It must be as they are just using 2 bmi 330’s for crew training in preparation for the arrival of their own 340’s.

I do like the simplicity of the colour scheme on that Bulgarian Air Charter 154.

RE: New airline, and Apple Vaccations has already nicked a 757 from thomas cook!

Apple Vacations have been borrowing our aircraft and crews every winter for several years. For those that want it we can either be based in Milwaukee, Chicago or Detroit and fly to Mexico and the Caribbean for 6 months over winter.

Almost every charter airline has a set up with some one else in order to utilise their aircraft and crew over the winter. It is entirely voluntary but can be VERY lucrative to those who chose to do it. I personally do not as I have done a lot of world travel during my 9 years of long haul and would rather enjoy the quiet winter period in the UK. I worked 1 day in November and have 3 days work in December, all while still being on full pay!

    RE: A Question for Wysiwyg

Apologies for the lateness of the reply but I have been busy for the last few days. Looking at a map, the main piece of airspace above you is the class D Birmingham CTA (control area) from 1500′ up to FL45 (4500′) which is used for postioning aircraft for landing onto R15 or departing R33 at BHX. Above FL45 is the class A Daventry CTA which continues right up to the base of the airways above it. Slightly to the west of Walsall (running NW-SE, routing Wallasey-Honiley) is B3 with a base of FL55 and slightly to the east is A1 running NNW-SSE, routing Manchester-Honiley) with a base at FL80. The term ‘U’ in front of an airway designator actually stands for ‘upper’, although it is frequently (incorrectly) referred to as uniform, and means the higher part of that airway, if it exists. A1 becomes UA1 above FL195 and B3 becomes UB3. You will generally find the jets in the upper airways (except when climbing and descending) and the turboprops and the 146’s in the lower airways.

Military aircraft are a law unto themselves and frequently fly right through the middle of airways with no communication with the civilian controllers operating that sector. I have on several occasions had to be vectored around military radar contacts in the airways by pissed off controllers who have had no contact from the military traffic.

The procedure onto R05 makes the old Hong Kong approach look like childs play!

RE: Firefighters strike – a review.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-12-02 AT 01:02 PM (GMT)]Remuneration for employment generally rewards 2 things, skill and danger.

Doctor – skill high, danger low – pay high
Airline pilot – skill high, danger low – pay high
Sportsmen – skill high, danger low – pay high
Electricity line men – skill medium, danger very high – pay high
Firemen – skill medium, danger very high – PAY LOW!!!
Crane driver – skill low, danger high – pay high
Politicians – skill low, danger nil – PAY HIGH!!!

Why is nobody questioning why politician pay is so high rather than talking about small change (in comparison) with the firemen?

    RE: Excel Airways 757?

I had heard that Excel were looking at getting their own 767’s to bring the operation fully in-house.
There was also a rumour of Astraeus getting 767’s to try to win the prized Kuoni contract.

I would love a jump seat in a turboprop into and out of London City. And just to be completely greedy I’d also like to go island hopping with Loganair around the Scottish islands, particularly a beach landing (Barra?).

    RE: Can anyone explain this?!

It was a feeder service based in Maastricht. It didn’t last long and was before I joined the company in the mid-80’s. I remeber also seeing a 727 with a hybrid Virgin scheme. Can’t remember the story behind that though. There was also a fully painted (with the exception of a grey fuselage underside) Virgin 767-300 which was borrowed from Martinair in the mid-90’s.

RE: Firefighters strike – a review.

Let me try to put a different slant on this. The following is also completely analogous for firemen.

Some while ago a cabin crew member came into the flightdeck while I was twiddling my thumbs on a return night sector from the Mediterrannean. There was absolutely nothing going on at the time. The cabin crew member asked us if we felt guilty being paid so much for doing so little. The response was that 99% of the time we are grotesquely overpaid, however 1% of the time we are the most underpaid people on the planet. As a passenger, believe me you don’t want me to earn my money!

I wonder how opinion towards the fire service would change if a terror attack similar in style to Sept 11th occured in London? Do the population of NY value their fire department?
