Ryanair from Stansted to Maastricht.
You mean the 7E7 “Dreamliner”. That one has been going a while now.
Although I think EAL_KING is treated a bit harsh here, I do believe that less abbreviations would be called for. Not just the abbreviations posted by him though!
It is often all too easy to forget that this IS an international forum. If you thougth abbreviations are hard enough understanding when you are a native English speaker, try understanding them when you aren’t a native speaker!
For instance these abbreviations I read very often: LMAO, ROFL, ROFLMAO etc. I know when to use them (more or less), but don’t ask me what they stand for. These may be Internet-101 for most of you, it can be hard to translate when you are not a native speaker.
Anyway, does anyone know a webbased dictionary for abbreviations like that? And as a finishing remark, please close this thread (after I get an url to an dictionary :D;)).
I tried Google and ended up with this official Boeing price list:
http://www.boeing.com/commercial/prices/
As has already been mentioned, airlines never pay the full price because (sizable) discounts are always given. This is merely a starting point. Often savings are given that are indirect. Boeing for instance paying for crew training, support costs, maintenance costs etc.
Anyway, according to the list a B737-700 goes for 47 to 55 million USDollar. The price depending on the amount of toys you install on it. Obviously a plane with IFE or winglets will cost more than a plane without.
Someone living near the airport has given a reaction to a Dutch newspaper. He said the plane was already airborne and that it flew very low over the cityblock he lives making a very sharp turn. “probably to get in a good position to make a emergency landing” (quote translated from Dutch). He feared the plane would crash into his house.
For now there has been no confirmation whether the plane got airborne or not.

Hi greekdude,
I will be at schiphol the 23rd showing an Austrian spotter arond. I will ask him if he minds you joining us. Otherwise I can also come the 24th. If you want I can show you to the spot alongside the runway (I do have to use public transportation though!). Just go to the following thread to see what you can expect there:

The observation terrace is indeed land side.
If you are interested just e-mail me at:

Air Universal is an African Airline operating an L1011 for Sudan Airways. Registration is 9L-LDC and it is, obviously, an ex Delta machine.

To go to the observation terrace, you should go landside. Once landside you should walk to the Burger King. (after a flight with airline food, you might as well pay it a “flying” visit). I am not quite sure how you get to the BUrger KIng, because it depends on the arrival hall you use. However, it is in the middle of the mall and it is huge. If you can not find it, just ask anyone!
If you are standing in front of it, looking towards the ordering desks, you can look to the right (direction of the supermarket).
You should be looking at a pair of stairs with next to it (on the right) an elevator. Climb those stairs and you will find the observation platform.
You can take Monster500 directions, but that entrance is indeed a bit harder to find. JUst follow the signs “Bezoekersterras” or “Panorama terras” (not quite sure which one).
When will you be going, if I have a day of I’ll show you around.
You can buy that on the place near the S-apron as well. There is a mobile snack-shack. I do not know if it is there every day, but most of the times it is! They are rather expensive though!
To get to this spot by public transportation you should take bus 191/193/198 from Schiphol center. These stop just outside the main terminal on the ground floor (arrivals).
Take the bus with the direction Aalsmeer/Uithoorn (via parking area P30). This bus should take you in about 15 to 20 minutes to the bus stop “Aalsmeerderweg”. This includes a +/- 5 minutes stop at P30.
At “Aalsmeerderweg” there is a crossing. Look in the direction of the bus you were just on. When looking in that direction you see a road leading to the left (roughly parralel to the runway). Go into this road. After about 15 minutes you will be at the spot.
There are 2 spots here. There is the official one, complete with a mobile snack shack. This is a nice place, but if you walk 5 minutes further you will be where yuo really want to be! There you will have the view over the S-apron. Here to you will have a view of the planes landing/taking of. You do not need a long lense here, 150 mm usually serves me well for even some of the smaller types.
Just give me an e-mail by the time you are going to Schiphol. If I have a day of (and the weather ain’t terrible 🙂 ) I’ll show you around!
Seeing the planes come by this close is indeed not common, as Roger mentioned. On the plus side, this spot also overlooks runway 24/06. This is the place were all those famous action shots are made from.

And some more from the taxiway leading to the S-ramp.

I come there quite often. It is actually possible to go there using public transportation, but you will have to walk the last 15 or so minutes. A walk well worth it!
On a good day you can see 20 or so cars parked alongside the road. When the AN-22 came by there were a lot of cars.
I tried to edit the pictures to show up a few times. Needless to say it did not work.
Why start with a DSLR? I mean, sure they are the best money can buy, but you do need a lot of money to buy it. Especially if you do not already have lenses that are compatible with the DSLR.
You could start with a cheaper digital compact with a sizeable optical (!!! NOT DIGITAL !!!) zoom. The Sony F707/717 series are really good and easily available and rather cheap(ish) on the internet.
Today I finally picked up my F717 from someone who sold me his camera over the internet. I immediately tried it out at Schiphol (DUH) and the results are excellent!
