Doesn’t FG.1 XT864 still survive at Leuchars?
Just to say that GA11 WT711 is the ONLY GA11 that was never fitted with a Harley Light but retained its solid nose cone throughout for some reason!!
BIG THANKS to all those folks out there showing an interest in WT711 as she is up for sale at the moment …
Unfortunately I have since received photographic proof that this fact is incorrect. WT711 did indeed get the Harley light treatment in the early 1970s.
It would appear that the solid nosecone was fitted only after it had been moved, and also recoded to 833, for ground instructional use at RNAS Culdrose.
This would certainly tie in with the School of Aircraft Handling’s other GA.11s of the time; WT804/831, XE668/832, “WW654″/834 and WV267/836.
The FRADU Hunter site should soon be updated with this info.
One hopes she finds a good home 🙂
Hi
For anyone interested, there’s still one GA-11 curently airworthy in the UK.
…and worldwide! Unless WV267/836 is flying in the USA of course, which would seem unlikely given it hasn’t been seen for several years.
Several of the GA11s were moved to Hurn for the Fleet Requirements Unit *(FRU) in 1969, whereas others were posted to the Air Direction Training Unit at Yeovilton before the two Units merged in December 1972 to become FRADU.
GA.11s XF300 and XF301 were in LTS at Kemble until the early 1980s, so they may have have their gunsights etc until then 🙂
She’s the last F.6A in Europe, and one of only two left flying worldwide!
I believe her last display was at Filton in 2004/5 – her last flight (unless Brian has flown her since) was the ferry hop to Exeter from Weald on 5th September 2007.
If I remember rightly…
G-APOI was donated to Solent Sky.
XL812 is to be donated to the AAC Museum of Flying.
XL814 will remain with the AACHF but as a travelling exhibit only.
All this was said publicly at the handover of APOI at Eastleigh earlier this month.
Please post them 🙂
I remember the sight of the ‘dead’ Sea Prince at Yeovilton very well from the 80s!
Grew up near Yeovilton in the 80s, where a certain Swordfish, Firefly, Sea Hawk and two Sea Furies were based.
…oh and Hunters too 😀
Hi Stringbag,
I agree, it was an excellent day.
Some of your pictures look just like mine, in fact, the third picture down has my son’s pram handles in it, with my camera bag hanging from them!John
Had a look at the original and it is just your two nippers that were caught, are those feet underneath the chippie yours? 🙂
I’ll have a look at the original image to see if you are in it 😀
Think they mean Northern Lights Combat Air Support, whom are based in Canada but are civilian registered and contracted to carry out military taskings.
Some JP fots would be nice – it may get me going again 🙂
Oh i completely forgot about the RNHFs re build. Do they still have a long way to go with it then?
Does anyone remember at Legends a few years ago seeing 2 sea furys and a bearcat together……that was cool:D
Perhaps Legends 2009 could see a (Sea) Fury 4-ship, with ZU-WOW, VR930, G-RNHF and G-CBEL flying together, or further on than that, a 6-ship with ‘WH588’ and TFC’s machine. 😀
Don’t think there’s any Sea Furies flying in Europe currently – ZU-WOW in France is a ISS Fury I believe.
That’s what I thought (that it was at Tangmere) too.
