    HI

My vote is for the handles that secure the astro dome in place – or the alternative blank hatch. With no second handle this item must be used somewhere where only one side of the ‘door’ is expected to be used – so not an internal door. However, there were keys under small flaps next to some of the hatches so that rescuers could open the hatch from the outside following a crash. That used a square key I think and there is what looks like the receptacle for such a key on the side opposite the handle. There is also a tell-tale curve to the metal work, the handles were near a curved corner.

So a question – is there a link between what looks like the square key receptacle and the handle? If I am right there would have to be.

I think that I have modeled this outer lock on my 3D Stirling – of course this would have been from photos and I may not have had any idea what they were at the time as they would just look like ‘blobs’! It would be good to know.

    Cheers

And from the gunners point of view – sorry about the countryside – another work in progress!

    Hi All

Well here is that FN25 dustbin descending from the Stirling as I sort of promised 5 years ago. It hasn’t taken 5 years to do but Iife gets in the way! The guys at Hendon were great and I did get to measure up the Leigh Light.

    Hi FIDD88

Indeed I have missed it, but you have a reply now!

    Hi Fid88

That’s right, he used my 3D model to print the parts. While the software I use is mainly for graphics, all of the animation maths is done by the software such that any size model should operate correctly. I do have  some models on here under jamesinnewcastl, sadly my old name victim of the ‘new’ improved web site!

    Hi

Here’s a slightly smaller RC turret!

    Hi

There seems to be a lot of information on the internet about the undercarriage, for example:

    https://www.historicflyingclothing.com/en-GB/ww2-raf-documents/handley-…

    https://tailendcharlietedchurch.wordpress.com/halifax-bomber/landing-ge…

From a quick perusal it seems to me that the two angled struts are held locked by the ram putting tension in the ‘wires’ – bit like the way that we can lock our knees. If you stood and locked your knees and then secured a string from your foot to your thigh you would not be able to bend your leg. Try it! 🙂

Releasing the ram that is holding the wires in tension would allow the two struts to move and the other rams pull up the undercarriage.

Slightly dodgy arrangement though – losing the pressure in the rams on the ground would make the arrangement buckle easily if you moved the aircraft!

Not a brilliant explanation or necessarily correct, but I suspect it’s close!

    Hi John

I’ve finally finished-ish moving house and have just caught up with this thread and interestingly I read:

“the profiles shown in the Electrical installation GA was the most accurate data for frame spacing and profiles”, can you let me know which document that is please? Is it in one of the APs? If so which one and what page?

Which documents are the ‘Type Records’? What did they have in them that you were checking on?

On another note, I’ve finally set up my workshop to allow me to program small micro controller boards, these will allow some electrical animation of controls. For example, the undercarriage raise/lower switches could be wired such that there was an appropriate delay before the relevant lights came on – or went off, with perhaps a slight delay between each light to represent the slighly different retraction speeds. More complex simulations could operate the SBA system such that you could ‘fly’ around/land on a runway with sounds and indicators operating correctly. The joy of these small boards is that each system could be contained in a small plastic box with a battery and an on/off switch removing the need for anything complex, fussy or temperamental. I suggested this to you many years ago now and you were very much in the early stages of your build, I don’t suppose you are into anything electrical even now, but it may be worth keeping in the back of your mind. Meantime, I will attempt to make a demonstrator to show the concept.

    Hi – Getting there!!

Is it just me, but when I scroll to the bottom of the page it ‘jams’! As I scroll while jammed the screen judders up and down but does not move until I’ve ‘shaken’ it for a while – very odd, never had that on any other web site.

If I come onto the web site not logged in and then ‘log in to comment’ can you not returm me to the very same place that I was at when I said ‘OK, I will log in?’. It’s a bit like ‘Being John Malkovitch’ in that I just get dumped somewhere elese and have to scrabble back to where I was.

Love the ability to seperate paragraphs now – just like the old format.

If I ever go to Hendon I would go for research mainly – everything is much more interesting if you have a specific interest I find.

Last time I sat in a MK10 spitfire – yummy – thank you.

What I didn’t see, but I hope they still have, is the amusement upstairs where you can ‘fire’ a machine gun at a film of an enemy aircraft for 20p.

    Also got into the Sunderland.

You can tell I’m easily pleased!

Can you also reduce the size of the title fonts as well please – WHY do they need to scream at you? This forum isn’t selling anything to the ‘masses’. Even in text speak capitals have always been considered as rude.

Also don’t out the original post at the start of each page – if it was a long post then you have doomed us to scroll for a day or two!

I’ve put line feeds between paragraphs – where do they go? It makes my post look packed and written by a 12 year old!

I could not log in with my old name – the site promised to send me an email to validate my account but didn’t.

So I have had to make a new account – but on the bright side I now have an ‘e’ in Newcastle! On the downside it is now split into “new castle”

Hate the layout – we have wide screens – why make me scroll constantly???

As always improvements by software engineers means – make it worse…
