Lockheed Martin says open to Indian parts in Aegis

SINGAPORE (AFP) — US defence industry giant Lockheed Martin said it is open to using some Indian components if chosen to supply the country’s navy with its Aegis ballistic missile defence system.

“Because of the way the Aegis combat system is constructed, there is the ability to put specific indigenous capabilities in portions of it,” Ric Rushton, director for sea-based missile defence at the firm, told AFP late Monday.

He said the system is built on the principle of “open architecture”, allowing countries buying it to use parts made at home, in the same way Japan and South Korea did.

Those countries, the two top US allies in Asia, have naval destroyers equipped with Lockheed’s high-tech Aegis system, which is designed to track incoming missiles and shoot them down.

“A similar model could work in India if that’s what they are interested in,” said Rushton, who was in Singapore for the IMDEX Asia 2009 maritime defence show, which opened Tuesday.

Rushton said no decision had been made by India.

“It’s their timeline. I think they are looking to make a decision sometime this year,” he said.

“I’m very optimistic about it. I think there is a solid operational requirement on the part of the Indian navy, they need this kind of capability.”

If the iaf were so confident about their potential, why haven’t they carried out their “surgical” strikes against Pakistan? Assuming they ever get that far that is.

Politics and knowledge that Pakistan will self destruct. Why would we interfere and unit that country by bombing. Mulla & Military will destroy it from within.

Wonder who’s the next country past the US, India, and Australia interested in the P-8…….Of course the current P-3 Orion operators is long and many will be looking for replacements soon!

Pakistan is one of the P 3 operators. I certainly hope they don’t get the P-8.

    More Poseidon movies.

I am wondering if we will one day reach a nuclear free world ?

Perhaps the stage will come when the major protagonist will get sucess in developing conventional Thermonuclear device the one that does not need a fission trigger for fusion.

Nuclear free world would mean countries would go to war more easily. Even big countries, World Wars will happen just like that. Civilians are much happier to sent troops marching when they have no danger themselves.

It won’t change a thing, may be a TN device which do not use fission to generate the energy for the fusion will be invetned. All that would do is make nukes safer to handle because of less/null radio activity. It would have 10 X the power of a fission bomb but if the other coiuntries dont have it they will deliver 10 fission or normal TN bombs instead. It wont change a thing.

Really shows the strategic evolution in the region. If India gets Aegis ships and deploy some of them in its eastern oceans, it would be a credible defense against Chinese antiship missiles. Add to that the American South Korean and Japanese Aegis destroyers and you have a credible defense against China’s anti-ship ballistic missiles.

To me Arms reduction and total de nuclearization of the world means no sense. We would have had more wars if it was not for the Nukes.

“We look forward to this opportunity to work with the very professional maritime forces of India and Japan,” said Vice Adm. John Bird, Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet. “Malabar gives us the chance to build greater interoperability with two of our most important regional partners.”

    That is the key. 🙂

You are the delusional one here if you believe the PAF will not lose Air superiority :). Anyway i will stop it at that. When a war comes we will see for real 🙂

    Wishful thinking and delusional…

PAF chief told the government after the Mumbai crisis that it will lose Air Superiority in a week or so in case of war.

Not Delusional, Tell me how many PAF fighters have BVR capability ? The MIG 29s and SU 30s are enough.

That already defines an area where most prithvi launches are likely to take place, providing an area for the PAF to concentrate on. Given the number of UAVs, AWACS and other intelligence sources, in combination with long range standoff weapons, the PAF doesnt need to gain air superiority in indian airspace. It could operate within its own borders and still target potential prithvi launch sites.

Actually incase of a war PAF will not have superiority in its own airspace for long.

The Airborne Laser was being developed to counter against Russia mainly and possibly China. The new administration wants to suck up to Russia for the Afghan route. The symbolic reset button and stuff like that shows this. I am not surprised that plans with vision such as Airborne Laser get cancelled. May be they will concentrate on the soldier on the ground for a while…
