Good stuff. I never knew of the hydraulic system. I still find it amazing that SE5a pilots used to change the Lewis drum on the upper mainplane in flight. That idea was certainly thought up by a non flyer IMHO… The mental judo applied to overcoming the problem of forward firing armament is quite amazing – look at the FE pushers for instance. Did anyone actually fit guns to the wings? If not why not? Were the wings not strong enough or was the drag penalty too great (as the wings weren’t thick enough to take a Lewis or Vickers internally)?

So what system was used on later aircraft, such as Bf109’s etc?

Giving away the musical preferences here of my long forgotten youth, but I’m surprised that no one has got “747, Strangers in the night” by Saxon… Didn’t Iron Maiden have a track called Tail Gunner?

What about the hymn ” to be a pilgrim”? Go on – sing it!!

How did I miss that! I don’t even recall posting on that thread 🙂

Been a few years (10?) since I was involved with the Norwich Vulcan – what’s the story? It was always well looked after and was capable of being powered up on the APU, with bomb bay, speed brakes etc all working.

On the basis of the above, I’d also purchase some thread guages. Working out the fixing spec from the bolt head codes looks like it’s a short route to a nervous breakdown!!

So the 111’s – these are obviously powered by Merlins, but they look to my untutored eye like Lancaster power eggs. Is this correct?

So – stupid question time… Is our current horrid weather down to the first hurricane a few weeks ago? Hurricane Alex wasn’t it? Am I right in assuming that weather systems track up the east coast of the US then accross the pond to hit the UK in much tamer form?

If that’s the case, we have Frances on the way and Ivan in about 4 – 6 weeks..

Not Michael Fish (although he couldn’t predict hurricanes either!)

Or even EMC/RFI testing – Electromagnetic compatability to ensure the systems are hardened against radio interferance and don’t produce any unwanted electronic emissions? More of a passive test, but needs doing.

I’m with Steve – Lightning for me. I’d forgotten what a thrill it is to have your internal organs move around because of the noise!

I wonder how tempted the Bruntingthorpe pilots are just to let it take off 🙂 After all, it is easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission….. You could just take off, do a circuit, land and go “oops, sorry”….

Well, the repercussions would be huge so I hope it’s just idle curiosity on my part – but it’s a nice thought!

    JC

What was the name of the Engineering Officer who had an unplanned Lightning flight? “Taffy” Jones?

Glad to see you’re still posting Rob – I’m still a relative newbie to this forum, but a Crazymainer post is always appreciated on this screen 🙂

I’ll have another look at my pics tonight to see if they’re worth posting – Wasn’t that impressed by my efforts TBH!

Great day – I must have been within a few feet of Steve on a few occasions that afternoon (I didn’t arrive until a few minutes before the first Lightning run).

Independance Day is the only big film of recent years that had a modern RAF mention…

The boxes are numbered twice each – does this mean that additional sections could have been added or removed to vary the height from ground level?

The wings are tied so the variable geometry isn’t being used, and the antenna’s on each side of the fusalage are coloured red (and possibly underneath – but these could be safety flags).

apart from that, haven’t a clue!

    A few more….

ATC: “Alpha Bravo Charlie… Say altitude.”
    Pilot (feeling frisky): “Altitude.”
    ATC: “Say ALTITUDE!”
    Pilot: “ALTITUDE!”
    ATC: “Say ‘Canceling IFR’.”
    Pilot: “Level 8000”

    22 November 1996 — Any More Complaints?
The controller working a busy pattern told the 727 on downwind to make a three-sixty (do a complete circle, usually to provide spacing between aircraft). The pilot of the 727 complained, “Do you know it costs us two thousand dollars to make a three-sixty in this airplane?” Without missing a beat the controller replied, “Roger, give me four thousand dollars worth!”

    15 November 1996 — What the…?!
PSA was following United, taxiing out for departure. PSA called the tower and said “Tower, this is United 586. We’ve got a little problem, so go ahead and let PSA go first”. The tower promptly cleared PSA for takeoff before United had a chance to object to the impersonation!

8 November 1996 — Which Exit Did You Say That Was?
A DC-10 had an exceedingly long landing roll out after landing with his Approach speed just a little too high. San Jose Tower: “American 751 Heavy, turn right at the end if able. If not able, take the Guadeloupe exit off of Highway 101 back to the airport.”

    13 September 1996 — Mama Didn’t Raise No Fools!
    Unknown Aircraft: “I’m f-king bored!”
Air Traffic Control: “Last aircraft transmitting, identify yourself immediately!!”
Unknown Aircraft: “I said I was f-king bored, not f-king stupid!”

Pilot: “Approach, Acme Flt 202, with you at 12,000′ and 40 DME.”
Approach: “Acme 202, cross 30 DME at and maintain 8000′.”
Pilot: “Approach, 202’s unable that descent rate.”
Approach: “What’s the matter 202? Don’t you have speed brakes?”
Pilot: “Yup. But they’re for my mistakes. Not yours.”

Tower: “Aircraft on final, go around, there’s an aircraft on the runway!”
Pilot Trainee: “Roger” (pilot continues approach)
Tower: “Aircraft, I said GO AROUND!!!”!
    Pilot Trainee: “Roger”
The trainee doesn’t react, lands the aircraft on the numbers, rolls to a twin standing in the middle of the runway, goes around the twin and continues to the taxiway.

A young and stupid pilot wanted to sound cool on the aviation frequencies.
So, this one time he was approaching a field during the night time.
Instead of making any official requests to the tower, he said: “Guess who?”
The controller switched the field lights off and replied: “Guess where!”

Tower: “…and for your information, you were slightly to the left of the centerline on that approach.”
Speedbird: “That’s correct; and, my First Officer was slightly to the right”

So what’s the reason for the horrible fin profile on the aircraft nearest the camera? Performance improvement or ease of manufacture?
