Well its either an AN-124 or the AN-22 – I know which I’d prefer, and it doesn’t have jet engines!

Swaps do happen, but not that often, mainly because:

    1. Aircraft rotation patterns are worked out in advance, and the higher capacity may be required on a later service on the same airplane later in the day

    2. In many cases crew availability and qualifications may restrict the swapping of aircraft, especially if night-stops away from a base are part of the crew plots

    3. Swiss use some of the GVA-ZRH-GVA services to move a/c from and to maintenance and sell these “ferries” anyway to make some money out of what would otherwise be a total non-rev sector

    4. Smaller a/c wouldn’t always work on longer sectors due range/payload restrictions

Once published in the schedule and sold on their CRS and on GDSs, airlines really have an obligation to operate their flights – they’re not charter airlines, you know. A few weeks ago I flew ATH-FRA on a Lufthansa A300-600 that couldn’t have had more than about 30 people on it total – makes for a nice ride for the passengers, even if its not a money spinner for the airline!!!

Oooo… I only screened that one on a.net a few hours ago, and at the time was thinking “that’s quite a sharp paint job” Nice one! Its going to get quite a good viewing over on a.net, because I put it on the a.net home page banner.

LOL!! It was -8 C, and I had to warm the camera batteries up in my armpit before I could take the picture.

Remind me never to buy any second hand camera batteries from you!!!

I hate people who post pictures like that late in the summer – it reminds me that the cold weather is on the way again, and I DON’T like cold weather no matter what photo opportunities it brings. Really nice pics though – be sure I won’t be out and about trying to get similar ones in the coming months!!!

    Thanks guys…

Yes, I think that the A300 looks magnificent in Monarch’s new colours (first time I’ve seen one in new colours). The Copper Chopper seemed to be checking us out – a friend I was with had a HUGE lens and later the ground cops came past for a close look, but left us alone. Seriously, no idea, it came from the north, went up and down the soruthern perimeter and then went back north again.

I see Peter Max was in Manchester again today – seems like I always pic the wrong day, as that’s another I still need to photograph.

    What is a “REAL” airline?

T5 is right… I’m in the fortunate position that for the vast majority of my flights either (a) my employer pays for them when I’m working, or (b) I use frequent flyer miles to to travel when I’m travelling in leisure time.

I have flown with BMIBaby (twice – mostly a dreadful experience), EasyJet (twice, and the A319 wasn’t that bad!), and MyTravelLite (once – absolutely aweful), but I haven’t been on a charter flight for many many years.

Can’t remember for sure – not long though… Might have been only one summer season. For what its worth, British Midland (Derby Airways) also operated scheduled services on DC-3s to Bembridge many many years ago.

Ah the Dash-7s though – wonderful turboprops they were! I used to like sitting in row one, which faced backwards – quite an interesting experience. I remember flying into BHX one day from LHR, and the Dash-7 landed on the short runway 24. Even better than that though, he touched down on 24 and vacated left onto taxiway D which goes to the main apron, BEFORE reaching the main runway 15/33 – must have been no more than 400m landing roll – quite amazing.

Another useless fact about British Midland’s Dash-7s – one of them was used to open the new Welshpool airfield some years ago. The airport has an 830m runway. I think that the local population had hopes that its landing there signalled the possibility of scheduled services from Welshpool but it never happened and I presume that the Dash-7 is the largest aircraft to have ever landed there.

Didn’t fly on charters very often… My list includes only British Airtours 707-400 (Conway powered), Dan Air Comet 4b and 4c, Orion Airways 737-200, Aviogenex 727-200, British Airtours 737-200, Dan Air 737-400. And that’s about the lot – I fly “real” airlines now!!!

Same thing happening at Nottingham East Midlands – the local paper has nick named them “BMIMaybe”!!! They haven’t got a service backup aircraft right now (which was in the plans) and they’re subbing two a/c too. They’re spread far too thin and the end result of that, as seen above, is almost inevitable.
