a sense of humour. Strangely enough it doesn’t surprise me.
If the Libyans don’t like it they know what they can do.
Why have a go at the Libyans? They haven’t done anything and I doubt they care one way or another.
he believed the fence to have been erected out of fear of offending the Libyan troops
David Crowe, chairman of the Friends of the Eighth denied the fence had anything to do with the Libyan troops and instead said the fence was erected for “security reasons.”
“The barracks is undergoing refurbishment in preparation for the Libyans and the fence could have been added to the list of things to be done when it shouldn’t have been.”
A non-story based on rumour and supposition. Good for getting passengers for the outrage bus though.
Ignore it, I think he deliberately trying to wind some of us up. (and, I might add, failing as far as I’m concerned)
One thing that would cure all of this animosity is tolerance. And understanding. The two things that cure this would be tolerance and understanding. And manners, The three things……
As someone once said, Moses only needed one commandment “Be nice to each other”.
What about white rap-artists? Or young white men? What about Asians (young or middle-aged) using it? What about broadcasting it on the BBC? Or broadcasting tracks on the BBC with the ‘offensive’ lyrics edited out; is that acceptable?
Can you call Jeremy Clarkson a smart-**** because you are (presumably) white and middle-aged? Is is acceptable if a young black man called Jeremy Clarkson a smart-****? What if Jeremy Clarkson complained to the BBC that he’d been called something he found offensive (and I’m sure he has) on a programme that was broadcast; would the person who made those comments be forced to beg for forgiveness or risk jeopardising their career?
Good Grief! So many questions!
I Have no idea if any white rap artists or Asian ones use the “N” word. I doubt that they do somehow but as I said, it is all about the context of the usage.
If you noticed I didn’t call Clarkson anything. I said that he was trying be a smart ****, the implication being that he fell short, by some way.
I’m sure if Jeremy Clarkson wanted to take offense at some of the names he’d been called then I’m sure he could. The number of people that have called him names must run into the millions by now though.
spitfireman
Sadly, I see the voice of reason has vacated this thread……..
Nope, still here. 😉
As usual, what is missed in all discussion about insults is the context.
Going up to an old friend with a smile and greeted with him “You old B****r” is very different to going up to a total stranger and saying in an aggressive way “You old B****r” . In the same way white middle-aged men using the “N” word means one thing. Black rap artists using it is quite another.
If you have the ability to brush off insults then good for you, many can’t or suffer in silence and have ended up taking drastic measures. To brush it off and say get a sense of humour or a thicker skin is hardly helpful in these cases. A bit of light-hearted “banter” is one thing but consistent and relentless bullying is another.
Some may welcome sexual comments in workplace (it may be the only time they get such attention) but some don’t and find it threatening and insulting.
What’s pretty obvious when you listen to what Clarkson said is that he was trying to be clever by mumbling the “N” word and was horrified to find out that the mumble didn’t disguise it much. That is his fault entirely and he would have been better using another phrase or missing out that bit completely, rather trying to be a smart-**** and having it backfire.
Having said that, it is a rather pathetic sideshow and there are bigger issues around at the moment but as Snafu said, we seem more comfortable when discussing trivia.
What’s the difference, exactly?
It is about context and intent. None of the examples you’ve quoted are intended to be insulting or demeaning.
Clarkson used it unthinkingly – hardly racist but ill-advised at best.
I think if you ended up upside down in a ditch, not having radio reception would be the least of your worries.
Hands free kits are cheap and easy to use. Many cars have them built in nowadays. No excuses really.
One incident did amuse me the other day. I was sitting at a set of lights in the right lane waiting to turn right. The left lane had a filter light for turning left. (The junction of Ringway Road on to Styal Road near Manchester Airport for anyone that knows it). The filter changed to green and the first car in the queue didn’t move. Too busy, head down, texting. I thought Uh oh, there will be toot on the horn any second now. But no. The woman in the car behind was doing the same thing. Brilliant.
Making a phone call while driving is bad enough but texting is so much more dangerous and I see instances daily.
Does anyone here wear socks with their sandals? Apparently it is now the thing to do..
That implies that you already have sandals. I think we should be told. Personally I think sandals are wrong. Just wrong.
Discuss, at exceedingly long and tedious length.
Oh OK. Thanks for that.
Like many others, after taking time to reply and give the matter some thought, it’s disappointing to see the thread deleted completely, especially one with my name in it. 😉 Perhaps I was right, only trivia is discussed here.
