    Because only 20 photos per post are allowed, here is the conclusion:

    On the way back we passed a small parking area from which the “Putin platform” could be seen. Time to park the coach! To look over the fence some climbed into a construction carrying a pipeline over the road. This was particularly usefull for photographers.

    Brilliant! You’re so lucky.

    If only…

    had I already mentioned some @$$H0!€ Russian stole my camera and both spare lenses? I’ve got insurance on the lot, so replacing it won’t hopefully be a big deal, but I did loose 6GB worth of photos.

    Nice! I’ve been there once, but did not see much due to fog and a crappy spotting area. Where did you take the photos? Do you have a streetname or a link to the spot on Google maps?

    Brilliant Pieter….one place i have never been is Russia..must try get there before all the Russian tin disappears for good..bring on the other threads!

    Better not wait much more then a year. Having been there two years ago as well, I must admit this trip was kind a disappointing.

    Most of the interesting Russian planes have gone now. The Tu-134 is no longer in use except for some excutive jets. The IL-86 has gone away completely, the older model Tu-154 have gone entirely and of the M model only a handful were seen in operation. This year I did see quite a few more IL-62s then two years ago which really surprised me. None of them in the air though.

    The Russians are renewing their fleet at a fast pace. Not just with dull 737s and A320s though (although regretably the majority are). At Pulkovo I’ve seen four Rossiya An-148s and at Sheremetyevo all but three Aeroflot SSJ’s where seen. Surprisingly only one SSJ was seen in action. The rest where lined up at long term parking. I wonder if Aeroflot is really happy with them considering over half their fleet were parked during our two hour visit at Sheremetyevo?

    Nice selection!

    The DC-8 at Oostende, was that the only one? Last time I was there, about a year ago, two more DC-8s where stored here.

    Maybe a dumb question, but will there be any difference in build quality between a European assembled airbus, a US assembled airbus or a Chinese assembled airbus?

    In the auto industry cars are build all over the place. And you often hear about varying quality standards. For instance the Mexican build Volkswagens are considered inferior to the German build Volkswagen, even though they are the same models. Would the same apply to aviation?

    I’ve once been told that the Fokker assembled F-16s are build to a higher standard then the Lockheed build ones. Not sure if this is true though, the story was told by a former Fokker employee who might have been just a tiny little bit biased.

    I’m surprised KLM carried on as long as they did with the MD-11.

    KLM’s are the youngest MD-11s around. They are the most efficient model of MD-11s. What also helps is that their leases are dirt cheap. If I am not mistaken the lease came up for renewal around 2002-ish when the aviation industry was in a mayor depression.

    Considering the low value of CRJ-200s these days, I think it’s safe to assume this is a write-off.

    Two from DHL:

    my function is TLCM analyst. Which means Total Logistics Cost Managemnt analyst. Normal people would call it KPI analyst (which is already bad enough management lingo itself). I have not figured out yet who came up with the title. Or why. I have four theories:

    • To fill time in meetings as I have to explain to guests just what it is I do;
    • To make it impossible for me to leave. I would imagine a résumé with TLCM analyst is immediately binned since noone knows what it is; (that’s my optimistic assessment of using TLCM as department name)
    • To make it possible for one of of my senior managers to make the “Tender Loving Care Management” joke. Yes, I honestly heard that in a meeting;
    • Alcohol.

    Organisationally we are now part of “Germany and the Alps”. Which consists of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. And our little office in the Netherlands. However, it does not include the French Alps or the Italian Alps.

    Branson had his chance when BMI came up for sale. He was not interested then, so I doubt he is really interested now.

    Announced at Farnborough:

    100 737MAX and 50 NGs.

    Here’s the Boeing news release…

    http://boeing.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=2342

    Since United currently operates 320s, this might be significant that they didn’t order 320 NEOs.

    This order was a toss-up. Remember that United now also contains Continental and they have a large fleet of 737s with (I believe) new ones still on order.

    if the DC-9 worked, why can’t the ARJ-21?

    By that logic we should replace our cars with Austin Westminsters, VW Beetles and Citroen 2CVs.

    It’s funny to think that collision avoidance hardware for aircraft is such a big issue when you can buy a new Volvo or Mercedes that does that.

    Your typical Volvo or Merc does not go 800 Kph at cruise. Neither does it operate in three dimensions.

    There is already TCAS to avoid collisions between planes, although it it only an advisory, it does not take over the plane. That’s how the mid-air could happen between DHL and Bashkirian Airlines in Germany 2002 (link). The DHL pilots where trained to consider the TCAS instruction as final authority, whereas the Bashkirian pilots were trained to take the ATC instruction as final authority. Unfortunately ATC sent the Bashkirian plane straight into the path of the DHL that was making a TCAS instructed evasive maneuver.
