2. Are there many ATP operators left as I would hate to see them go completely!!
Emerald (fools! 😮 ) are acquiring a bunch, and WestAir Sweden have quite a few. Many of them (two Gems and most of the WestAirs) are being converted to freighters. Best thing for them, freighters – mind you, they’re so bad I’m surprised the freight doesn’t complain about having to go on an ATP! :p

Nah, the Shed was much more fun – flew lower down, the windows were bigger, so better views – and they didn’t go tech so often. And in terms of “modern” turboprops, IMHO the Saab 2000, and the Dornier 328 in particular, are somewhat better than the ATP.
Flew on G-BMYK 41 times, G-BMYM 33 times and G-BMYL 17 times. Also flew on G-MAUD twice, and G-ERIN, G-LOGB, G-MANL and G-OBWL once each. So, didn’t quite make 100 flights on ATPs. I have no desire to do the extra three ATP flights and make it 100, thank you!

ATPs… Dreadful things… Good riddance to them all. When I worked at British Midland, it was often said that ATP stood for “Alternative Transport Provided” or “Another Technical Problem”… They were also known as Skodas – remember this is back in the days when Skoda didn’t make very good cars!

Titan have some long term contracts for night-time mail with the post office, just as did various airlines (748s of Emerald, Bandierantes of Air Ecosse, etc) in the past. Its fairly reasonable that the airline paints its airplane in the colours of the company it operates for.

737: “So, its a full body orifice search is it?”
Damn u r going again!!!
U sure u haven’t got a few extra Points on that card to take me with ya! 😀
Yes, I am going again! 😎 And yes, I have got enough points (after this trip) for yet another trip after that too! But no, sorry, you’re not high enough on the radar screen to be a candidate :p – there’s a certain lady wants to do a trip to Washington, so all being well we’ll burn off the points on a pre-Christmas trip to the DC area.

Skymonster- bet you didn’t see a Swissair MD-11… but yes, Swiss still have one in service, which is exclusively used on the ZRH-ORD run.
OK, OK… I worked at Swissair in Zurich for two years in the mid-’90s, and old habbits die hard… Swiss it was then! 😮

I don’t “do” charters – not been on one for more than ten years. However, this reduction in service doesn’t surprise me. Its all part of the Southwest / EasyJet / Ryanair syndrome – almost everyone wants the lowest prices these days, very few people are prepared to pay a few pounds more for quality service, and so everything gets dumbed down to the lowest common factor (and often, its very common). Charter airlines have little choice, because in a fair proportion of their markets they’re competing with CrappyJet and the like.
Yes, right this time!!! 😎
And of course I take turkeys, plenty of them – its just that I keep the duffers to myself!!! :p

Ah….. sunny California. I can smell the palms, great shots. I too am off to turn green whilst casually sniffing my bottle of sun lotion. 😀
What is he ranting on about…? If he thinks Las Vegas is in California, he’s already been sniffing that suntan lotion too much!!! 😀
Andy
Thanks for the comments guys… Tomorrow (Saturday, arrving Sunday) its BD706 back to the UK, and although I’m hoping that a fair proportion of the flight will involve sleeping, I’ll try to write a follow-up.

No doubt Ryanair don’t have music – a £0.50 tape for each airplane is far too expensive an item for them to spend money on!
And then there’s the music from airline TV ads… Who can forget “I wish they all could be Caledonian girls” (http://web.ukonline.co.uk/mark.mcmillan2/a_f/british_caledonian.rm), or British Airways human face (albeit not version linked here with the Christmas over-ride – http://www.absolutelyandy.com/tvadverts/videos_wmv1/britishairways_xmas.wmv)

wysiwyg, I’m not coming from anywhere… I was relating the thoughts of a full-time SIA 777 captain, who’s opinion I value very highly, who I know personally and have done for many years and who has thousands of hours commercial PIC, as far as long range 777 ETOPS on the SIA network are concerned.
A good friend of mine drives 777s for SQ, including from home base to the USA. He says that they’re great aircraft, but he really does not relish the prospect of a single engined divert to an icy runway on the Russian peninsular at the extent of ETOPS clearance, in freezing conditions and with reduced visibility close to minima in the middle of winter (and attendant problems with lack of passengers and handling facilities whilst they fix the problem – some of their current diversion airports just don’t have hotels!!!).
I share his thoughts… When you’re messing with flights of that duration, four engines is what I’d prefer – Dicky B at Virgin is on the right track, not SQ, IMHO.
