I heard this second hand so I will let someone back this up before comitting it as gospel!!.
Was once speaking to a chap and he informed me that the easy way to tell if a vulcan had been modded for blue steel was the addition of an extra ariel cowling beneath the port engine nacelles.
It was to duplicate the ariels from the starboard side, countering the blanking effects of the blue steel missile on the radio waves so there was no loss of signal.

John.
Hi John,
You may be correct there as I have also heard this story… As it happens XL319 does have both of these fitted!!
Cheers,
Phil.
A daft question possibly, but by what criteria are people gauging “blue steel capable”? Surely every survivor today was “capable” of carrying blue steel, whether they DID or not is another matter….
Jon
Hi Jon,
Not every Vulcan was Blue Steel capable. Only those which had extensive underside alterations to where the bomb bay would be. The alterations allowed the nuke to be semi-recessed into the fuselage.

XM597
I think East Fortunes might have been Blue Steel capable also. Like Newark they too have one of these nuke’s on display. See photo I took only a few months back.
XL319
XL319 (North East Aircraft Museum) was a Blue Steel capable aircraft as well as having hard points on the wings for Skybolt.
Can no one save this bloody F4J(UK)?? One of only two whole examples left 🙁
Damn, got beaten to it, yet again 😀
Yeah, there is!!!
Whirlwind HAR10 XJ729 still graces the skies over the UK. Check out the link below of a photo taken in 2005.

XV415 + Air Scene UK
Looks like Air Scene will be back with us on the 16th – Woohoo!!! By the way Dazza, I don’t know where I got that pic now, It could well be yours.. The only reason I use it is that myself and a couple of friends restored her on the gate at RAF Boulmer and the fact that I’m a total nut on the British Toom!! If it is yours, please let me know and I will remove it if your not happy with me using it 🙂
Many regards,
Phil.
