The designation system for US engines of that period is interesting…
…the numerical part being the displacement (in cubic inches).
Lycoming R-7755 = 127 litres…..ouch! 😀
ill agree, what a monster!!! i think it was the largest piston engine ever built, though if anyone has any other 127 litre 36 cylinder engine they would like to share with the class please say :diablo:
try the CAA…they won’t let a Shack or a Lightning fly in their own homeland.
maybe they dont want to embarrass the RAF when civillians start overtaking them in their old aircraft (by this i mean lightning 😉 ) waving and blasting “chooons” from the 15″ sub behind the pilots seat 😉
*digs a trench, dons tin potty and waits for return fire*
its ok, ill give you a smaller runner up muffin 😉

Found all of these “hyper engines” whilst searching for an engine for my dream reno racer 😀
low back spitfire….lowered cockpit and moved aft a foot or so, either a set of clipped mustang wings or a set of learjet wings and a napier sabre up front… 😉 the thought of this would, im sure turn many purists stomachs inside out, but it would be rather nice i think to win reno with an english aircraft 😉
Is mystery engine 4 a Jumo 222?
spot on 🙂
Mystery engine 5 is an Allison prototype for a contra-rotating pusher.
right again, an X24 allison engine
I think mystery engine 1 is a BMW 28-cylinder water-cooled radial prototype with contra-rotating propellers (actually I think it is two 14-cylinder engines that can be run independently).
Do you have any better photos of that one?
and right again 🙂 dont really have any better photos though 🙂 but you are right
engine 5 is – Allison V-3420 X24
engine 1 – BMW 803 radial
engine 4 – Jumo 222
Not bad 3 out of 5 but you dont get the cookie! 😉
and i guess one more for luck

engine 5 😉
okay here’s some trivia for you boys 😉

mystery engine 1

mystery engine 2

mystery engine 3

mystery engine 4
anyone who guesses all four correctly gets a cookie 😉
YES PLEASE MARTIN :D:D:D
Interesting, if slightly depressing, topic!
Re the Ta152, I think the Smithsonian have at least part of one in storage…I could be mistaken though.
Already mentioned are the Stirling, Whirlwind and Whitley; whether the Whirly is “major” (having equipped only one squadron) is debatable, but the two bombers certainly played a substantial role…
Not quite a true wartime type, but the Hornet is such a gorgeous design I’ve got to cite it anyway; and didn’t the prototype fly before war’s end?
Axis types, as has been noted, fared even worse than their Allied counterparts…
Ju188, 288, 388
Do17, 215, 217
Hs129
He70, 112
G4M “Betty”
B5N “Kate”
A5M “Claude”
Ki27 “Nate”
Ki44 Shoki “Tojo”
…and a slew of others from “the other side”. Then there are the French types, only a tiny handful of fighter types having survived, with a Bloch light bomber getting the chop as late as the seventies…
S.
could i also add He 177 and the He 217 🙂 and the TA-152 i think is complete? sitting in the same building with the BV155 and the last horten flying wing i think?
avro arrow? martin baker MB5, short sperrin, saro princess, bristol brabazon? i know experimental types etc but still extinct types
ahh! everything falls into place now 🙂
crikey, so there are a considerable amount of them left still!!! i thought the idiots in grey suits had got rid of almost all of them
*stomps foot similar to a petulant child*
I WANNA KNOW!!!
😀
XM655 guys do, do a fantastic job 🙂 i couldnt believe the chap when he said that they maintain her and run her on just less than £12k a year….
Argh that would be so cool, a whole living room suite? dining chairs?
When you wanna go upstairs just pull the cord 😀
