SORRY GUYS…
Please don’t take offence.. But
If you have to do all this to every photo you take.. Then, You either need to change your camera, or learn how to take photographs properly….
LOL, no offence taken. I do not do this with all photos. Just those that go onto jetphotos.net since they are my showpieces if you will.
How did you manage before Digital???
Quite miraculously, considering my camera (Pentax Espio 200 compact camera). Mind you, nothing ever got online. With my Sony F717 is only did a little editing (basically only leveling and sharpening) but looking back I can see that those photos for the most part can be improved.
Cropping should be down to Composure..
At times I shoot a photo from planes that are too far away to fill the frame completely. But since my camera has almost 6MP this is not a problem. By cropping I still get a full frame with the required 1024×768.
Brightness should controlled by your TTL or light meter…
Not sure what you mean with TTL. I do no have a light meter though, so that settles that.
And Sharpness is done by either your eyesight or through your Lens…
EYESIGHT!!!! My current glasses are -4,8 and -3,5. My new glasses, to be delivered two weeks from now, will be -4,5 and -3,25.
And as far as removing objects.. I think we have had this discussion before…
Yeah, let’s not start that again!
Don’t worry about bad double for those two. The photos are completely different. Sure they may both show the same plane, but that’s where the similarities end.
It is not possible to upload more than 2 photos of the same registration at any one time. This alone should be a clear indication that uploading two photos of the same plane is not a problem. As long as the photos are different.
Bad double is for photos that look alike. If you shoot two perfect side-ons from BA A319s at LHR and upload them both chances are one of them will be rejected. THose two WOULD be alike and therefore elligble for bad double.
This is what I do:
1) level the horizon
2) crop the photo
3) resize the photo to 1035×780. When sharpening a photo you get a white line around the photo. This can be cut out later by leaving some margin at this early stage.
4) change colours/saturation. Just a very little bit to make the colours more lively.
5) change brightness and contrast to make the bits in the shadow more visible, and to make the overexposed bits somewhat darker (overexposed bits can never be saved completely though)
6) remove dust spots
7) unsharp-mark
8) selective sharpening if required
9) resize it down to 1024×768 (standard monitor size) or 1024×683 (standard print size). Both these sizes are regularly accepted at JP.net and airliners.net so cutting the heigth down makes no difference. Often it helps the image by removing background. Also, my camera shoots at 1024×683 size so using that size is just more convenient.
10) save the file using a compression of no less than 10 on a 1-12 scale (12 highest)
My guess:
Both PIAs will be rejected for:
PIA 1) Bad crop. Either include the #4 engine complete, or crop the entire wing of. Also, oversharpened. Wedgies appear on straigth lines (PIA logo, doorstyle etc)
PIA 2) Unsharp. Also it is too large. JP won’t accept photos larger then 1024×768 unless it is a rare or very very very good photo. The little prop plane in the foreground may be consider clutter.
Both China Cargos will be accepted because… well.. they are great!
As for the forums. I do not believe you need to have a 1st class membership. Free accounts should still be available????
In the Netherlands during the cold war a massive system of defences where build. The general idea was to flood the plains and defend the provinces of Noord Holland, Zuid Holland and parts of Utrecht until the allies could come in. The flooded plains would prevent tanks and trucks from coming in.
Those dykes/dams/pumps and fortresses cost a whole lot of money and where thankfully never used. However, had there been a Soviet invasion they would not have helped. Either the Soviets could have gone in through the air like the Germans did in 1940. Another option would have been to use a few bombers to pinch the dykes around the coast thus flooding “fortress Holland”. With the exception of a few dunetops there would not have been a square metre of land left.
To prevent these, get a rubber lense-hood. This hood you can press against the window to prevent any reflections from getting into your lense. The reason for a rubber hood is so you can move your camera a bit around.
Another option, and much cheaper, is to put the lense as close to the glass a possible, and put a towel or coat over the lense. Make sure that the towel does not get in view. I’ve seen people that had glued “spikes” on their lenshood. They use this to put their towel on and make sure the towel falls well outside the range of the lense.
I use a Sigma 70-300 F4-5.6 II. It’s a reasonable lense which offers a whole lot of mm for little money. I paid just under 200euro (+/- 130 pound) in a normal store. It’s not a great lense, but it does a good job.
Also, since are new with DSLR so you are unlikely to get the most out of you lense anyway. I’ve found that there is a learning curve when stepping from a compact camera (in my case a Sony F717) to a DSLR. So while you are learning you can safe some money for a better lense.
If you drop me an e-mail/PM I will send you a few unedited photos so you can compare.
The Canon 10D was replaced a while ago with the 20D. This has meant a large influx of 2nd hand 10Ds as people replace theirs with 20Ds (or one of the new Nikon’s). The 10D is still a very capable camera though. I should know as I bought one, 2nd hand, almost a year ago. The results are stunning and will be even better when I get a proper lense.
Today if you can choose between a new 300D/350D or a good 2nd hand 10D, I’d go for the 10D in a heartbeat.
I know someone who’ll be sitting on a cloud right now having a damn good chuckle about this thread.

oops, I had not noticed the sticky (I always tend to ignore them). I hope my previous remark is not considered insensitive otherwise I’ll remove it immediately.
