Seriously, there’s nothing to suggest that Scousers are any more prone to robberies than anyone else, it’s all just lazy shorthand. I am not a Scouser, amateur or professional. But I spent my formative adult years there (18 – 30), right in the ‘thick of it’ (Edge Lane/Kensington for those like Moggy who actually know the City rather than the stereotype).

I learned a lot there about honesty and responsibility when the chips are down (as they were) and who possessed those traits, and who didn’t. I do get a bit disgruntled by the unthinking ‘all scousers are criminals’ nonsense, whether intended to raise a laugh, or not – not having a go, it’s easy to do, and I am guilty of stereotyping others as well.

Re. Macca not being there.. I understand (admittedly from gossip) that in fact Macca was not exactly the lady’s biggest fan, for a lot of the reasons that other people who have met her have mentioned. And yes, that ‘Accent’.. what on earth was that? You’d think, being musical, that she’d have an ‘ear’ – especially for the accent she grew up with!

It is sad that others feel sad, but.. there was a strand of entertainers who worked out, in simpler times, that sincerity was everything. If you could fake that, you had it made.

Not at all – welcome to old farts corner. By crossing over you raise an interesting ‘what if’ question – what WWII airframe would one choose to adapt for a CAS / COIN role? By which I mean assume beefed-up armour, modern avionics and hardpoints to carry ‘modern’ ordnance.

Something that had decent short field performance, a large speed range, a heavy carrying capacity, good visibility of the ground and a stable gun platform. Actually, I am struggling to think, apart from the Skyraider which evalu8ter mentioned.. though only marginally ‘WWII’

..as for the mating habits of British women.. well, even I did pretty well in the nightclubs of Liverpool for a while back there (despite not having a perm or a moustache), so maybe there’s some truth in it.

OK, having broken my vow in another (less serious) thread..

Perhaps if people stopped spouting the complete lie that immigrants (or anyone, for that matter) have money thrown at them by the DSS, then those that ARE planning economic migration to the UK would think twice (especially from France, where in fact they receive more state aid than the UK would ever give). At the moment, the word coming from the UK press (and this forum) is that all they have to do is find their way to a Jobcentre and they are made instantly and for life. This is completely untrue – and it is this that needs to be painted on the white cliffs.

As for movement to the left – I think it’s more of a correction towards a balanced debate, where questions are being asked and the answers given by those like Jeremy Corbyn that think beyond capital (and Capita) are listened to (whether considered right or wrong). Nothing wrong with that!

Absolutely agree John, too many assumptions – and hard to avoid hindsight in decision making, as well.. but:

I would learn the lesson of history and not invade Russia at all. Cosy up to her. Maintain the pact, keep Stalin onside. Ultimately the Stalinist system was doomed to failure – and instead of a populace engaged in a unifying ‘Great Patriotic War’ (nothing like a war to increase popularity if you’re a bit dictatorially inclined), you get a frustrated population (including the millions of young people who in ‘real’ history were killed in the war) across an enormous and disparate country, and leaders who are quite used to the idea of revolution.. So just be patient and let Soviet Russia fall apart while maintaining my own (Germany’s) superior economic and industrial organisation, then go in and pick up the pieces (and the oil fields, and minerals, and Pacific bases, etc etc.).

Invading Poland? Well, I reckon if he had stopped there the declaration of war by Britain would not amount to much more. The phoney war would stay phoney – recalling the old hippy question ‘What would happen if war was declared but nobody showed up’?

So slowly the economic wealth, and therefore global power, of Germany increases. Maybe another soft invasion of another European country in a couple of years time. Exactly the way the Soviets did post war, in fact – but with a functioning socio-economic system able to make the most of new resources in each case. Once the USSR had faded and fallen under German control (after all, the countries would be ‘partners’, so why shouldn’t there be German ownership of the resources) whether in four or forty years, then there ya go, Global Superpower status. What would the UK do? Either form a counter-alliance with the US and China (maybe even Japan) – or duck the issue by going Swiss, becoming the world’s bank and specialist engineering workshop. Whatever, I doubt very much Britain would feel the call to go to war.
