I plotted the reported impact point on Google Earth. It seems that the plane ploughed through some buildings, if that is correct. The image is a bit small – the impact point of 980 yards before the runway is left of the blue colored buildings.

Unless the plane diverted, you are looking at the wrong airfield. You’re looking at the military airbase. The commercial airport is some 25 kilometers to the south of Tripoli.

It’s the best decision so far of this government !

That’s easy to say when it is their first decision.:diablo:

The road system to Heathrow is crumbling to bits and there is no valid reason to continue ploughing money into Heathrow when it has reached capacity!

So rather then updating the road you want to move the demand to other places. However, this will quickly mess up the roads at other places at well. Have you for instance been to Luton recently? One minor collision on the access road and there are tailbacks for miles. By concentrating on LHR you can also concentrate your investments and thus make them more efficient.

Thoughts should now be directed at using excess capacity at other airports i.e East Midlands and Manston and start to spread the burden rather than living for ever in the ‘London Centric’ policy we have for airport development.

That has been tried for years now, and failed quite badly. The last airline that started at Manston, EUjet, did not last that long. Manston is too far away from London to even be considered by Ryanair! That should tell you something!

We should also start to seriously look at regulation of rail ticket prices

Agree, British rail is a joke. Unreliable and crowded services are very high fares.

and end the nonsence of aircraft being used for short journeys within the U.K when a revitalised rail system could share the burden.

I agree that using airplanes for these short hops is hard to defend when there is a good railway system. But let’s be honest here, the railway system as it is now is unable to absorb the passengers from airplanes should they be cancelled!

Sure you could upgrade the rail, doing so will take a lot longer then building a new runway (NIMBY’s notwithstanding). The joke of course is that environmentalists hate the though of plowing over 3 odd miles for a runway, but love the idea of plowing over 100s of miles for a railline! And make no mistake about it, you do need NEW railines. Upgrading existing raillines won’t work because the main lines are already at peak capacity. Whether that means doubling existing lines, or adding new corridors I’ll leave to others to decide.

And even if there is a perfect railline, flights are likely to continue to offer direct connections to the long-haul outbound peaks. Just check for instance AMS. They still got flights to BRU and CDG even though there is a perfect Thalys high-speed rail service calling directly at the airport. Same goes for domestic flights in Germany, the ICE trains stop at the airports of DUS, FRA, MUC and various other airpors but there are still domestic flights between those cities. Not as many as there used to be obviously, and the planes have shrunk from A300s to CRJs, but the flights are still there!

It is actually quite common to deploy a new type on a short route in order to train the crew. The first few Lufthansa A380 flights will be domestic hops as well. And back when KLM introduced their first 777 it could be seen at LHR a few times as well.

Latest radio news is now saying one survivor of 8 years old.

Depending on sources the survivor is a Dutch child aged 8, 9 or 10 years old. Apparantly there where 62 Dutch people on board, mostly from tour operator Kras Reizen and Stip Reizen.

Is it just me, or does it look on photos 3 and 6 that the black box has been opened?

Just read that you don’t have to hurry to Geilenkirchen. The 17 AWACS stationed there have been grounded due to corrosion on the landing gear. It is not known for how long they will stay grounded.

    OUCH!
Wrong engines therefore wrong sound therefore not a real 707!

Actually, not all of them have the CFM engines. In fact, I don’t even think there are any NATO AWACS with CFM engines. Having said that, I do believe most if not all of the tankers are equiped with CFMs. The transports, being mainly used for training purposes of the AWACS crew, are also mostly with the old engines.

where can these a/c be seen at work today? I understand Ostend used to a place to watch them fly. Are there any spot worldwide where one can enjoy them today?

    T J

If you want to include military, then there are plenty of USAF 707 tankers, AWACS and transports at Geilenkirchen.

The Continental scheme is easier to paint, easier to clean, probably cheaper than United’s….

    Makes sense.

Also, more recognisable. Nowadays most airlines in the USA have a blue belly with a (mostly) blue tail: US Airways, JetBLue, Delta, United. Continental springs out among the crowd. And in my personnal opinion looks more classy, but that is of course subjective.

I find it odd however that an airline that until very recently was making losses in the billions is able/allowed to take over an airline that was doing reasonably OK.

India To Buy 50 Utility Copters for Navy

[I]NEW DELHI – The Indian Navy has issued a request for information (RfI) to four companies to purchase 50 light utility helicopters.

Why is the HAL Dhruv not mentioned? Is it too large for the competition? If so, would HAL be able to bring a smaller helicopter into the competition?

Airband scanners are illegal, but I have seen them used often on the perimeter. I would not use them at the DUS visitors terrace though. If only because you have to pass an X-ray device.

    Same BTW for Belgium.

Maybe I am being really obnoxious now, but does it really matter? I’ve been to MAN only once, and quickly found out that the AVP is far from the best spotting area at the airport! The place faces the sun most of the day. The opposite side of the runway, at the mounds, offers a more favourable view. And it is free of charge as well! Other options include the multi-story car park or the pub.

The AVP is a great place for “toursits” who want to see Concorde. But as an enthiousiast, I’d visit it once to see… well… Concorde, and then head to the mounds asap!

Did the Etihad Formula-1 logojet by any chance fly into LHR today? I say it high overhead AMS heading from LHR.
