AERO INDIA: MoD gives go-ahead to light utility helicopter project
By Siva GovindasamyIndia’s defence ministry has cleared Hindustan Aeronautics’ proposal to manufacture 187 light utility helicopters, paving the way for the company to begin a design phase and possibly sound out potential foreign partners.
“We will now start working on the programme and we expect to begin deliveries in five to six years,” says Ashok Baweja, HAL chairman.
The tender is part of a combined requirement by both the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army. New Delhi has issued a global request for proposals for 197 light utility helicopters, with Eurocopter, AgustaWestland and Russia’s Rosoboronexport expected to respond. The defence ministry hopes to make a selection by early 2010 and induct the first helicopter in 2011.
There has been speculation that HAL could work with a foreign vendor to develop the aircraft from scratch, although Baweja says that it is too early too say if this would be the case.
Eurocopter, which allowed HAL to licence-produce several hundred Indian versions of the Alouette and Lama, is the likely company if a partner is sought. A possible model for the partnership is one that Eurocopter has with South Korea’s Korea Aerospace Industries. The company is a partner in the Korea Helicopter Programme, which aims to develop an 8t utility helicopter for the country’s army. Eurocopter would also help KAI to market the design outside South Korea.
India requires a smaller single-engine helicopter in the 2.5-3t category, with a range of up to 500km (270nm) and a 500kg (1,100lb) payload. HAL, which will also be responsible for the maintenance of the Western-manufactured helicopters, is likely to create a new division to oversee the entire LUH programme. This will be separate from its existing Dhruv advanced light helicopter and light combat helicopter programmes.
Much of Gripens electronics is sourced from all over Europe. Now i cannot imagine a company giving better technology to Gripen than their national fighters. The F 35 meanwhile gets the cream of American tech, most of it is classified and inaccessible even to the partner nations. Its common sense to believe that the F 35 will have better avionics, atleast to start with.
Jf-17 is like an rd-33 powered F-7/MiG-21.
Tejas is like an F404 powered MiG-21.With so many rd-33’s hitting surplus it’s a perfect opportunity for CAC to try to barter for them.
You are trying to be so funny. Both the AC are much capable :D.
Just Please rule out India posing any threat to Australia. Nor will China, not if Rudd gets his way. Indonasia is the only worry.
Is it correct/official??!! That will be very good news. 😀
😀 It is on show daily day 3.

I think that the IAF is just under an obligatory protocol to entertain — and eventually choose — one of these 6 fighters, now that it has sent the RFP already. We may momentarily imagine if IAF suddenly announces that it is cancelling the MRCA tender. It will cause diplomatic embarrassment to India.
I am 100% of the view that many top echelons of the IAF have already begun seeing the Tejas Mk.II as the MRCA
Hence, some way must be found out by IAF to reject all the 6 contenders after evaluating them, and quietly “sneaking in” the Tejas, and ‘artificially’ engineering it’s victory in the MRCA competition.
Abhi you are hopeful at best and delusional at worst. There is a stronger possibility of the foriegn supplier loving IAF falling in love with the MRCA and ordering 100 more of that than the Tejas MK2 replacing the MRCA.
Actually i would like the middle ground. 200-300 Tejas 200 MRCA and 230 MKI will do.
Please, what’s the good news about MiG 35?
The Russians are placing an order for the same. About 20-30 planes. Shows Russian commitment. And more good news for MiG in general as the Russian navy is ordering Mig 29 Ks.
The Show news daily reports that the MIG 29ks to India will have Zhuk AE AESA rather than the Zhuk ME.
This will also put the MiG in good footing as the 35 already shares a lot of components with the 29Ks.
I have this gut feeling of late that the Eurofighter is the Darkhorse of this contest. EADS taking up LCA consultancy, problems with signing end user agreements with the U.S etc.
Well you never know, this past two weeks the Eurofighter and Mig 35 have had several good news’. Dassault too but then Aero India no show was not very nice.
Oh well what do ’em journalists know . He only said may 🙂 and as did I.
Oh and swerve the INs MIg 29 Ks are getting Zhuk AE AESA. So I was right saying the radar was not just developed for the Mig 35 🙂
where’s the birdish beak on that plane.
Ok here is bad news for Gripen Fans in the MRCA. It is reported in Aviation Week’s Show News Day One that Dassault may block the Thales Radar proposed for Gripen NG in the MRCA as it would be competing against the Rafale.

And some people here were doubtful when i said the Zhuk AE has market outside the MIG 35.

Tejas and FC-1 are two different types of aircrafts for completely two different requirments. Tejas is going to add stealth, AESA, FADEC engine, advanced electronic warfare and quad FBW technologies for IAF. But FC-1 costs mush less, around $ 16 million.
Actually the Tejas was envisaged for a much different role than it is now asked to fill. Otherwise it would have been in service in large numbers already.
But i guess the final product will be worth the wait ! Come along Tejas MK2 😎
Lets say that there is more chance of Saudi Tornados and Typhoons going against us in an Indo PAK war than the UAE F 16s. I remember a thread here just after the mumbai aftermath about Saudi Tornadoes in Pakistan.
The European countries have loser end user agreements than U.S.A.
Indian verison will only be ready by 2015-17
