What was the mission intended for SH-2s ? ASuW right ?
About the Lynx, I think that depends a lot on the versions you’r analysing. While the RN one only have ASW as a secondary capability, most other users, like France, Germany, Netherlans, Portugal, etc etc have ASW as its core mission like you can see from their sensor suit, which includes a dipping sonar or previously a MAD.
So I think that the designation of the Lynx as a “torpedo helicopter carrier” as more to do with the way it’s been used in the RN than with reality.
Portuguese Tigers
Does ASROC and other similar systems count ? 🙂
Maceda AM1 in Portugal was since the beginning ( 70s/80s I think, but I’m not sure) earnmarked as a “NATO airfield”, and it never had any operational FAP sqdns based there, altough recently there are rumours of the basing the Orions there.
Are these Std missiles be fired in Sea Skimming mode or they are fired in ballistic parabolic curve?
Both SM-1 and SeaSparrow are launched in a ballistic curve, at least going from this footage of a very recent NATO exercise, where several frigates sunk a former PN patrol ship with them.

Also IIRC the Standard missiles can be used in an ASuW mode.

also the topic at acig forum (section past conflicts) “Portuguese COIN Wars in Africa (1961-1974)” is also of interest, especially that it has been revived in the past few months with new contributions.
The engagements with MiGs in Guinea seem to be nothing but myths, I’ve never seen any credible portuguese information on that. Later in the colonial wars, Portugal considered buying some Mirage III and Rolands for air defence there, but with the Revolution of April 74 these plans came to nothing.
The last Ginas were taken out of service in 93, sometime before the F-16s entered service.
ho says there won’t be this super genius dude who comes up with some brand new, revolutionary set of laws of physics, theories………!
Because science 99% of the time doesn’t evolve like that. People in general are still obsessed with the idea of the mad Einstein-like genious being the driving force behind scientific development, when in reality things are not that way.
BTW, people can have fun reading the attached pdf. Only speculation, of course 😀
Several other people with also apparently good ties in the FAB have too been saying this for sometime now. Let’s see what it leads to…
If it is possible, in the very far future, it will be by exotic means of which the physics of today is unable to explain, yet alone device pratical applications ( think in the famous wormholes, though those theories are now being abandomned, and you get the idea). So it’s all down to pure speculation and scifi ( and I just love some of the arguments used in this thread, one can see some people do really know what their talkin about 😉 ).

although people have reached the conclusion that it would create some “unphysical” situations, ergo it had to be rubbished…
