Are these from the terminal, or somewhere nearby (walking distance)? Last weekend I was very tempted to take a Easyjet from Amsterdam to Milaan. As you say, it might well be the last chance so maybe I can go this weekend instead.

Why not, there are already plenty of construction companies in the area working on 120.000+ new houses in the Thames Estuary. Adding a new airport should be a piece of cake.

If build it will get the same NIMBY treatment as LHR had. Probably even worse as LHR has been there for ages, and LHR-lite is a new development.

Was he trying to mimic the Dutch accent? With the exception of a few words it sounded English to me. But that guy does not seem to be right as coach. He already seems to accept he will loose!

We’ll have to start a campaign to stop BD being swollowed up by the giants of Europe. It will come to the stage in only years to come where there will be just 1 maybe 2 or at a push – 3 airlines in Europe. The AF/KLM group, the LH group and some sort of amalgomation from BA.

    Who knows?!?!?!?!

    Something like:

    1) LH/LX/SN, possibly OS, SK, BD
    2) AF/KL, possibly a reborn AZ, CSA, OS, MA
    3) BA/IB, possibly OS, MA

For the network carriers the only wildcards are Austrian, Malev, TAP and BMI. And I would not be surprised to see BMI go in whole or in part to a foreign (non-EU) airline. With the slots BMI has a take-over might be lucrative for the likes of Emirates. Then there are also Alitalia and Olympic but they will have to liquidate first before they are of interest to anyone.

Then on the low cost front I would expect also 2 or 3 left:

    1) Easyjet
    2) Ryanair

Those two are a given. Assuming they are not affected by a crash they will last. There are lots of smaller carriers that have their niche, but not enough muscle to break out of that niche and into U2/FR territory. Next to that there are plenty of carriers that are clinging on for life.

Wildcard amongst the LCCs is Air Berlin. They are large, have a good reputation and a very good product. But they are extremely heavily in debt and are still in the proces of merging the 5 (!) carrier they bought the last 5 years (Germania, LTU, FlyDBA, Niki, Balair and they are working on buying Condor). Perhaps they will succeed, perhaps they are bought by someone else now their shares are worth so little. I for one believe that Easyjet would be a perfect match. There is little overlap on routes and the service provided matches quite well.

Right one down, two to go. LH has announced that it was looking to take over SK, BD and SN. SN is now under LH crontrol (*A i would imgagine wont be long around the corner), just waiting for them to announced both SK and BD.

BD though is been looked up and down by EY, Again i dont think they will although you never know what is around the corner in this mad world of avation.

LH is also looking at Austrian. I wonder though if LH has the financial means, or the organisational flexibility, to take over 4 carriers in rapid succesion. I would not expect LH to take over all 4 carriers.

OS is also being looked at by AF/KL and as you mentioned EY is interested in BD.

I wonder how many independant airlines will be left in Europe say 5 years from now.

    nice pics!

I can’t believe how sad some Police Officers are. Proper Jobsworths.

Terrorism act?! Are they for real….so is that just a caution or are you now a known terrorist?! :diablo:

Nah it means nothing. That article is just an excuse to stop anyone they please and ask for identifcation.

The officer mentioned how impressed he was with my Dutch ID-card. He was day-dreaming out loud on how the UK should introduce something similar. Well, fair enough. However, the plod does not seem to know how to read. As my first name he wrote down my first name and my first christian name. For my family name he used my second christian name. My actual family name was not written down! So having an ID card really solves nothing!

Edited to add: the card has descriptions in Dutch and English, and the family name is in bold. So there is no way he could (should) have missed it.

‘Anyone heard of an incident aboard a Fokker 50 at Schiphol over the last two weeks? I was sat next to a very nervous passenger the other day. She was in tears, and told me she’d been on a flight that had to land and have an emergency evacuation (smoke, etc.). I have found no further info on this anywhere.

Nothing known to me. I checked back on unscheduled returns going back to early/mid august. No F50s are mentioned, though a F70 and F100 are mentioned. Neither mentioned smoke, though only partial details are available.

I am also thinking she might have meant the Munich ATR flight. It’s the only one that jumps to mind right now.

Since it was a “Act of God” why should the airlines reputation be damaged?

It depends. Last year Jetblue received a lot of flak for messing up during bad weather. And the blame was fully justified as well. Where other airlines took precautions and accepted fewer bookings and scheduled fewer flights, Jetblue continued as normal. The result was many flight cancellations followed by a ripple effect through their entire network. Other airlines where affected as well, but nowhere near as badly.

Nice photos, and interesting to see the snowplow parked in front of the XL 737 in your second photo. A sign of the times I suppose.

Just heard on the news that Alitalia have started going bust aswell.

Alitalia is a zombie airline. They died years ago, they just don’t realise it yet. As soon as the politicians decide they have had enough, and that moment seems to be drawing nearer but who knows with Italian politics, Alitalia will be gone.
