    This photo of a Canberra was taken during the Portuguese Colonial War in Mozambique (64-74) at the then AB5 Nampula.

    Can anyone identify it as south african or rhodesian ?

    the most recent BS player free versions also come with adware. VLC ( http://www.videolan.org/ ) is much better, you can also take snapshots with it, and you don’t need to install any codecs, it already comes with them.

    Ja, the P-3Ps will be retired, some of them are already not flying. They are pretty beaten up machines, having previously served with your RAAF as P-3Bs till the mid 80s.

    I know, I meant to say recent sources, sorry. That article is one year old and things seem to have changed.

    Also, that design is clearly referred in the text as a “preliminary study”.

    What strikes me as very odd in the navyleague news is the full-size deck. That’s the first time I see a mention of it regardind the NPL.

    In related news :

    Portugal Moves Forward With LPD Program

    The Portuguese Ministry of Defense has signed a contract with ENVC shipyard for the construction of one Schelde Enforcer-class landing platform, dock (LPD). The project, worth $277.9 million, calls for the new ship to be in service by 2010 and includes an estimated six landing craft, utility (LCU) as part of the contract.

    The contract, as well as the design for the Enforcer class, is part of the offset agreement from the April 2004 submarine contract in which the Portuguese Navy (PN) signed a construction contract with the German Submarine Consortium for two Type-U209PN submarines, with an option for a third. The contract included provisions for an LPD design to meet the PN’s specifications.

    Preliminary information states that the LPD will be the Enforcer 1300 design, but with a full-size deck. Specifications of the Enforcer 1300 include:

    Length: 544.6 feet;
    Beam: 82 feet;
    Displacement: 12,750 tons (full load);
    Military lift: 555 combat troops, 400 headquarters personnel and 30 main battle tanks or 90 armored personnel carriers;
    Two Thales Naval Nederland Goalkeeper Close-in Weapon Systems;
    Thales Naval Nederland DA08 air/surface search radar.

    (don’t know how accurate this is, haven’t seen anything in portuguese sources)

    Ja, before the P-3C acquisiton the FAP had a program called LECIP, which had a budget of 309 million €. This program consisted in the life extension and avionics upgrade of the P-3P, so there’s clearly a will by the FAP to have upgraded P-3s.

    The latest news indicate that the upgrade of the non-CUP ones might start in 2008 in OGMA, but no details are known yet (the FITS system has been rumoured). Still, the military programming law (i.e. the budget) will be revised this month, so perhaps we might know a it more then.

    Another point to consider is that they won’t be needed for a “coast guard mission”, as there will be already 5 new C-295 MPAs for that mission…

    The P-3s will continue to be operated by the “Esquadra 601 – Lobos” (Wolves). From now they have operated from BA6 – Montijo, but with the future arrival of C-295 fleet there they might be changed to AM1 – Ovar. The only other place where they might be deployed is to Lajes, Azores.
    Their missions will stay the same, primary maritime patrolling/ASW/ASuW and secondary search&rescue and minelaying in the extensive area between Portugal, Azores and Madeira and beyond (Portugal’s responsability zone in the Atlantic stretches to its middle and almost to Cabo Verde islands, so it’s a huge area) . Training/live fire exercises have included deployments to RAF Kinloss in Scotland.

    Well, there seems to be a great deal of confusion about the NPL project. Last Autumn there were a lot of rumours about it being delayed or even outright cancelled, which was incidentally the time when this project MRD was supposedely offered to the ENVC and the PN.

    Since then I believe there were no news on this matter.

    That’ll teach ’em to keep their deals simple. Having shipyard A build a design offered by shipyard B which has licenced it from shipyard C just seems to be asking for a contractual muddle.

    Yes, I agree, but we also have to keep in mind that the contract was signed with HDW as a counterpart in the long-running and polemic submarines deal, in order to provide work to the ENVC to build the LPD. The problem was that the PN wanted a Schelde design, and obviously everybody foresaw that there would be problems with this arrangement.

    It’s incredible how MBDA is still offering the Milan against the likes of Javelin and Spike. Seems a good decision on the spanish side, wish our army did the same soon ( the Marines are buiyng a couple of Spikes for their Pandurs, so ti’s a start).
