Does Monarch not sell a lot of flights through travel agencies (package deals)? That makes advertising unnecessary, since most seats are sold in advance to the agencies. Any seat sold seperately is merely icing on the cake. Same goes for all charter airlines.

Anyone know the story behind the 74 on the barge??

    Why ?……….when?………..etc etc.

    Cheers

    Kev 🙂

why: to move it from AMS to the aviation museum at Lelystad airport. The runway there is not strong nor large enough to handle even a stripped down 747.

when: give or take a year ago

etc the 747 is now open to public tuesday to sunday 10:00-17:00 (summer schedule is longer). Some work is still being done on outfiting the plane. Adding engines into the nacelles, making a 2nd-hand AMS airbridge connection between the 747 and the museum etc.

It looks like I am going to have to pull out of this trip; my car needs to go into the garage asap and as I live 90 miles from LBA I won’t be able to use any alternative transport to get there for a 0700 flight. Hopefully I can get to AMS later in the year.

That’s a shame. That’s gonna be a 2 person AMS meet then. If it is a consolation, there is a chance of fog, and the chance for sun is remote at best. 😮

Beaudoin said the CSeries program was on hold, but not abandoned, as it would continue to seek firm orders for the airliner.

By this time I think we can say that “on hold” is lawyerese for “forget it”.

“We believe the market is there. It’s too early to say one way or another,” he said.

Fokker was too early. Dornier was too early. Bombardier is too late. Embraer has already taken a strong hold on the market with second hand F100s filling the gaps.

Beaudoin also suggested that Bombardier was considering stretching its CRJ900..

Yeah why not stretch a plane that is already stretched beyond the needs of airlines. Please remind me how popular the CRJ900 has been?

…or developing a larger turboprop that would seat 80 to 100 passengers.

With rising fuel costs this could be a smart move. However, will airlines commit to it knowing the recent history of cancellations of new projects.

as it focuses on the regional airline market for 80- to 100-seat jets.

Stretching the CRJ900 with “4 seats” will not get it into the 80-100 seats range. So another new project?

The decision to shelve the CSeries will bring questions about Bombardier’s ability to add new jets to its regional aircraft product line as it faces brisk competition from … Chinese manufacturers.

What planes are made in China that could compete with a CRJ?

    He said a reported four-seat stretch of Bombardier’s 95-seat CRJ900 may only be a stop-gap measure.

Just like the highly profitable B757-300 and B767-400 where?

Bombardier, the world’s third-largest civil aircraft

Third? Aren’t they fourth after Airbus, Boeing and Embraer (alfabetical order).

1024×768 (screen size) or 1024×683 (traditional photo size). Any more and you will have to ask permission.

When spotting/photographing at LGW, I always find that going to the end of the platform of the rail station is a good spot, as a/c pass over all the time…landings are better as they are obviously lower than on take off, and there is slightly more chance of getting a decent photo!

In that case I would prefer the foot bridge which is more towards the flight path, higher up, and outside the trainstation (hence no train ticket required). You can also get a few nice train pics there if you are into that.

However, last time I as there some junkies had “taken over” the bridge. They seemed very comfortable there so probably they go there more often. If you do not mind having them around (they where nice though at times intimidating, make sure you explain you are not there to make photos of them and do not point the cam to them) then this is a great spot!

TCAS is mandatory in Europe so yes DHL would have that too.

In the 757/154 collision both planes had TCAS as well. The accident was caused (in part) because of a difference in culture. In EU/US the TCAS takes priority over everything. In the former CIS the TCAS can be ignored when local ATC tells you to do so.

To my knowledge DHL only has A300s, most of them operated by Belgian subsidiary EAT.

They are indeed rather close, and the telephoto lense effect makes it all the more interesting!

The 777-300 (yes it is a ‘300) is 50% longer then the A300. In the picture however the length seems to be only 30ish percent longer. Even less when accounting for the fact the we see the DHL jet at a angle instead of perfectly side-on. Had the A300 been perfectly side-on it would be perhaps 25% longer. So the 777 was higher.

Hmm…how did the price compare with the Canon 70-200 F2.8? Or even the 70-200 F4? The 70-200 F4 is fantastically sharp, even with a 1.4x extender.

My lense cost 800 euro (~550 pounds). The Canon 70-200 2.8 goes at 1400 so would be just a tad more expensive. 😉

Have not tried an extender yet. Before I get and extender I want to be able to get the most out of this lense. But no later then by May because of the Blue Angels display at Leeuwarden and the Farnborough air show. 😀

Great work Pete! What is your new lense?

Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM. Great lense for objects close by and at medium distance. But for long distance the photos tend to be really soft. Could not have been the weather cause it was excellent.

Simple, get yourself to the easyjet last minutes desk, book a flight to AMS, check-in, go to AMS, take the 191 bus to the Kaagbaan and that’s it. 😀

A bit more serious though, Hugh Jarse desripes it really well. I have been to that spot a few times as well and it is really good. Another option is to stand on the foot bridge over the railtrack. There you are a bit higher so it is almost as though you are on the same height as the planes. Not sure how to get there though, someone local might describe it to you.
