Nice, I would have liked to go but with the snow I decided not to. How much do you have? We’ve got it at 15+ cm now. And it just started snowing again!

Don´t know about your first question.

With regard to your second question, most likely weather related. The weather may be great on your departure field, but considering the weather lately it was probably bad at your arrival field or at least somewhere en-route. Before any flight leaves they make sure they can make the flight without putting to much strain on airports and airways. With the amount of snow the last few days the amount of movement might have been restricted.

On a global scale, not anytime soon. On a regional scale I’d say pretty large.

    China’s strengths:

    • Once they set their mind to something, they will do it.
    • A lot of skilled people.
    • A lot of money.
    • Access to the latest technologies.
    • Ablity to quickly adapt (copy) technologies.
    • A rather unique view on copyrights.
    • (Western) companies are fighting to enter the market.

    Weaknesses:

    • Their leadership is rigid.
    • Affraid to take (technological) risks, they’d rather copy.
    • Not the best reputation for delivering safe high-tech products.
    • Attrocious reputation for developing safe high-tech products (remember the car crash-test?)
    • After sales support is non-existent on a global scale. Limited even regionally, but at least for a regional scope this can easily be rectified when you consider china’s strength listed above. Globally that will be harder.

    Opportunities:

    • The whole Chinese domestic market. And boy is it large!
    • Any market that cares more about price then reliability. Think Africa, parts of South America, big parts of Asia. But also, (western) cargo operations.
    • The Chinese government will support their industry (and it is THEIR industry) so that means an almost endless supply of money and political muscle. In particular neighbouring smaller nations may find it hard to say no.
    • They’d have to hurry, but there are technological innovations that they can introduce first. Think for instance of geared turbo fans. Personally though, I can’t see the established engine manufacturers giving Chinese companies acces to toys like GTF before Boeing and Airbus. The engine companies will play it safe and make sure Boeing and Airbus get first.

    Threats:

    • You just know safety had to come up again.
    • numerous copyright infrictions might restrict sales to domestic only. But personally I don’t see the world economy having the guts to stand up to China in such a manner.
    • What goes up, must come down. The Chinese economy can’t stay in overdrive all the time.
    • Sooner or later the Chinese people will want a piece of the pie and expect European and US living standards. If this leads to a popular revolt then that will cripple their economy. Perhaps even the global economy. But that is very long term thinking!
    • The public will be hesitant to fly a Chinese plane (again the car crash-test comes up). If one where to crash early in the program it will be over for them.

Was the ceremony 52 minutes long? How long will a flip take?

Quite normal for something like this to take a long time. Add in the Beardy factor and this is not at all an unreasonable amount of time. Remember the A380 unveiling? Lightshows, ballet, national anthems, presidents and monarchs… it can always be worse. 😉

Split fleet to replace 767-300s and 747-400s – 25 plastic pigs and 25 A350s, with an additional 50 of each optioned:

Good news to see them expanding. I did not see this split order coming.

Don’t they have tape measures there?

Yes, but they use imperial measurements in the USA. Australia went metric in 1970, and since this is an Australian plane the two don’t mix. :diablo:

I was browsing the fantastic Airliners.net database last night when I came across this photo of the tail of a V Australia 777 at LAX: http://www.airliners.net/photo/V-Australia/Boeing-777-3ZG-ER/1535241/&sid=eaf7b6a2255da84abeeda0ae0d3440d6

In the description the author states that, “It was here to make sure that it could fit into the very tight gate at T3.” Now perhaps I am just naive about such things, but would it not have been quicker, easier and cheaper to steal an AA or UA 777 whilst the crew weren’t looking and plug it into that gate and see if it fits or not? I was under the impression a 777-300 was a 777-300 whether it was in V Australia, United, BA or American Airlines livery!

    Regards,

    AJ

Probably because AA and UA only have 772s, not 773s. The length of the 773 is quite a bit longer. Also, the raked wingtips make the wingspan a bit larger then those used by AA, UA.

I can’t believe the check pilot was not put on non-active for this stunt.

One question though, what happens if the circuit breakers break of themselves. It sounds like the pilots would hae a hard time replacing them when the concequences might be considerable.

Excellent shots! What’s the cost of one these tours?

They are twice per year and you will have to sign up for them. They just opened “bookings” for the 2010 edition which will be held september 11th and 12th. Due to the overwhelming demand you can go only one day, not both. The costs, a measly 10 euro to cover the bus expenses. The Air Clipper association has arranged a special deal with a local hotel offering you a room with double bed for 70 euro. Not bad at all!

Although not quite the same, the Zürich tour was excellent. They run every few minutes, cost just €8.00 per person and last for around 45 minutes, stopping off along the way at numerous interesting parts of the airport. You can, however, only leave the bus at the grassy area next to the runway. Since Zürich’s viewing terrace is now closed, I am assuming that these tours no longer run. Does anybody know?

I have not been there since that terrace closed (the one one the satelite terminal is still open) but according to the Swissport website the tours are still going.

I have mostly had bad experiences myself.

I have a long name that won’t fit in most computer systems. Therefor the name on my passport is different from the name used on my bank account/creditcard. To top it of, most airlines have less space for names then my bank, so the airline gets another name altogether. So when travelling I go under three names, not even counting names for insurance policies, car rentals, hotels etc.

This means that the self-check in never seems to recognise me. Even if I swipe the passport or the frequent flyer card (KLM Flying-Blue) the system won’t check me in and refers me to the desk.

Skywest has purchased an additional Fokker 50 turboprop to add to its fleet, which it says will help improve its on-time performance and add capacity.

Is it known where the plane will come from? Will it be ex KLM Cityhopper?

Is the Fokker 50 what used to be called the Fokker Friendship?

The F50 is a heavily updated version of the F27 Friendship.

remember that in the UK employment law states that any position advertised internally must also be advertised to none-employees.

Remember I am not English, and as such was unaware of that law. 😉

Regardless, they could have hired someone from another company at the airport. Someone that would thus have a valid and current ID card. This I already mentioned in my original post.
