    RE: Baggage overweight?

I really wish I could come out with some nugget of wisdom but I really don’t know what to say! I think it’s just going to be the way of things now in the same way that we inherited the new security procedures after 911.

Scary stuff. That dog could have bought the plane down.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-11-02 AT 11:29 PM (GMT)]JMC and Thomas Cook are linked to Caledonian from the past. There isn’t actually any link to BCal other than the word Caledonian.

JMC Holidays will still exist but as one of many brands in the Thomas Cook portfolio. Thonas Cook (who was teetotal) would turn in his grave if he knew what went on with the Club 18-30 holidays/shagfests).

SkyCruiser – you’ll soon be looking down your nose at me in a 757 when you’re A340-600 rated!

Luke – while all aircraft leave the factory nice and straight they develop bends with time (and hard landings, etc). As a result you often have to ‘trim’ out aerodynamic perculiarites. It is also very common to find that each engine performs differently depending on its age. The other big difference can be the level of spec the aircraft has. E.g. navigation can be a minor pain over long stretches of water when the aircraft does not have GPS or it can be a pain when some aircraft don’t have a TCAS overlay on the map screen, etc.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-11-02 AT 11:18 PM (GMT)]Hellaid – when the Trislander was built there weren’t any really suitable big piston engines available to make it a twin so they gave it three smaller ones instead. Don’t forget that the three engine Trislander has 18 seats as opposed to the twin engine Islanders 8(?).

SkyCruiser – are they actually going to try operating Twotters again? Also, is the next Shed going to be Jersey based?

    RE: Iberia A340

For entry into many aircraft Kabir is right. Just shin up the nosewheel into the avionics bay and from there it’s a hatch into the main cabin.
Funnily enough when you buy an airliner from Mr Boeing you get a key (on a fob) but you won’t find anywhere on the aircraft to insert it! There is no door lock. From outside (depending on type) you pull the lever out and rptate it to open the door. If the slide was armed, opening the door from outside automatically disarms it.

It’s interesting that you raise this point. With the increase in security costs a lot of airlines (including mine) have twigged that they can more than make up the difference by hotting up on excess baggage. There hasn’t been any changes to the rules, just more intent on imposing them and the figures we are drawing in are immense.

Yes, Russian airframes have generally been pretty good but let down by poor engine design. That’s why I was so impressed when you told me you can get a Tu204 with RB211’s.

The aircraft rotate around all the bases returning to Manch and Gatters for essential maintenance so, yes I have flown this one (and all of them) many times. You would be amazed at how different they can be to one another. This one is one of my favourites while the next one in sequence (G-FCLG) is my next but one least favourite.

I love watching them but they are a nightmare to operate around. Before take off they have to run at 50% thrust for 2 minutes and then at take off thrust for 2 minutes before brake release. This has to be done on the runway (to avoid blowing things away and in case of brake failure) so it occupies the runway for 4 minutes + the time taken to taxi onto the runway + the time to take off. It is a controllers nightmare. Looks like the mutts nuts though!
