Sad to hear of Mike’s passing after such a long fight with his health.
He was a true pioneer in the aviation archaeology world, and one of the ‘characters ‘ who enthused me with his early museum collection before Hawkinge.
His outspoken single mindedness concerning other collectors and vendors of B of B relics, caused rifts and disagreements, but no one could take away the result of his life’s work at Hawkinge.
Therein lies the largest, most comprehensive collection of B of B artefacts in the world, and as such will hopefully remain as a memorial to that era of 1940 and Mike Llewellyn MBE.
Is it possible that that’s where the phrase ‘Boom & Bust’ came from
Very like Henstridge, RNAS..
Whirlwind??…don’t see it….Probable Seafire/Spitfire…Corsair…two Barra’s…Wildcat/Martlet….and a thick flat wing single engine a/c at the back, which must be a Hurricane…but the U/c doesn’t seem….????? Anyone with ideas ?

Wise man Andy !!! Suspected minefield ahead ……………….
Nice thought….do you have access to £850,000.00….??
The ultimate departure…how well it was done.
Very sad to hear of the passing of Ken Wallis…but what a good life he had.
By invitation, I landed in his ‘back garden, lawn, golf course ‘ on one summer’s day in the late ’80’s .
I had circled the American cemetery at Cambridge from where I was to see his house and landing strip. It took a few minutes to evaluate the approach, and I waited whilst a figure (Ken), scampered round moving the flags from his golf course, and in doing so, turned it into a seemingly very short landing strip. He had told me on the ‘phone, it was 600 yds, with no fences ….a bit tight, but just enough, but not both ways!! A big hedge at one end and a large field at the other. I did a longish approach over the field in the Sky Rocket, dumped on full flap, held the nose up over the single strand barb wire fence, and dropped onto the grass ‘runway’, which looked exceedingly short at 70 knots. Parked up on his lawn area in front of the large French doors and after an enthralling tour of Ken’s prototype autogyro’s plus the rest of the collection, we had tea in the garden under the wing of the Cessna…unreal to this day, but a wonderful experience and memory of such a talented, brave and charming aviator……..RIP Ken.
Bet there is a few of them on this
Great shame that such icons of a war that cost millions of lives all over the world should end up on a commercial selling site, for a greedy profit.
I’ll bet the pilots who signed that with panash and style would never have dreamt that …..well you know the rest.
Oh, okay. I was under the impression they already knew. I guess that’s just speculation then?
You ‘guessed’ right H98. The story was always speculation so as to gain public, press and TV headlines. Something like that happened in Burma recently…..I think.
The RAFM Do 17 story just does not add up either in the way it is supposed to have ‘crash landed’ on the Goodwin sands, or from the muddled crew survivors story.
If their was any real solid identity on the airframe, we should have surely been shown it by now.
Try giving a false identity to the MOD recovery Dept and/or the CWGA, when you want to dig and recover anything !!
It’s a G10, so the clear vision hood is right. Note also the enlarged fin and straight rudder hinge and the longer tail wheel strut
I think commonly called the ‘Galland hood’, named after ‘Dolpho Galland’ , who designed it.
Yes same one – stored over in the SWAAPS shed on the other side of the road.
No David, the fuselage frame of a Hurricane stored in one of the many sheds occupied by the now defunct SAWWAPS museum at Lasham, went to Ross McNiell for his rebuild project.
Other than that there would have to have been two fusalages at Lasham. (very unlikely)
[QUOTE=Dave Homewood;2055026]Thanks Martin, that’s the one. Why the heck could I not get that? It’s a piece of carp (or something spelled very similarly).[/QUOTE
