SAA does not have SVP-24.
So the Su-24M2 upgrade does not come with the SVP-24 as a standard fiy??
The Russian Mi-8 that was shot down was featured many times earlier in pictures and in videos. This one was dedicated for humanitarian missions and no surprise the crew involved Russian servicemen from the reconciliation centre.
RF-95585

This same helo was the one which transported the little Syrian girl, who lost both her legs when moderate terrorist moderately bombed hospitals including a maternity hospital in Aleppo and killed scores of people. The moderate attack on hospitals was probably never reported in the western media.
But what resulted in the helo being shot down? Altitude, navigation error, engine problem?
^^ The moderate terrorists offensive have taken high causality, but its a not a problem for these highly motivated goatfu$kers drooling on the thought of 72 virgins. The South Aleppo offensive with more than 5,000 (some say 10,000) strong force from all sections of moderate terrorists will be a heavy task for both Syrian & Russian military considering the limited asset at their disposal.
SAA is short on manpower and they need to bring in men from other parts to defend. In addition the ISIS and moderate terrorists have been complimenting each other in opening frontlines against Syrian army.
Best assets for Aleppo offensive is close air support from gunships like we saw during Palmyra liberation. But SyAAF in all had just 13 x Mi-24/35s in their inventory and they lost some of it when the bases were overrun and some were shot down. So there is probably only 6 or so operational Mi-24/35 in the Syrian inventory to fight this war, which is way too inadequate to properly support even a single front.
The Russian inventory is the single largest gunship grouping in Syria now, but even that is limited and its impossible for them to be everywhere. Only option is to increase their numbers or Syrian Govt ask Iraqi help and their helo gunships.
I believe helo gunships would be the best assets to put those moderate terrorists into meat grinder.
Some figures form the Russian sources on this…..
http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160801/1043836725/russia-syria-aerospace-forces.html
The Syrian armed forces with the support of Russian combat planes repelled a terrorist offensive near the city of Aleppo, killing over 800 militants and destroying 14 tanks, Rudskoy added.
“Together with the Syrian army troops and the national militia, with the support of Russian aviation, a militant attack was repelled at 4 a.m. today. More than 800 militants were killed, and 14 tanks, 10 infantry fighting vehicles, and more than 60 vehicles with mounted weapons destroyed,” Chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Sergei Rudskoy.
Bad news. RIP. 🙁
Reports say a Helicopter was shot down in Syria. Earlier it was said it was a Mi-24, but now its said a Mi-8 was down with a crew of 5 who was returning to Latakia after a humanitarian mission in Aleppo.
This crew has bullet marks all over his body. Terrorits killed him and other crews after the helo crashed. They probably dragged the injured crew out and shot them..

Russian Mi-8 helicopter shot down in Syria, fate of 5 on board unknown
Published time: 1 Aug, 2016 09:52
Edited time: 1 Aug, 2016 10:04A Russian Mi-8 helicopter has been shot down by ground fire in Syria following delivery of humanitarian supplies to Aleppo, the Defense Ministry said in a statement. The three crew and two officers from Russia’s reconciliation center were returning to base.
The condition of those on board has yet to be established, the ministry said.
“On August 1, an Mi-8 transport helicopter has been shot down by ground fire in Idlib province after a delivery of humanitarian aid to the city of Aleppo. Three crew members and two officers from the Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria were on board,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The helicopter was returning to the Russian air base at Khmeimim, the statement added.
The terrorists have launched their biggest offensive in South Aleppo after the motivational speech of Saudi commander of the Jaish al Fateh alliance in Syria and the reward of 72 virgins in heaven. Video below. Expects 10s if not 100s of suicide bombers in this assault.

Terrorists have also been burning tyres to mask their movements from the Russian and Syrian airforces, probably after 3 convoys of Jihadi’s were reportedly destroyed by VKS/SyAAF on their way to South Aleppo.
But how much does this kind of smoke screen obstruct the aircraft from indentifying its targets??
Also, what is the best option for VKS in such an area to stop these maniacs, cluster bombing or shower OFABs from Tu-22M3 and Tu-160?
^^ Bad news indeed. This is from the accident that happened a month and more ago, right?
^^ Its really hard to look at Mi-28 now, the nose has completely taken out that brute looks. 🙁
And some photos from Aviastar, also courtesy of UAC website:
For a moment I mistook it to be an IL-112V. An-124 fuselage looks smaller in this view.
Should purchase price be the only criterion? How much of the lifetime cost is purchase price? How does performance compare?
Yes, for a 3rd world country like India it should be the case. More so when the product comes from a high cost supply chain/line and Indian currency having very low purchasing power with One Indian Rupee fetching 0.015 US Dollar or 0.013 Euros.
The so called life-time ownership cost has been blown out of proportion by those vested interest who have something to gain from such promos. Even little common sense (which lacks very much in Indian establishments) will tell any common person that a Merc will never beat a VW in life-time ownership cost in the same segment, no matter how much better a Merc is over the VW.
Two contracts that was hyped up in the media with an army of faithfuls to promote the same are…
C-130J contract (6 nos)
$1,200 million ($200 million/unit)
$120 million support contract for 5 yearsIn addition to the above what else?
– Atleast 8 more such support contracts if we are expecting the C-130J to be in service for 40 years.
– A mid-life upgradeIn addition to all these the operating cost of fuel.
C-17 contract (10 nos)
$4,700 million ($470 million/unit)
$469 million support contractWhat else?
– atleast 4-8 more such contracts over its service life.
– a mid-life upgradeAnd the unavoidable operating cost of fuel (Rs.43.19 lakh/hour, which is only going to increase).
For an aircraft that was bought at lightening speed for that “critical” airlift capablity which was “severely” lacking in India…
CAG data for C-17, upto Dec 2015, tells us –
Total sorties – 4,275, upto Dec 2015
Total hours – 5,682
Fuel/operating cost – Rs.2,454 crore @ Rs.43.19 crore/hrTotal payload carried – 15,321 tons
Average payload/sortie = 3.58 tons/sortie
Austin, that garbage from terror sponsors was not necessary for this Russia in Syria thread.
The only stuff to be noted is the one below… again we all came to understand it earlier itself who all were the supporters and the agenda of dividing Syria into parts came in open with those SF and bases inside Syria and various statements from the murican guys early itself, if their regime change plan flopped..
“I see Putin playing checkers here when this really is a five-dimensional chess game, and you really need to be very careful and deliberative in how you move your pieces,” Brennan opined.
The five-dimensional chess being Russia has to play 5 players at a time – Israel, CIA, State Department, Saudi & Qatar. who are the driving force.
Spare the US President (& other good chaps in US), he is a good guy but he can only do what he is told/advised to do. The only continuity in the US is the CIA and SD, others come and go.
The 6th dimension, Turkey, just fell out and is probably not going to make much of a difference for the grand plan and the reason why it got winded down to a 5 dimensional stuff.
If we look back, Turkey was a reluctant entry into this scheme as they had to break off the rather good relations they built with Iran (& Syria) over the years to join it, but once they joined it they blended in very well. An encounter with Su-24 changed it all…. this is one hell of an a/c. 😀
For that aviation touch 🙂
Not related to aviation, but still related to flying stuff…
T-90/A’s operated by the SAA has done exceptionally well so far in facing off all those anti-tank missiles on the battlefield. Below is another video of the T-90 vs the anti-tank missiles. The FSA terrorists fires the first TOW which fails to do the job so they hurry for another shot, but the result looks the same…
10,000-Crore Mistake? Auditor Fails Navy’s Main Fighter Jet, MiG-29
National auditor CAG says navy’s fighter jet riddled with problems
MiG-29K has engine and other problems, hardly available for service
45 of these jets bought from Russia for 10,500 crores
Disappointing article coz its the same as what other articles have been saying which is basically copy paste from CAG report. I would have expected Vishnu Som to get more detailed info on the problems mentioned in the CAG report.
The CAG report even though criticized the MiG-29K simulator for sub optimal utilization it doesn’t mention how many hours its been used or no details. Btw, the full-mission flight simulator was from Rheinmetall Defence Electronics, Germany, and was delivered in 2008.
This FOC upgrade on Mirage 2000 gives additional capability of air to ground weapon, training, helmet mounted display etc. The system having a unique feature of integrating different types of data bus for IOC and FOC configuration is achieved without any degradation. The total design and development was done by HAL which includes mission computer hardware, OFP software, system design, aircraft modification etc. The Company is responsible for the IOC and FOC upgrade of the Mirage fleet of IAF.

What is that additional capability mentioned for A-G weapons? Better resolution? Integrated pod?
Does anyone know how much longer the Il-38SD MPA fleet will last in the IN? the IN will probably look for more P-8Is to replace these whenever their useful service lives are over.
It will only stay as long as political & business bosses want it to stay. The earlier it retires, the higher the chance Boeing gets more multi-billion dollar contracts.
More teeth for IN’s Il-38 fleet
^ This is probably the first instance of the new sonobouys being acquired for the IL-38s. Even after the upgrade to the SD standard they were probably using the old stocks.
TR1, Austin, do you remember the sonobouy numbers?
If I’m not wrong, the sonobouys carried by different MPAs was like this…..
P-3C – 72 nos
P-8 – 72 nos
IL-38SD – 96 nos
IL-38N – 128 nos
Kasatonov: headache nuclear destroyer “Leader” lay not before 2019
http://ria.ru/defense_safety/20160728/1473030029.html
Earlier, the ship laying planned for 2018.
“As time favorites, but now we focus on in 2019 is expected that the ship will be built.” Severnaya Verf ” in St. Petersburg”, – said Kasatonov.
He stressed that the preliminary design of the ship has been prepared, it was decided that the ship will be equipped with a nuclear power plant. “We have solved the issue of the choice of reactor: nuclear reactor boat has its own specifics, but also a kind of icebreaker experience we have accumulated a large, face it.”, – Said the admiral.
Another disaster in the making…..following the footsteps of 20380 and 22350, the only two new generation combat ship projects for Russian navy.
There are other bigger yards in St Petersberg with facility already available and laying vaccant (if not, soon) like the Admirality and Baltisky and all they selected was a punny Severnya whose private gangs have made a mess of the two projects. These fellows earlier grabbed Baltisky yard after their successful completion of 3 x 11356 for Indian navy with the hope that more lucrative contracts will follow, which never happened. In the years of their “administration” of Baltisky, the yard was stripped, crippled and the bankrupted yard finally returned to the Russian Govt control. Even though Servernya is now a part of USC, IMHO, its it the most useless “asset” in the USC. A bottomless pit where Russian navy funds go waste without desired output.
New combat ships for Russian navy to arrive in time and in budget looks hopeless by the day.
Looks like we have to wait 7 more years 2023 till IAC gets commisioned , No news of INS Arihant commissioning too ?
Seems like the project is being sabotaged by the super-carrier supporters? Has there been any info regarding breakage in funding for the construction?
India paid good amount to the Italians to convert/modify the Cavour to what it is now and its foolish to stop the project with just one ship. Even if they want a bigger carrier the project should not be stopped, instead it can be built as a helicopter carrier (without that ski jump and overhangs).
BTW can Naval Tejas fly off Virkramaditya ?
Yes it can. It has already demonstrated the same from from the STB facility.
On the VKD it will be getting another 18-26 knots of the carrier under its wings and extra 7-10 knots if there is light breeze. So taking off is not an issue, what loads it can carry will be the one to be checked.
^^ Full Report linked starts pg 54
Thanks for the link, there are stuffs that needs to be dug deeper, unfortunately as usual the data/info in the report are incomplete to get a complete picture and these guys never put the complete details in their reports.
Quoting and noting few things I found interesting…
Regarding the engine “failures”…
Audit observed (December 2014) that as of September 2014, a total of 65 engines (42 with 21 aircraft and 23 spare) had been accepted. However, since induction in February 2010, 40 engines (representing 62 per cent of 65 engines) had been withdrawn from service/rejected due to design related defects/deficiencies. The issue had serious flight safety implications, since in-flight engine defects had led to ten cases of single engine landings.
Audit further observed from the protocol (September 2014) of the 16th IRIGC-MTC54 that RAC MiG had forwarded a list of 17 modifications which they had scheduled to complete on all engines held in India by November 2014. However, as of September 2015, it was seen that four modifications (out of 17) had been implemented by RAC MiG on all engines and balance 13 modifications would be implemented as and when engines were sent to OEM at Russia for overhaul/repair.
In response to audit query about status of repairs on engines withdrawn, the Indian Navy replied (November 2015) that repairs of defective engines were being taken up with RAC MiG based on warranty/non-warranty basis, adding that repair of non-warranty engines were being progressed under IHQ MoD (N) indents.
So what were those 17 modifications recommend by the OEM? No details provided and no one seems interested.
But considering that they have postponed 13 of the 17 modifications to be implemented to the first overhaul tells us
– engines were back on duty after the implementation of those 4 modification/solutions.
– the “problems” are not hindering the flight/engine operation
– those engines are being operated as we speak, logging flight hours for their first overhaul
We had earlier seen some engine issues with the Su-30MKI which was related to engine oil and stuffs like that in the Indian climate. Since the CAG report is incomplete on data we don’t know for sure what its for the RD-33MK.
“Failure of airframe parts during deck operations” – Still, the report, not once, specify which part was it or anything regarding what was the failure and where it was.
This report, which are basically meant for civilian babus, is good enough only for those civilian mofos eagerly awaiting to bark on aircrafts that doesn’t come from their preferred suppliers and who is not eager to know any further. For those really interested in understanding what the problem really is, there is nothing much other than an outline.
“Delay in build-up of aircraft” – This is the part that we saw the Janes pulled out to give that earlier report of how the a/c was suffering/suffered due to components supplied from outside of Russia; breakdown of relations with Ukraine and sanctions on Russia. But we still do not for certain know what (all) parts/components are still coming from outside of Russia which have played a part in this aircraft build-up.
The guys are not short of sense of humour… They think aircrafts are McDonalds burger with an expiry date/time.
As per Clause 16 of the Option Clause contract (March 2010), post delivery of aircraft, the Russian Warranty Team (RWT) has to assemble/build up the aircraft and offer to the Navy for technical acceptance.
Audit scrutiny revealed:
The service life of the aircraft is 6000 hrs or 25 calendar years whichever is earlier, as seen from the Option clause contract (March 2010).Out of 19 aircraft delivered up to November 2015, 12 had been built up, with time taken for build up ranging from two months to fifteen months.
The contract did not stipulate any timeframe for completion of build up/assembly. Therefore, the delays in build up would reduce the service life, thereby impacting the operational life of the aircraft.
The MiG-29K/KUB availability. KUBs utilisation is hardly surprising coz these were not aircrafts which were augmenting an operational squadron but rather a new squadron was being formed with new pilots and conversion.
I have translated the earlier data into availability per month and year. If any smartarse finds the chart to be incomplete, it’s coz the CAG report/data is incomplete!
The CAG report even though criticized the MiG-29K simulator for sub optimal utilization it doesn’t mention how many hours its been used or no details. Btw, the full-mission flight simulator was from Rheinmetall Defence Electronics, Germany, and was delivered in 2008.
Sub-optimal utilisation of Full Mission Simulator
The Full Mission Simulator (FMS) costing 183.16 crore, is a major training aid of the MiG29K and is designed for the ground training of a pilot. The MiG29K Simulator facility had been commissioned at INS Hansa, Goa in May 2013. The MiG29K training squadron has been earmarked at Goa, the squadron however had not been fully operationalised as of
September 2015.Audit scrutiny (August 2014) of records showed that:
The simulator remained unserviceable (July 2014) due to defects in three out of nine visual channels and was being used for training for basic flying profile akin to a procedure trainer. As per the protocol of the 16th Indo-Russian Inter Governmental Commission – Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGSC-MTC) (September 2014), un-serviceability of the simulator had prevented its optimum utilization for training of IN pilots.
In reply to an audit query, Directorate of Aviation Projects Management (DAPM) admitted (December 2014) that the simulator was assessed to be unsuitable for Carrier Qualification (CQ) simulator training for pilots, as the visuals did not support the profile which required high accuracy and fidelity. As of 31st July 2015, the OEM was still in the process of
software
