you oughta come up here sometime 😉 (EDI)

Hmmm… If we did Nottingham East Midlands to Edinburgh in the PA-28, the hamburger would cost quite a bit more than £100!!! 🙁

Why do BA have aircraft so small? Can the do pax flights with them?

Its a BA contingency plan in case Ryanair or Easyjet gain even more market share – if this happens, the PA-28s can be quickly deployed on the UK domestic shuttle routes without them loosing brand recognition!!!

    Where were you? 😮

These were all taken today at Wycombe Air Park, otherwise known as Booker, which is near High Wycombe… We took PA-28 Warrior G-CDON down there from Nottingham East Midlands so we could have lunch – the proverbial £100 hamburger! 😀

1.On the unpredictability of airline fares..”This is an airline! (?) We’re not making f*+#*ng dog food where you know you can fill a thousand cans and sell them for $1.25 this year, $1.27 in two years and $1.29 in in four”.

And therein is one of his problems. Almost any busines can project what they anticipate to charge for their product months in advance – they may not always get it quite right, and in the case of airlines no doubt fuel plays a significant part in the variability of the projections, but non the less if he’s running a proper business he SHOULD be able to tell you what he’s planning to charge. But of course, MOL has to shout and be arrogant and rude, because its the only way he can continue to gain publicity in a world where he’s very slowly starting to loose the battle.

He has a fundamental challenge in that he’s said he isn’t going to apply fuel surcharges. No doubt this is a publicity stunt to lure yet more niave travellers to his airline. BA, BMI and most reasonable carriers have been upfront and applied a fuel surcharge to their PUBLISHED fares. Ryanair doesn’t, of course, publish fares. So its fairly easy for them, in their yield management system, to just adjust the fares they charge to compensate for the increased fuel charge within the base far – no one will be any the wiser as they just pay what they see on the website, and the fact that some (many) of these fares will be a little higher for the same circumstances as they were in the past will be written off by the average punter as variations in demand. He can therefore apply a surcharge by stealth to all but his very lowest fares, which of course he can restrict as much as he wants to make sure he doesn’t loose.

Its taken some time, but the full service airlines have got Ryanair’s measure now, and they’re striking back, as witnessed by BA’s increasing profitability and load factors – they will ever increasingly challenge Ryanair. As Ryanair fares rise (which they WILL do, despite what he says, because he isn’t going to bust the bottom line just to keep the average passenger fare as low as it has been with his increased costs), and as his airline alienates more and more people with its “doesn’t give a toss about the passenger” service, so more and more people are slowly discovering that they can use better airlines (and I include EasyJet in this bunch) for no more or little more money.

Of course, there will always be the European equivalent of the proverbial American “trailer trash” who will accept whatever Ryanair chooses to inflict on them with for the minimum fare which means Ryanair won’t disappear (and there’s always new routes where he can have his successes until the customers become savvy), but for the majority a slow and gradual move back to more reasonable airlines is almost inevitable. Ryanair will be here for a long time to come, but its going to be going slowly down hill in many of its existing markets over the next few years, so its loud-mount CEO has little choice but to jump on any bandwagon he can. Ryanair has its niche and always will, but the future belongs to those strong full-service airlines who have ALREADY proven that they can adapt fight back.

you’ll need to remember that the inflight time on such a short run is not long enough for a full plated meal. Basically because there is little time to hand it out!

Not sure what BA offer on MAN, but not true about the lack of time Mr Bmused. Many years ago in the good old days, when Brit Mid used the DC-9 on LHR-LBA, it was not uncommon to serve 105 drinks, 105 meals, and 105 cups of tea or coffee on the evening northbound into LBA – I’ve seen it done, and as long as the crew had their act together, its all reasonably achievable.

If I remember correctly, one per 50 seats is the rule, more are provided by airlines that want to provide a better service than the minimum cover can provide. So, 3 on a 149 seat 737 and 1 on a 49 seat Jungle Jet is the legal minimum.

Skymonster, awesome photos. Can I ask you how do you get to the locations that you took the photo’s ? Would I be right in assuming that you carry on down the Wilmslow road past the Aviation Park and under the tunnel and turn left ?

Thanks, and yes you are! Right, that is! Under the runways, hang a left at the roundabout, park in the little lane between the gate and the hotel (no no-parking lines in that lane, but don’t obstruct it!). Then its a walk! Cross back across the main road (heading west), up the steps, and follow the path. You go behind the new runway fire station, and then down to the Bolin River and up the other side. After that, you’re above the fence and where you stand depends on whether you get rotations, still on the runway, or climbers – its usually a mixed bag at any point on the bank as different a/c rotate at different places. The approach shots were taken from the field next to the Trident fire trainer – there’s a footpath across the field although the sign for it is well disguised by foliage right now, but its just on the first 90 degree left hand bend in the road at that end of the airport.

Couldn’t agree more… Booking at short notice, most times the so-called “low-fare” carriers charge almost as much as the “full-service” carriers, treat passengers like cattle (except that at least cattle get fed for free), and then assume that their customers will be happy for fork out even more money to consume the crap they offer on board. The year before BMIBaby took over EMA, I flew from there 25 times. The following year I flew out of EMA once, but I flew out of BHX over 20 times. The day the likes of BMIBaby go away and sanity returns to the scheduled air service market can’t come a day too soon.

Oh yeah?? Well ADB have AN-124s, an AN-22, an AN-12 and an AN-74 – either way, if its a pax flight, its going to have been pretty uncomfortable for the punters!

Flytecomm says ADB2820 has landed at Newcastle – if you go to the airport now, I suspect you’ll find out what type of airplane it is!!!
