What is the difference between LO and VLO and who decided that?

LO is what the F-35 is, the F-22/B-2A sits on the border between LO & VLO.
VLO is a tail-less design like the X-47B, i.e. that exhibits ‘broadband stealth’ characteristics.
Taken to it’s extreme, VLO would embody replacement of reflective internal metallic structural spars to defy LW radars in the 2GHz regime.

If anything, Sweetman lends tentative support for the F-35- citing the limitations of X-47B-type automation and the necessity for the man-in-the-loop F-35- but VLO- it aint.

What awesome airwing are you talking about. 12 Su 33s instead of 12 MiG 29Ks.

Hmmm… let’s see, buy her for a poultry $20m, and then outfit her for $2bn (i.e. ’29Ks, Rafales, Super-Hornets etc. once steam cats. have been installed & ski jump/VLS removed)…:)

Once the Obama administration announces cuts/delays to F-35 procurement (an inevitable casualty of US & global economic conditions), the ‘cheapest’ F-35s will still be well-over $100m apiece (but I concede lower than the $200m per unit of the LRIP 550, not Sweetman’s figures btw, but JET/Pentagon iirc).

Ironically, this will price the upgraded 4G+ fighters back into the market- I guess the optimistic 3:1 kill ratio will be comprehensively negated by the 3:1 price/purchase ratio 😀

There are fundamental flaws in procurement and corruption within the armed forces and MoD. As long as that continues the Russians will have a good foothold.

The Indian MoD should have usurped the Chinese and pounced on the Varyag in the 90s. They could have outfitted her at their own pace & cost, inviting tenders from Western yards & naval specialists, think of the awesome air-wing the IN could have deployed aboard her.

Even at this stage the Indian Govt. should cancel the Gorshkov order and save the $2.4bn and take legal redress against Sevmash for the remaining $500m. Believe me ,there are plenty of shipyards around The World that would kill for an aircraft-carrier order (IF the cost hike reports are true).

Everybody is trying to court India as a strategic & economic ally (also as a stalwart against China). It’s not in Russia’s interests to play silly games.
Having said that, maybe the Russians are seeing how far they can push the Indians, they may use Gorshkov/Nerpa as a ‘pressure point’ to split the MMRCA order because they know they can’t win it outright (maybe 60/40)- anything that redresses MiG’s balance sheet.
Such tactics may appear underhand- but EVERYBODY does it.

However, with Israeli & Western Defence firms clamouring for the Indian Defence market, Russia can’t afford to upset one of her few remaining friends & allies.

Well, the issue is not being resolved either way! So, it makes you wonder…..unless you believe its somehow India’s fault???

I don’t believe it, afaik negotiations are ongoing and nothing official on a $700m price hike has been mentioned. It makes no sense whatsoever, the timing is truly idiotic (with MMRCA, PAK-FA, MTA etc. deals in the balance).

Besides, India could easily cancel Gorshkov wthout paying anything more than the $500m saving $2bn+, the political & economic fallout would be immense- Moscow would not risk such a crass move. I think the report is BS.

There are some information from insiders that a mechanically moveable AESA (X-band) will be fit on PAK-FA.

I seriously doubt that, it would compromise its LO. Besides, it has conformal L-Band AESAs.

Those weren’t for pilots, but for infantry 😉

😉 I’ll trade secrets with you: Supersonic thrust-vectoring in the upper troposphere will compromise the structural integrity of your fighter……now burn after reading 😉
