It’s the same list over and over again! I still think Sweet Home Alabama is better than Freebird though. And The Wizard by Uriah Heap is oft forgotten. And Black Sabbath did far better stuff than Paranoid (not to mention Ozzy’s solo stuff). And where is All Right Now by Free? And wht on Earth is Bohemian Rhapsody doing there? Seven Seas of Rhye (sp?) is a proper rock track.

I think that a Mig 29 is ok on a NPPL so long as one doesn’t carry passengers, retract the undercarriage or bomb anything abroad.

It was just out of interest really – Your incident had potentially dangerous consequences and I wondered where the line is drawn. Surely the maintenance organisation should have sorted the problem out (didn’t you post about this? I seem to remember something..) the first time around.. In which case there is a process issue with them.
Scanning through the the AAIB bulletins over the years, it sometimes seems that the most minor things are reported. Does it depend on the class of aircraft?
Whatever, I do hope that you offer a slow and painful castration to those who are supposedly looking after your aircraft 🙂 As with your former group member, this will have an effect on the trustworthyness of their abilities..

I’m not an aviator yet but I am an engineer.
Where did the fluid go? Leaked out or did it not get filled after maintenance?
Just out of interest loike.. 🙂
Do incidents such as this get reported to the AAIB or does one keep shtum and hope no one noticed…

Merry Christmas to all – Off to Norwich in a few mins…
Hope everyone received what they were after.

I was exceptionally organised this year – got most of my shopping done really early.
That means I did it yesterday 😀 2 more presents to get..

Last day at work for 2004 – yippee!
Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year to all on here.

Dave – Would the medal you’re referring to be for RNZAF aircrew only? Whatever the case, there is no excuse for having to pay for it!
It sounds as if a cogent, balanced case needs to be put forward by someone in the public eye. I know John Nichol has been slagged on this forum in the past (I know not why), but he’s just released a book relating to the bomber war (not read it), but he has connections in the media. Just a thought? Another angle would be Politicians (spit) and of course veterans.
What about Flypast?
Our elected representatives represent US. It is therefore up to US to ask and campaign for causes that we feel need recognition.
It’s a tricky one and needs to be played very carefully to gain wide support. A radio phone in on BBC WM at the time of HMQ’s visit to Dresden proved that feelings were are still running high amoung those that lived through the raids on Coventry and those that took the war to Germany; this means that the PC “intellectuals” can easily tear apart any emotional arguments and thus detract from the core principal of what we would be attempting here.
The important thing is to carry out any proposals with due consideration to the feelings of the German people. This would be the first thing that the politicians would use to stop anything.
Unfortunatly I need to suggest some project management tossW**K to form a basis for the campaign – How about a mission statement? Make it clear, concise and unambiguous. It becomes the foundation of the campaign and something that can be referred back to whenever things start to go off course..
My morning random thoughts – isn’t it great finishing for Christmas!

What do you want them to do, rock up overhead Stanta with 1000 pounders???
In a word – YES! 😀 If they missed they’d have only got Thetford and that’s no great loss. :diablo:
I still think we as a group really need to make more of the lack of campaign medal – It’s a poor reflection on us as a nation not to recognise the survivors and the fallen.
It’s my soapbox and I’m going to use it.

I agree Lancman, but then I think it was a bit ambitious to fit a 6 year campaign into 4 programs while trying to cover 5 crew positions! Spitfire Ace covered ONLY the Battle of Britain (June – Oct 1940) with a single seat fighter so could give more depth to satisfy the likes of us 🙂
Maybe the RAF told the production company to take a hike and PA474 was ignored out of spite? Can any of our men close to the heart of the matter shed any light?
Despite it’s need to pander to the masses I still enjoyed it a lot – this was the best episode in my opinion.
It still sickens me that no campaign medal was issued, and if this forum concentrates on anything for the 60th anniversay of VE Day, maybe there’s no better cause than this. These men, like others of their generation are getting fewer every passing year – I’d love to give them something back.
My favourite quote? The Gunner looking for a pilot when forming crews – I won’t repeat it because I wouldn’t do it justice, but it made me smile!
In all a far better use of public broadcasting than many programs shown these days.

Go on a bit don’t I…
Mike, luckily I’m nowhere near being a Chief Eng (at least not in the car industry), that is even more remote from the sharp end!!
JC
So are unlicenced volunteers at Old Warden allowed to do anything more than clean the aircraft? I had heard not (but I’d like to have it confirmed by one who knows!).
Some of us just like being up close and personal with old aeroplanes though – I’ve used all the free rope that she who must be obeyed has payed out for hobbies, otherwise I’d be volunteering 🙂
JC
I don’t get paid for that either (and although we’re working on AA machines it’s a little more complex than that)!! Jaguar pays my mortgage, and the Dak work gets me in trouble at home, gets me filthy, get’s me bloomin’ cold and is a great way to practice REAL engineering. As opposed to project managing and chasing people for pieces of paper (such is the life of a “senior engineer” in a global organisation). I’m not even allowed to pick up a spanner in my “proper job” any more 🙁
Oops that was a rant wasn’t it!
I can see what R means though – and at least gliders don’t p*ss oil everywhere!!
Anyhow chances of getting near a PPL are pretty slim for the foreseeable future unless I can come up with a really cunning plan. One devised by a cunning fox with a degree in cunning from the cunning university (with apologies to Elton and Curtis).
JC
Two more Dakota’s should be in the air during 2005.
JC
Thanks chaps!
To sum up then, Gliding is a good adjunct to the PPL (possibly better to glide first then go noisy though), however gliding clubs and the gliding scene requires more time and commitment to the club as opposed to just turning up and flying. Gliding is also cheaper!
Would that be accurate?
So moving on a stage (or 10) would one need a CPL for tug work? I’m speculating here, but would being in a gliding club for a few years and getting a powered licence put one in a good position for becoming a tug pilot? Not a serious question – just thinking as I go along!
Probably all academic as I doubt I will have any spare time in the coming couple of years due to work and Dakota commitments.
