    DONT TELL THE CAA !!!!!

They will want to ban all replica Spitfires from being moved by road without a 230m exclusion zone. 🙂

Open cockpits are a good idea as interactive exhibits, but with certain limits. If it means access steps ect these need to be safe, its not H&S gone made, its common sense. Far easier to use a cockpit section, this can be displayed at a ground level with a simple wooden frame to access the cockpit, the side of the airframe can also be ‘cut out’ to improve access.

Remember seeing a cutaway Catalina at Pensacola Museum. The whole aircraft had been cut down the centerline and all the crew positions and structure could be easily seen. Not sure if its still there ?

The same question could be applied to any aircraft, DC-4 at North Weald. If we can not be bothered to preserved the complete aircraft, which I think we should, then scrap the wings, cut the fuselage down the middle, mound the thing at ground level so the public can sort of ‘walk in’

Also remember a very well prepared Jet Provost at Halton / Cosford tech training school which had most of skin removed revealing the structure, cable runs and engine, very interesting.

24th June 12.15pm Werrington, North of Peterborough.
Just had four Moths and a Chipmunk followed by Jodel G-BAAW all heading north east.
Flight Radar 24 showing G-BAAW as having left Sibson.

Now 12.30 and Jodel is plotting due north over Spalding
Any details of the other aircraft and there destination ?

OK thanks Tony. Maybe another ‘basic’ question, do all static restorations have hydraulic fluid within their systems ? Never considered this before.

From previous replies the Defiant and Jungmann are two airframes moving to Cosford, although I expect the Jungmann will go to Stafford for storage.

For the interest of a non techie type like me. What is this oil used for ?

Only the last two airframes were scraped, the first four are in RAF service. I dont image there was much left after they had been picked for spares

Good news that time effort and money are being spent on XM603.
Still find it sad that the Avro Heritage collection has been stuffed in the former fire station buildings when a far better location would have been in one of the disused hangars. Really hope that fundraising and heritage lottery money can provide a roof over XM603 and hopefully other exhibits will follow.

I went on Sunday and noticed that the display datum has moved further up the runway. I was on the tank bank and they were definatly displaying more up that end then normal. People are complaining about closed roads and naughty fields, really so you would rather see the end of airshows than watch for free? Duxford had already been warned about the naughty fields before Shoreham so do us all a favour support the airshow industry and pay to get in or stay at home and stop moaning!

Not disagreeing with your comments. But IWM need to understand that the general public will decide on the day to attend an airshow, advanced booking only is not the way forward. Another post elsewhere introduced an interesting solution. All advance bookings 20% cheaper than on the day prices.
The car parking charge is penalising those travelling alone and those who can not use the alternative car and ride scheme. If prices have to rise to cover costs then IWM should have been open and said there was a £2 surcharge per ticket to fund safety / parking improvements.

Excellent set of photos Jur. Just as they should be displayed. No clutter, no special effect lighting and no pointless “info” banners hanging from the roof.

Has anyone bothered to write to the curator asking, what is the plan ?

It was published earlier this year, I will see if I can find it. Before that there was also some consultation like questionnaire asking for ideas.

There have bee several interviews in Flypast / Aeroplane covering the changes. Sadly what is written, whilst technically correct, often appears to be worst in real life.

“This may sound like heresy but why not return the likes of the CR42, He111 (not a BofB aircraft after all) to their home land?” do not give the CEO any ideas !!!!

With the budget for the redevelopement and the relocation of aircraft I am sure a simple exhibition space could have been erected at at Hendon, adjacent to the the BoB hangar, for the propose of a Hundredth Anniversary display.

I remember talking about this, may even have posted it here.

Many museums in the USA have an associated restaurant, this maybe run by the museum or it may be run by a private operator / franchise. But why should they only be open when the museum is open ? Say RAFM Hendon closes at 5.00pm, why, with correct local authority approval, could the restaurant not be open until 11.00pm The RAFM gains publicity as the pub / restaurant with a load of airplanes next door, and the eating / drinking public visit again when the musuem is open. RAFM occasionally have open evenings, extend this with a meal / entertainment package and it is something people will pay for. Corporate entertainment loves these sort of places. If in 2019 the reformed BoB hangar becomes a money maker for RAFM then it is a good thing. Lets just hope the been counters do not throw away the aircraft in the process.

Several things, replying to several posts.

The building can hardly be described as a “tribute” its a tin shed, that for the last 20 years or so has had a name, and some dimly lit aircraft in it. Time for change.

If I remember reading correctly the new use for the building will be :-
    1) as the main entrance to the whole RAF museum site.
    2) as a sort of time line and exhibition space. Hence some design consultant receiving XX million quid. Expect fancy lights and talking heads.
    3) as an education space, something to do schools science and engineering ? We might not like it but guess it brings in extra funding.
    4) all this is for 1st April 2018, so they better get moving.
    5) question is what happens in 2019 ? Expect the ‘management’ rubbing their hands over the prospect of a big open venue for quilt show ect.

I am more concerned by the removal of aircraft from Hendon to Cosford. We can all have our favourite aircraft but to move signification types from the Hendon, where the vast majority of international visitors go, to the Midlands, is unfair. The Defiant is the sole survivor of type and deserves to be at Hendon as it is a RAF aircraft. As with most collections we can not show them all, and some of the German types may well be better displayed at Cosford, or indeed the IWM Duxford. Reports by the new CEO early this year indicated that some exhibits could be loaned out, the Typhoon has already gone to Canada, how long before the Gladiator goes to Belguim, or the Me109G goes to Germany. Losing these, all be it temporarily should be of more concern than the name of the tin shed they live in.

One went to Cosford, there’s one on the gate at RAF Cranwell and T1 XS726 went to Newark.

Yes Twin Otter but they are Domine trainers. I was thinking of the ex 32 squadron BAe125, a similar, but never the less different type. Would be sad if the RAFM can not keep ownership of an example, even if it when into temp storage.
