    So, post WW2 multi-engine, not a jet.

It’s a sort of Rorschach inkblot test for aviation people – what do you see in this shape?

It’s all better now, but I’ll never forget how snotty the reply was when I sent in some rare sightings from a regional airport in Colombia. I had to bribe guards and promise to keep all kinds of secrets to get them – Beech 18’s, DC-6’s, a Grumman Amphibian, all privately owned and regularly operated from Cali..

It seems the problem was I was not a regular contributor.

Staff and attitudes have changed since those days (mid 1990’s). Just wanted to vent, after all these years!! Feel better now.

Thanks Rich – I will be picking the bones out of those later – very useful!

Also, thank you for all that food for thought, Johnny. That has already sparked off as couple of ideas for collaborators.. more to follow.

..and yes please on Whirlwind parts from Dumfries! It sounds like you might know exactly where the scrapping happened?

Yes, there are websites – I have had a look around, they appear geared to other things – for example Kickstarter is for ‘Creatives’ – film-makers, authors, sculptors. There is a long pre-qualification process to go through to get your project on these sites. Also, they collect a 5% fee. And, if we do get charitable status, then we can’t use Kickstarter – they specifically rule this out, as do other sites.

So I thought about it, and it’s really much simpler to ask for an email promise on the same principle (in fact it wasn’t my idea – thanks Jim).

Having said that, if there is an appropriate ‘building/restoring heritage items’ pledge site that was free or close to it then I’d look at it.

    I’m a frayed knot, Jon

We are looking at this. The definitions of the aims of a group that the Charities Commission require are the tricky bit. We need to use the ‘Heritage’ and ‘Educational’ aspects (listed as qualifiers for charitable status), but I for one don’t know how to phrase it. Does anyone have a copy of the wording of a successful bid to the commission for a similar project?

Re. Bullet strikes, is there necessarily a correlation or does it depend on how the guns were aligned, and the relative motion of the target through the field of fire?

Now if he had said the aircraft was made from wood and it’s surfaces were then covered in canvas, then that would be correct. .

Really? Cotton, even linen.. but actual canvas?

Enjoyed it too, especially some of the (new to me) footage, and the presenter’s genuine enjoyment of his trip. I would say that most people probably don’t know that Merlins splutter when inverted.. but also I think this suggestion of pilot error was a little misleading as the AAIB noted a problem with the carburettor float stops that reduced fuel flow – quote ‘ The investigation of the carburettors revealed that neither unit met the specified fuel flow requirements under negative g conditions’.

While the report stops short of attributing this as definite cause, it should have been mentioned by the programme as a differentiating factor, as the AAIB, under recommendation 97-23 in the RR299 report, asks that Rolls Royce communicate to all known Merlin operators (and I can only presume this includes US ones) the importance of checking the settings on these carburettors.

    Report here: http://www.aaib.gov.uk/cms_resources.cfm?file=/dft_avsafety_pdf_501355.pdf

Don’t know, I am at work. Hmm.. That’s worse, isn’t it?

But to get a bit more on-topic – what would we do now, in the same situation? European state goes rogue, overthrows and occupies most of Europe, then offers the UK terms?
