LCA engine issue is just bad karma. They should just cut their losses on the LCA and shift resources on importing the MRCA otherwise it will be story of Arjun repeating itself. Billions down the tube with nothing to show.

We will have the LCA even if costs more than the MRCA :). It may not make economical sense but there’s a lot at stake including national pride.

Finally some sense, rather than sticking with Kaveri. 🙂

so I think a comparison of the Su-27 with the Rafale or EF is slightly way off.

The latest Su 27 variants can match the Rafale and Typhoon. 🙂 So Can the latest F 15s with AESA. Hence they belong to the same generation, they are just newer designs.

Well I guess the experience of countries vary. Our MIGs have served us well. But you are right about the maintenance costs compared to a western aircraft like the Mirage 2000. The Upgraded Mig 29s are going to be more capable than the upgraded Mirages at a lesser price. Now that is somewhat impressive. And the main problems with IAF MIGs, like their maintenance intensive smoky engines, are going to be replaced.

the unit costs of the F-35 and F/A-18E/F are USD83.1 million and USD82.7 million respectively.

F?A=18 E?F 82.7 million :-?? 🙁 at this price its chances are slim in MRCA i think.

How much watered down will be the Japanese raptor if sold. If its not as good as the real one in A2A then they must be nuts to pay 300 million.

The MCA would be like like an India JSF’ky , it can carry internal and external weapons , and depending on the mission it can act like a bomb truck with greater payload or a low RCS precision attack strike aircraft with reduced internal payload

Well thats pure speculation, we don’t even know how the thing looks like. As for affording the PAK FA and MCA. It could be tight, especially with the MRCA purchase. Which is why I think the MRCA could go for the Gripen or F 16 (single engined fighters), Mig 35 may also be comparable in price.

We have to even out the defense budget between the three forces, I would give the Navy just as much priority in getting the Nuclear subs and SLBM integration. 2 Fifth gen fighters for IAF is a bit of an over kill. I would either scrap PAK FA or MCA.

You are comparing apples to oranges. Development time of combat aircraft increased with each generation as the aircraft became more and more complex. That means longer development times and longer testing. Development of western fighters were quite similar to those of compareable eastern designs at given times.
Comparing development time of the MiG-21 with that of the PAK FA is like comparing the time you would require to develope and test a simple hand calculator vs a complete PC with all the related software…

Some one asked me to give first flight and induction figures of soviet aircraft, I did give of a few. I was not comparing Mig 21 with PAK FA or anything. But its nice knowing Su 27 took less years to complete than the Rafale or Typhoon. 🙂

I have to agree with USS on the fact that Russian aircraft are still cheaper compared to Western ones, if you compare the features. The Mig 29 upgrade if his figures are right is more than bang for buck 1.3 billion for 66 airframes :D, including new engines :). The upgrades are set to increase the Fulcrums life by 40 years.

Easter Europe, most of it is firmly in the western block now, but the Poles could upgrade their MIGs with French and Israeli stuff.

    Oh.. my bad.
Is there an actually date to when the winner of Indian MMRCA is ruled?

    Early next year

The part that worries me about MCA

“It will have stealth features,” he said.

Stealth features like the Rafale, EF, Typhoon or True Stealth like F 22 , F 35

No No No I don’t doubt the PAK FA will be a full stealth aircraft, even if its a bit delayed. My worry is that we have already missed the boat when it comes to the PAK FA design.

I was reffering to the MCA programme in the latter part of my post.

Still won’t equal to joint design :(. The last news I heard on the MCA is not very good either, it says it would have stealth elements, which can be broadly interpreted as LO but more likely to be measures like those employed in EF, Rafale, SH etc. 🙁
