I always thought that It was vaguely the idea for it as it was capable of mach 1+ at sea level, with TFR etc – As its role as a nuclear bomber would have been phased out, they would have been used imo as wild weasel aircraft 🙂
The magnet idea has never occurred to me. makes perfect sense lol! On all of the high performance cars ive had ive made a point of installing magnetic sump plugs!! lol
(again rich apologies, tell me to butt out if you want me to lol)
I dropped all of the old oil out of number three, dropped all of the filters and cleaned them myself – one of the first jobs I was put down to do all that time ago.
There was no metal/glitter in the oil at that time.
I think the other thing to bare in mind James is that the photos published are actually of the same two cam lobes of the (24?) Valves inside the engine, only two afaik have really knackered lobes, I believe there was a third that wasnt so great either but not as bad as the other two.
There is the other small matter in that all the time effort and money (on both sides) has not been put into her so she can spend all of this summer sat dormant on the ramp at Airbase.
Lastly, the barn is some 20 odd miles from baginton, on a farm somewhere in deepest darkest warwickshire, the decent donks are buried under various piece of airframe/tyre and other associated aviation junk :diablo: so you’d need to spend a day/two down at the barn moving crap about until you can get a tug onto one of the engines (after finding which of the remaining 7 is the best and most complete… – pulling it out of the barn, loading it onto a low loader (which we dont have) taking it to cov, unloading it etc. then taking number 3 off, putting her onto the dolly that the new donk came on etc
Its not as simple as it may seem chap 😉
No one is thinking those cams are going to get any better mate 😉 We all know she needs an engine change, but how long has it taken to get to a stage where number 2 can now be bought back to life…
As Rich has said, if she can get through the majority of summer then all will be good 🙂 and a new donk sourced and put on.
The old one of course, donated, to me :diablo:
happy birthday kev, that makes you 27 years older than I :diablo:

Rich, please correct me if im wrong – But wasnt the general concensus from the engine chap/the people that supplied the pre oilers that with the pre oilers going, she could be coaxed through another summer of very limited runs etc?
Sorry if im wrong and Im sorry for butting in on your thread 🙁

Rest assured chaps, it will be done properly 🙂
I know its not the plan rich but any chance that the change could be done late summer while its still warm? like late august sometime – otherwise it will be winter again and she’ll have been without props on all 4 of her engines for years lol.
I could get time off work if a definite date was set 🙂
AFAIK the prop on number three needs a good bit of attention – one of the blades is missing a two inch square chunk due to corrosion and another blade has about 3/4mm side to side play…
Yeah, it’s turning the wrong way. I think this has been covered before…
That would be it then! I thought the prop blades were a little bit too big at first, now you mention it, it obviously is a backwards flying 109 :diablo:
Jon from what I understand – Your ex wife has a totally warped perception of almost everything?
Your kids are spot on mate 🙂 They’ll be ok – Just be safe in the knowledge that you’re the one that deserves the credit for that 🙂

Jon – Shush your face or ill come and help you close it, unfortunately I only break out the jabba costume on VERY special occasions for special people only. Which immediately puts you out of the running 🙂
Graham – You spend your days playing with a hemp coloured hand drier, dont get me started
OH SNAP!
(in case both of you were wondering this diagram should explain it for you)
