    seven photos

    Hi
    For interest,
the FAA ‘types’ servicing the spit’s were used as they were the only available qualified merlin personnel on the airfield at the time .
All photos ( except d-day stripes ) are definitely taken on Harrowbeer, on the back of the original photos there is stamped markings.

    ‘RAF Station Harrowbeer photographic section’

( or similar words, haven’t got it handy ) .

squadron was at culmhead d-day and I can’t definitley recognise the background in the d-day stripes pic’s and there was no stamp on the back, however I can’t say they weren’t taken at harrowbeer.

close up of MD120 cockpit shows ted king ? ( I think )

Thought NX-U damage photo was on it’s return from ops channel islands , but I could be wrong !
    Cheers

    starkey stripes

    Hi
There are two published photos I have seen, ( twice ) and one unpublished, ( I was given it in the 80’s, it features two whirly’s one of which is P6974 HE-Z {st/bd side}, & HE-X {pt side } serial obscured !!)
Starkey was 8th & 9th Sept 43, the ‘invasion feint’ was aimed at Boulogne.
Look forward to the photo it might be a fourth one !!
    Cheers

    Whirlwinds

    Hi
Correct fate is that mentioned :-

P6991 of 263 Sqdn lost power on take off ; hit tree and crash landed 2 miles west of Warmwell 9/2/1943.

Most of the photos of P6991 are taken when 263SQ was at portreath Cornwall

Correct , White nose whirly’s were nothing to do with dieppe, It was in fact for operation Starkey, There is a book on the op called the starkey sacrifice which describes the whole operation to test the response of the germans to a pattern of ‘invasion’ air attacks , funnily the germans didn’t notice the new pattern of air attacks and didn’t respond to the operation, however a french village area was heavily bombed.

263 was converting to fighter bomber role and having bomb racks fitted when dieppe was on and 137Sq was operating off the east coast.

    Cheers

( Self confessed whirly annorak since 1970, when the last whirly cockpit was still in existance, sadly now long gone !! )

    RE: Cockpits for Tony D

    Hi tony
Can’t find the pic’s on the site, I would much appreciate an e-mail of them.
Have you seen the argentine air force site, it has same great paintings on it of a/c in the falklands.
    cheers

    RE: Cockpits for Tony D

    hi tony
As I read your post you have a pucara cockpit, any chance of the serial number ?
I have a slight obsession with pucaras I also have a very limited budjet ( Wife/kids/cats/dog/mortgage etc etc ) So all I have is the bomb ? fusing panel from a falkland wreck recovered at the time by a mate who was out there , and a rpm indicator maybe pucara maybe aeromacchi ? and a few pic’s of wrecked a/c.
And also a part of a wing ? inspection panel.
I would be interested in a pic of the cockpit showing the location of the fusing panel, as i can find none.
Pity the a/c was scrapped always strikes me as a modern day ‘whirlwind type’of a/c
    Cheers

    RE: Thanks, Jerry

    Hi
You are welcome, there were a lot of foreign origin pilots in the RAF, but they tend to get over looked in the history books.
Perhaps someone should do a book purely on non UK aircrew in the RAF,
I know there was a russian who flew locally here with a polish beaufighter Sq,
There are probably many interesting stories to be told.
    cheers

    RE: Thanks, Jerry

    Hi,
any excuse to turn thro’ my whirlie notes, shouldn’t need an excuse really, anyway in amongst my collection of info ( I started in about 1970 ) was the answer,

Pilot is P/O D.A.Samant of Bombay.
    a/c is 137Sq P7121 SF-C Bellows Argentina No:7
    A/c hit ground Manston 16.4.43

Well the memory almost got the name right! always happy to answer a whirlie question if I can !
    Cheers

    RE: Would the MoD know?

    Hi,
Just joined the forum, can’t place my finger on the reference at the moment but seem to recall it is a photo of ‘Samat’ from Bombay, he served with 137SQ.
When I find the reference I will confirm or change the above if it is wrong.
    cheers
    Jerry
