Auction ended. I did not attend as no interest in such things. The sale prices are available on http://www.batemans.com/sale_results.php?SaleNo=197&pageNum=20&sorttype=&sort=&NoRecords=20

If I read correctly the previously mentioned bombsites did not sell and are now available to buy at the lowest estimate. Do not know if they are open to offers.

As I say I have no connection with these items or Batemans

Think it would look better with the prop spinning….

    [/SIZE]

Agree with you. Better still leave the real Spitfire I with all its history and patina on the ground and hang the DX plastic replica, with spinning prop 🙂 , from the roof in Lambeth. 90% of visitors would not know the difference, and even if the display boards told them, they would still not care.
Same could be said for the P-51 currently waiting to be strung up at DX

It has been said many times before. But what a waste of time and effort is the fitting of oxygen bottles and full cockpit detailing to the P-51 then hanging it from the roof. All that work will never be seen or appreciated, especially by the veterans who visit Duxford. Its no as though the work is either to an original airframe or to airworthy standard.

If both mags survive could a plan be to make FP more news worthy, following restoration projects, airshows ect, whilst AM carries more in depth articles. One assumes Key have also taken over the Icons / Bookzines that AM used to publish, could these be rebranded AM specials and issue either 4 or 6 per year. Thus AM survives but at as a quarterly, like Air Enthustiast used to be to Air International.

“” Times are hard. Where would you make the savings required? “”

Do not spend time, effort and money on the modifications needed to hang the P-51 ??

Am I correct in thinking no original DR1 exist. If so why it this surely somebody must have considered the type to be of interest after the War

The CEO does not necessarily need to know the working of the internal combustion engine to drive a car. Most important things are to know who to ask for advise and not to have a load of ‘hangers on’ and ‘yes men’ follow her from her previous jobs. First job might be to visit some other UK based aviation collections too see what is working for them, and what ideas and lessons can be learned from the many people who have worked on restoration and display projects. Basically what gets the punters through the doors. If she true to her word then I am sure Ms Appleton will be made welcome on this Forum.

Agree that FAAM does a great job in its main collection and by opening the store on limited, selected dates. But a weekend, or even a Friday / Monday would be preferencial. With a 400 mile 8 hour round trip journey, going to Yeovilton just for the Cobham hall open day mid week is a none starter. Shame it could not have been arranged either before or after their airshow. But I expect then them would have more people than can easily be accomodated in the restricted space of the Store building.

Also a shame that the Museum has such a strange attitude to opening the Cobham hall Store. Whilst I understand the safety issues and the staffing required to open surely a Thursday in the middle of October is not going to attract that many people.

Disregarding what aircraft are to be displayed at Hendon, if money has been found to spend then an attempt to link the Main Hangars, Mile Stones and the Battle of Britain buildings should be made. The Mile Stones structure could be extended to meet with the original main entrance thus providing an L shape building. The Battle of Britain building could be again extended, hopefully fully glazed towards the current museum entrance. Sadly a large gap will remain to gain access to the Graham White hangar. After all the expense off moving the GW Hangar and the other old buildings it seems they are in the wrong place, stuck out on a limb, at the end of a long uninviting driveway. Not really sure what can be done apart from some sort of long thin covered walkway, maybe the area could be landscaped with period WW2 revetments, a Harrier GR3 style covered hide, or a Cold War HAS ? complete with vehicles ect. This at least gives interest to the route to the GW. I wait with interest to see the results of the GW Hangar ‘make over’ although I am not impressed with the images so far seen.

As the museum is free entry the management must maximise revenue from the shop and catering, as part of any new building work a new catering area needs to be provided, probably at first floor level with views over the hangar display. With this in mind could the main hangar be extended into the car park providing this two storey extension. This sort of investment needs to pay for itself by generating income and foot fall, making Hendon a place to go for a good meal or an evening entertainment, exhibition space is needed to allow temporary shows, book fairs and the like. I believe these are currently held in and around the aircraft, which in my opinion is not a good idea.

Aircraft wise perhaps the time has come to lose the Mile Stones and Bomber Command themes and simply use the areas to tell the story of Britains military aviation. Obviously the aircraft can not be moved around like Airfix models and some must stay in their current locations. But with correct signage the “themes” can be retained, say colour coded Black for Bomber Command, Green for Fighter Command, Red for training and transport (a field currently over looked) The BoB has a certain appeal, but I think the film show should be shown as an introduction BEFORE entering the building. Money is being spent as we speak in the WW1 collection so best let that be seen before comment, although the removal of aircraft to Cosford will surely dilute the Hendon collection and leave some (overseas) visitors missing out. Hendon has an interesting collection of overseas aircraft maybe they deserve their own space or be displayed as a ‘Friend and Foe’ pairing ? The modern RAF must be promoted, through its history the next generation of service personnel will be inspired to be part of its future.

Re the the F-14 Tomcat, if it had been offer to Yeovilton FAAM, it would have been nice for the enthustiast, the general public would not give a dame, and like the previousely donated F-4J Phantom would have been negeleted and quietly disposed of. Same occurred with the F-105 at Duxford.

Getting back to the Black Mike thread. I am sure this has been done to death but might Lottery Funding be available ? ie saving Black Mike for the Nation , or would that only happen if a National collection got involved. Expect Lottery will want knowing to do as soon as Bruntingthorpe and XH558 memories are raised

Would be a crying shame if Classic Flight do not get first refusal of the Shackleton. What are the undercarriage issues ?

Was there Saturday. Hawk 75, P-40C and P-40M all took off. P-40C only did a couple of passes and seemed to make quick landing whilst P-40M did not display and made a slow straight in approach. Neither flew in the Balbo.
