So to ask a question that has been on my mind for a while now…

What is the specific reason for not being able to operate some decent cold war metal, such as Lightnings, Buccaneers etc? I’ve heard a few things, but can someone put out a DEFINITIVE answer? Why for example are Gnats and Provosts flying in private hands but not the really impressive stuff?

TIA! And apologies if this has already been discussed at length, I really must try the forum search thingy….

Would love to see a Lightning, Buccaneer and Phantom in the air again.

She was too skinny in BJD.

Don’t like skinny birds – elbows like chisels. Be like sleeping with my toolbox!

    RANT!!!!

Bernie and Max need to get their fingers out of their arses and look at what’s happened to the sport over the last 10 years – it’s truly terrible. An F1 car at full berries on it’s own is still an awesome sight, comparible to your favorite flying machine. However, when the purpose the machine was built for is diluted to a 90 minute dirge, it all becomes a little pointless.

I used to put everything aside to watch a Grand Prix – I now sometimes remember to catch the highlights. When I heard that the British GP was off the plot for next year I was actually quite pleased in a way. I hope that this will be a wake up to the powers that be to get the racing back into F1.

So, what would you do to get F1 back as a believable sport? Me, I’d get rid of refuelling and really stamp on downforce. Fix the size of the tank and reduce the tyre loads. One tyre manufacturer and a choice of compounds. Anything to get the driver working harder!!! 5 points for pole and reverse the grid – Schumacher can show us how good he really is (and despite everything he is the best of the ‘modern’ era – Schumacher versus Senna is something we were robbed of and it’s all gone downhill from there).

Watch Moto GP or Superbikes for proper racing. Don’t let Bernie near anything remotely exciting.

    Ok rant over.

And last night, UKHistory had the Decisive Weapons programs about the Hurricane and the Aircraft Carrier. That should be on again today (I think they run a 3 or 4 hour loop of the previous evening’s programs up to about 6pm). The day before was the Sea Harrier, and the day before that was the T34. I think there’s “new” episodes on tonight.

Growing up 5 miles from Coltishall in the Lightning era, and living next door but one to Chaz Bowyer (his son is the same age as me aside from 4 days IIRC) would have pretty much sown the seeds. The BBMF were at Coltishall late 60’s early 70’s weren’t they? I seem to remember a huge fuss when they left for Lincolnshire.

My Father isn’t into aircraft so much now but used to take me to airshows when I was small – he was at Farnborough when the DH102(?Prototype Vixen?) went into the crowd in 1952 (?).

So for me it’s Lightnings and Lancasters.

As an aside, would it be worth having a “volunteers” sub-forum? Then anyone needing help, or willing to help could go straight there and the offers and requests won’t get lost in all of the other threads.

Just a thought, as restoration and preservation is a core interest of the forum. Some of the more hard pressed organisations might gain a few bodies, and we’d also be able to (possibly!) get a mob together to do big, important stuff if required.

    Discuss??

It’ll be like herding cats, but I’ve found that if you provide food and something interesting to look at cats can be controlled!

This is our (soon to arrive) newest edition. Going by the name of Jetspots Mystique (Misty for short), she is a snow spotted (or Leopard Spotted Snow) Bengal. Will join Dollie (4 yo brown spotted Bengal) and Ziggy (17 yo Siamese).

For anyone who doesn’t know, Bengals are quite mad.

So what’s the background to the Lyneham Comet? I know nothing about this airframe but from the previous posts I’d say getting one “home” to Salisbury Hall would be a valid project. I’m assuming that it’s been stood for a while and would be a road transport job? It’s a bit, er, BIG. So how would that work then?

From an engineering point of view, the technology is “simple” – in the photo above, the main structure is a metal spaceframe with a non structural wooden assembly to give it some aerodynamics. It’s a stunningly robust design and it’s easy to see why Hurri’s were a lot less complicated to manufacture than Spitfires. It’s old school, well proven, engineering – nothing flash or fancy.

Take that into an operational scenario and it becomes able to absorb a lot more damage, and any moderate damage that it does take is well within the established skills base of the Squadron technical staff to put right. Spitfires are lovely but a cannon shell put into that sleek stressed fusalage skin would be a lot trickier to patch up, especially if it took out any structural bits – there’s a fair chance that the same shell would do no more than make a draft in a Hurricane….

Those excellent pics show why the Hurricane achieved precisely what it did.
