I might just do that π Kev.
Thinking about it further, Air New Zealand (who fly, unsurprisingly, similar route lengths and sectors to Qantas) have their planes on the ground at LHR for a maximum of 7 hours. Far less than Qantas’ 16.
You make good points – I did neglect to mention scheduling, but then how come the majority of flights depart the Far East in the morning and arrive at LHR in the afternoon… Now that seems totally counter-intuitive and goes against what you’ve just said.
Thanks, mrtotty. You are correct the red has been darkened. The airline has been through a livery binge over the past few years.
Going from the classic silver & purple to red to red with different tail deisgn to the dark metallic red you see today (made possible by a multi-layer painting technique only pioneered a couple of years ago).
Here’s the lighter shade, http://www.airliners.net/photo/Virgin-Atlantic-Airways/Boeing-747-443/2202696/L/&sid=4c3422e84796c4f1153a4f93edf8ce99
Thank you, if it wasn’t for the fact it was so cold, I might have thought I’d been teleported to California – the sky was fantastic!
The Malaysian A380 does look impresive, let down slightly by the minimalistic tail I feel.
Other than the small issue of it was cold, I was being rather blasΓ© about the fact my camera battery had lasted 3 airport visits and was still showing full 3 bars. It is therefore no surprise to say, that it stopped dead half way through photographing a Virgin A330. I was able to squeeze out a few more shots by letting it rest, but the 14:00 egyptair departure had no chance, sorry :p
Indeed it does, thanks ThreeSpool.
The only problem I can see with one in the tail, is it would disrupt a lot of airflow. The most modern engines have massive fan diameters.
This could be rather bulky to place in the vertical stabiliser. A solution would be to have the engine situated in the bowels of the aircraft (below the stabiliser) with side or upper mounted air intakes (similar to most fighter jets).
Great news, a lot of the growth has come from the east. It will be interesting to see if Boeing does something similar to Airbus and now builds a plant in the region?
Two great photographs.
I’d decided to catch take offs as that’s where I thought the exciting metal would be. Had I known these two were coming in, it may have been a different story.
It’s always the ANZ Hobbit for me π
Thanks Chris, Newforest. It was indeed a wonderful winter’s day, I had a similar problem with the light a couple of weeks back when trying to photograph Aeromexico. The days are just too damn short! π
Top class images Chris. I don’t suppose you happened to see the home page of airliners.net today did you? π
I’ll update my images to show the location on the map. For 747s, A340s & A380s (and other low, slow departers), there’s a grass verge just east of the Southern Perimeter Road Esso filling station (TW6 3PF) that overlooks T5.
For lighter and more agile aircraft such as the 767, 777 & A330 – you want to be slightly further back from the runway so as to get a better perspective, so I suggest the Oaks Road bridge next to The Rising Sun pub (TW19 7LB). π
The two are within easy walking distance of each other.
I’ve already got it with snow
Yup… So I see π
very promising future in 2013 for c919
I wouldn’t bet on that π
when compare to other rivals
c919 sale = 380
russian mc21 = 248
japanese mrj = 165
Looks impressive, but let’s take a look at the international sales figures;
C919 = 5% of sales to non-Chinese operators
MC-21 = 21% of sales to non-Russian operators
MRJ = 94% of sales to non-Japanese operators
As you can see, the others have broken the international market far better than Comac have.
Ive been down there today.
Hmm… π Chris were you viewing departures or arrivals? I was there too capturing departures, great blue skies ;).
Having recently got an iPhone, I can relate.
But, on the whole, I find it incredibly smart. If you make a mistake, it changes it to a word whose letter’s are in a similar position on the keyboard.
I could write something completely nonsensical like “Jsoot Virtgsau” and it would correctly change it to “Happy Birthday”.
I think some of those auto-correct errors were deliberately placed.
