FF, yes(ish) – No Place For Chivalry P96 quotes that in general up to Nov/40 aircraft used in night ops wore the standard day scheme, with ‘special night’ black paint being applied to the undersides of some first from Sep/40, then overall from mid-Nov/40. There’s nothing in the 540 for Jul/40 or Aug/40 mentioning changes of scheme. TNA’s playing up atm so I can’t check Sep/40’s summary, but the ref is AIR 27/341/19 if you want to check whether it’s playing nicely later. The book’s here if you want to drop round and borrow it.

Ross, thanks for the offer – we’ve been working from microfilms of the RAFM WW2 F1180s for the project, and a few of these 3-digit numbers were recorded on there. I’ve just managed to solve the mystery though (after a few hours of head-scratching and coffee-drinking) – these 3-digit numbers are the RCAF serials for Hurricanes that were shipped to Canada in 1939 and returned to the RAF when 1(F) sqn RCAF re-equipped over here in 1940 prior to becoming 401sqn.
I managed to solve the mystery thanks to a post by Bill Walker whilst I was looking to see if I could get a match on a Hurricane that S/Ldr Niedzwiecki was killed in on 18/Aug/40.
Here’s the link to Bill’s site: http://www.rwrwalker.ca/RCAF_301_350_detailed.htm

Hopefully this’ll work – found it at Kew on my last visit there whilst looking for other stuff. It gives a brief overview of performance and lists the doc ref of the full report:

Bit of a thread resurrection here, but the provenance of this report is on P424 of “Beware of the Dog at war” – 49 Sqn’s history. The person relating the anecdote was aircrew at the time and recalls the 109 flipping on to it’s back on landing. The aircrew helped lift the aircraft and released the pilot, who apparently removed a package from behind a panel (presumably his belongings) and was then handed over to the RAF Police. There is no mention of the incident in 49 or 189’s 540s for the period, lending credence to part of the report which stated that the Staish requested secrecy on the incident over the station tannoy at the time. Unfortunately whilst I was at Kew last year I didn’t delve far enough back into Fulbeck’s 540 to see if there was mention in there. The aircraft is not reported in the local Constabulary records, but I wouldn’t expect it to be as no damage was done nor any lives lost, and it happened on the airfield. I’ve also not seen anything in the reports of captured enemy aircraft at Kew either.
Any suggestions as to where else may hold corroboration or more info would be gratefully accepted!
