Im glad my little report generated so much interest. Its a sad situation that they are in such a mess, Im aware that there is a huge Greek expatriate community in Australia which they are not serving, however with the service levels they are currently offering I presume most people would elect a better airline for such a long flight.

I read recently that there is quite a few English expats in Corfu, at one time OA operated direct from there into LHR. now they have a much longer journey routing via Athens and apparently there is little chance of that route being reinstated. Easyjet have been approached to launch a service I understand.

Athens airports is now quite a joy, not too busy, all under one roof, bright and airy, if OA were better they would be a good carrier to use for transfer connections. I don’t know if they are timing their services to the islands better now, they used tobe unattractive.

As regards to the Olympics I can’t see them ever being ready, the roads, the metro and apparently most of the stadiums are far from complete.

One last thing if you ever try to get a taxi from Piraeus to the airport at about 4.30pm its a night-mare, tried four none wanted to take me. There is an express bus which is fine, its just finding where it stops that is difficult.

I’d say Cubana or China Airlines, i’d avoid both.

I feel the same, it was even more a surprise as their A340s can’t be that old, it looked knackered inside.

3 Million passengers use LPL today so I think your visit would be more rewarding. However I think in the days of Viscounts etc, there was quite a lot of variety in aircraft types, they did tend to look different to one another then.

Eastern Airways are ok, I’d say nothing special and to be honest the fare they charge between MAN and NWI is very high. I once flew that route and they replaced the aircraft with an EMB 145, ex City Airlines. It seemed strange on 8 of us on it, and route is normally operated by a J31.

They do seem quite a progressive carried and have opened up several routes.

I hope you can do make a reasonable connection, and get a reasonable fare with FlyBE. When I flew with them it was not that cheap DUB-EXT but maybe you will be luckier !!

My local airport LPL was at one time a fairly quiet place, it has now grown a great deal which is good, but you need to allow more time for parking now, thats the price of expansion !

Exeter is interesting as they have had fairly regular charters to Toronto. I flew from Gatwick to Exeter once with Brymon on a Twin Otter on a very wet and windy morning.

Other smaller airports I have flown into are Humberside on a an Air Uk F-27 from Tees side. Norwich on Eastern Airways from Manchester, Lydd to Beauvais and to Ostend on Viscounts and Heralds by Janus Airways, Liverpool to Coventry on Air Corbiere Metroliner (was part of Air Atlantique)

    Hi

I also find the smaller lesser known/used airports of interest. I flew into and out of Exeter last summer and liked it a lot. It was lovely weather and had a feeling of arriving at an English holiday resort area. Another reason I like the smaller airports is ease of use, no hassle and friendliness.

Its also interesting how many of these airports were much busier in the past with many more services available. I travelled to Exeter by flying LPL-DUB-EXT and return. It was the only way to get from N.W England to the Southwest by air, it actually worked quite well and I may do it again in the future as I found Devon a lovely county. Maybe there were more direct services in the past, I know years back there was a link from liverpool to Newquay.

Maybe with the interest that FR are putting in airports like BLK, some of these smaller airports may experience a renaissance.

The new terminal is quite neat and an improvement on the old one. I have never flown from there so don’t know about facilities air-side. You may see Keenair, FlyBe and there are a few charters operating as well. I think you are right about the 146.

Im not sure about apron space, it has been extended over the year, im sure they will continue to do so if required, certainly land is not too much of a problem. Liverpool has handled many types of wide-bodies, infact MyTravel were using a DC-10 last summer for extra capacity regularly. Years ago when Wardair were flying they also used the same type on a Toronto service. The runway length is 7,500 ft which is a bit longer than Birmingham’s, its probably adequate at present.

Routes from Liverpool are to Europe and across the Irish Sea. Direct Holidays ran a charter to Orlando for one season, but gave it up. I think the problem was too much capacity at the time to Florida (Laker had come back on the scene, and also VS from MAN) as well as tieing up their 757 aircraft to long, rather than several short hops to the Med.

I think Ryanair seems to have a love/hate relationship with MAN. The FR service to DUB from LPL is well supported, infact I tried to book tickets to fly over to Dublin in August to see a concert. The fares were high, then the next time I looked the flights week full, so now im on the Seacat ! I would expect the Blackpool route to ok and I think FR have made noises about using Carlise, although that maybe a Stansted route.

Euromanx has been operating an ATR 42-300 between IOM and LPL recently, the aircraft is in the colours of City Connect PH-RAQ.
