[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-09-02 AT 07:42 PM (GMT)]I work with the equipment from the company that, as the site quaintly puts it, “rhymes with Nabisco” (Cisco Systems!). I recognise all of this equipment and could extract much vengeance with that “power hub”.

As Frank says the act of feeding mains voltage and current through most electronic equipment will have swift, and quite unrecoverable, effect – networking gear especially so. To put it into context the signals that travel out of your PC’s network port are, at the most basic level, simply changes in voltage from -5V to 0, if memory serves, in certain sequences that represent data to the network card/device.

Suddenly having +240V shoved in would be akin to trying to take a drink from a water fountain and having the average flow from Niagra Falls come out!!!.

This, for me, confirms the fact that a bored or annoyed techie can be one of the most destructive forces on the planet. Great find Frank – the lads in the office are really going to love this one!!!

“633 Squadron” and “The Dambusters” are complete classics of the two I prefer the Dambusters for the way it portrayed Barnes Wallis and detailed some of the development work behind the story.

My favourite aviation movie has to be “By Dawn’s Early Light” though. It a tremendous film about a B-52 crew that has to SIOP launch following a game of international nuclear brinksmanship. The rather lovely presence of Rebecca DeMournay as the copilot doesnt hurt the story either! 🙂

I just happened to be off work that week and had stopped over at a friends place after a bit of a beer session the night before. I was flicking through channels when I saw the clip of the first WTC impact and stopped cold.

I clearly remember thinking, somewhat naively with hindsight, how did a terrorist get an airliner up on his own? It wasnt for a few seconds that it dawned on me that there could be a passenger load aboard.

There was still some confusion, at that point, about whether it could have been some terrible accident which didnt seem very plausible but while the news commentators were reviewing that we saw the live footage come in of the second plane steering into the second tower after which I actually shouted “sh1t, that’s an attack”. We didnt leave the tv for about 6 hours after that.

Nonsense Geforce we do, as you quite rightly say, live in civilised societies IMO it is these people who choose not to by commiting acts of the most abhorrent nature.

How can someone who has killed two 10 year old girls ever be truely rehabilitated? They’ve breached the most basic of trusts that civilisation depends on they have taken the lives of those not able to defend themselves. This is not a drunken fight between two men outside a nightclub or gangland murders in some turf war where both parties are more or less equal.

We are talking, here, of the victimisation of the most vulnerable members of our society and, as a society, we have an obligation to protect them. That, to my mind, means that people like this 28 year old must never be allowed freedom of choice or action in civilised society ever again. Whether this requires their deaths a or life-means-life jail term is an academic and financial question. Though, speaking as the father of a beautiful six year old girl, I know which I’d prefer.

You are quite lucky Benny in that you are still young enough to be able to hold on to the ideal that justice should be distinct and seperate from emotion. I think that as you get a bit older, have a family of your own etc, the reality of how utopian that belief is will become steadily more apparent to you.

In the US, more than anywhere I’ve ever been, you really do have the right to say any thing you feel irrespective of how “tactless” it may be and it is the obligation of the person or group offended to take action further to it.

I think the below section shows how this changes in relation to Govt codes of conduct:
