RE: Firefighters strike – a review.

    [updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-12-02 AT 05:59 PM (GMT)]Just a few thoughts:

1 – If you want a 20% pay rise you ask for 40% and split the difference (basic rule of haggling). They will settle for 16% but what do you think they would have got if they asked for 16% in the first place?

2 – Where were all the complaints when the MP’s gave themselves a 40% pay rise earlier. What modernisation did the MP’s stand in order to qualify for their rise?

3 – Everyday on the radio I hear some trucker phone in saying that they do a dangerous job so why don’t they get a pay rise. Well anyone that wants to compare driving a truck to going into a burning building needs their head examining.

I am not declaring full support of the firemen in this dispute, I am just concerned that there are a lot of warped facts going about.

Yes that’s more like it for the A330 regs.

    RE: Cyprus Airways A330

Up until a few years ago Airbus and Boeing had completely different design philosophies. The Americans built their planes like their cars and their women – big, strong and built to last. The downside of this is that they carried huge amounts of weight in their structure which meant that they had to use great big gas guzzling engine to propel them but heck, fuel was cheap. Airbus foresaw the fact that the accountant was becoming more and more important (are you happy now Mongu?) in the airlines management so they decided to try a different approach that would appeal to the money men. They calculated the minimum possibe safe structure required to do the job and invested in modern technology for weight saving (such as using fly by wire) and then used engines just big enough to meet performance requirements. This gives them a phenomenally low fuel burn. They also concentrated on establishing their own leasing program and won large orders which meant they could heavily discount. If the price of oil hadn’t risen I doubt Airbus would have fared so well but it has and they are now here to stay. One of their wisest moves was to tie in customers by the shrewd use of type commonality. This means that if airline A operates 737’s and airline B operates A320’s, if they both want a bigger aeroplane airline A buys the 757 and airline B buys the A321. Airline A has to send its pilots on a complete and expensive new type rating course and then those pilots cannot fly the 737 again in times of need without leaving the 757. Airline B’s pilots are automatically qualified to fly the A321 (as well as the A319 and A318, and only require a minimal conversion for the A330, A340 and probably the A380) and most importantly can interchange on a day to day basis.

If I remember correctly they operate up to 10000′ (FL100) with passengers on board (due to lack of pressurisation) and occasionally nip up to 12000′ (FL120) when carrying freight if they need to get over the top of weather.

G-FCLA,B,C,D,E & F were Flying Colours aircraft (as far as I know)
    G-FCLG,H,I,J & K are ex-Transaero (the old Russian outfit)
G-JMCD & E are my joint favourites and were new from Boeing
G-JMCF is my least favourite and is an old Canadian register aeroplane
G-JMCG – don’t know where that one came from!
    G-JMAA & B were new from Boeing

    RE: Wysiwyg?

    B757-200 – G-FCLA to G-FCLK and G-JMCD to G-JMCG
    B757-300 – G-JMAA and G-JMAB
    A330-200 – G-JMCB and G-JMCC (I think, I can’t quite remember!)
    A-320-200 – Haven’t a clue!

I can get you the bus reg’s but I’m sure someone will jump in and save me the effort!

Condor are planning to psrk up 6 B757-300’s and there is a rumour we may borrow them instead. I’ll let you know if this goes ahead. G-JMCD has gone to the american register for the winter operating under lease to Ryan International from Chicago to the Carribean and Mexico. G-JMCE is about to depart to Mikwaukee to do the same routes but staying on the UK register. 2 more 757’s may go for a short while to cover for A320’s that are supposed to be there but are going to be in the paint shop instead.

I can give you the registrations but I haven’t a clue about airframe/constructors numbers. Is that ok?

Sheds are not pressurised. It would be difficult to pressurise a Shed because of the square section fuselage (reminiscent of the square windowed Comet 1 saga).

Mongu – yes, the Shed is damn ugly BUT it wins phenomenal support from me because of it’s design ergonomics (which I raved about in a previous thread).

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-11-02 AT 09:57 PM (GMT)]Sneaky quiz Andrew – asking 11 questions and pretending there are only 10!

    Q5 (number 1) – Haven’t a clue (deeply embarassed!)
    Q5 (number 2) – Garuda Indonesia
    Q8 – B757-300
    Q9 – 18
Q10 – nearly Royal Brunei Airlines (but 1 o too many and missing an e)

Am I right in saying that Druk was a joint launch customer for the RJX with FlyBe?
