German Hansa Jets were regular visitor to RAF Wyton to work with the Canberra EW Jammers of 360sqn. Most NATO exercises, such as Elder Forrest, saw Hansa Jet and PD808 from Italy. I will check my personal logs for visit dates but the Spotting group BARG will be your best resource. I will try to find a link to their website.

Congratulations to all pilots, owners and ground crew of the assembled aircraft at North Weald for this weekends Jet Fest. I do not under estimate the the time and effort it must take to move these aircraft around. Maybe I am not the only person who found it difficult to get the best shots ? As the sun moved around things improved but several of the aircraft were parked rather close to each other and the camo Strikemaster was complete out of view. Whilst I am not in a position to criticise I feel it would have been better if the empty space further down the cross runway had been used for some parking. The Hunter was parked in a most unusual location, again given the available space could have been better positioned. Hopefully the aircraft owners will consider repeating this event next year and again a big thank you all the owners who want to share their aircraft with us earth bound photographers.

Anybody have information on the Jet Fest planned fro this weekend 29th / 30th September. Only info I can find is this link http://www.facebook.com/gnatdisplay/…c_location=ufi
Does not seem to have been advertised much. Why ? What visiting aircraft can be expected ?

Found another Forum with more info http://www.forums.airshows.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=82084 they are listing 18 vintage jets listed with more waiting confirmation.

Would guess the Brooklands Vimy would be a better airframe to restore to the fly. Still no reason why the RAF museum example could be returned to display. But where ? RAF Museum seem to have no space / no interest.

    Absolutely gorgeous photo !!
Couple of questions spring to mind.
    1) How did the Typhoon arrive at Coningsby ? Was it flown in direct from Canada, or roaded in from another location, Brize Norton ?
    2) When did it arrive back in the UK ? Surely these things take time to plan, could it not have been returned in time for display at Cosford ?
    3) Why choose to display it at Coningsby with very limited public access ? Surely Duxford would be more appropriate even if only as a temporary exhibit ?

Many questions are asked and few answers seem to be genuinely practical. This one might also be a pipe dream and depends on what is exactly been “sold off” by the MOD.
It has already been mentioned the existing housing stock is privately owned. But…#

Hawker Hunter Aviation (HHA) is a sitting tenant who presumably have been happily making a profit out of their operation from RAF Scampton for many years. With the right business plan and future contracts in place what is there to say that the airfield operations, hangars, maintenance and storage activities can remain, indeed could they be expanded ? It has been said that the hangars, taxiways and runway are is poor condition, but that has not so far restricted their use. Buildings can be surveyed and those not required or past their safe use can be demolished, others given preservation status can be refurbished and used, for either aviation operations or (limited) heritage use. The active airfield site should be large enough to allow new buildings for non aviation / storage / industrial use, whilst still allowing a profit to be made from residential or retail development.
I really do not know any facts or figures but given the many pressures on general aviation could Scampton and its location become a new centre for private flying or flying schools ?
What ever happens I believe retaining active flying operations from Scampton to be the best way of retaining its heritage and importance as part of this countries social history.

Bad news for HHA at Scampton. What number or people are employed at Scampton by HHA ?
Guess the MOD flying work is not directly linked to Scampton but if they have to move maintenance and storage operations elsewhere it will be a huge cost.

Can I suggest that the MOD sale does not necessarily mean an end to flying. There could be a business case for maintaining the flying side of the base. It just needs the correct planning consent and support from the local population and council for it to happen. Not sure of the layout at Scampton, but expect a mixed development including new housing, new business use and an active airfield. Under private ownership the airfield could have a more secure future than under the RAF, given the restrictions imposed by RAF ownership and access.

Depending on your time scale would suggest.
Dover to Manston, both a museum with a collection of RAF types Hunter, Jaguar, Meteor ect and the Spitfire / Hurricane memorial. Note these are separate museums with different opening times.
to North Weald, not really a museum but lots of interesting things to see. The airfield is open, if stopped at the gate just say your visiting the Cafe / Squadron. Sure others will give a better idea of what you can see / photograph ect
to Duxford (or leave Duxford for the return journey ?)
From Cambridge head east via Mildenhall and Lakenheath (F-100 on main gate), dont forget there is a Hunter F6 at Beck Row, just north of Mildenhall, private owned but should be photographable from the road.
to Bungay and the Norfolk and Suffolk air museum at Flixton, do not under estimate how much there is to see and learn at this collection, from there north to Norwich, Norwich city council office have a Jaguar on a pole, Norwich Airport has the Air Museum, Heading west along the A47 you past close to RAF Marham, not sure how close you can get to see the Canberra, Tornado and Victor ? Continuing along the A17 you will past Fleet Hargate with a Hunter in the car park at road side cafe.
Into Lincolnshire, the sea side town of Skegness has a Lightning T5 at a campsite / aqua park. Heading inland you will find East Kirby and ten miles away RAF Coningsby. The BBMF visitors centre and cafe are open daily, but the Phantom and Tornado on the main gate require advance permission to photograph, a Lightning can be seen next to the main Typhoon ramp, and another Lightning and Harrier are within the HAS site. Just north at Tattershall Thorpe is another easily seen Lightning F1.
Back on the A17 heading west you past RAF Cranwell, the Jet Provost and Domine are easily seen from the road running past the guard room, suggest you ask permission to stop and photograph them, to the south of the A17 is a heritage centre with a JP in the court yard and a Vampire nose inside. 15 mile further is Newark Air Museum.
That is probably the limit of your road trip time to head south ?
RAF Wittering has Harrier GR9 on the gate, the base has a heritage hanger with very limited opening times but contains P1127, GR3, GR7 and T4, worth trying to arrange a visit ?, straight down the A1 at Biggleswade you will find the Shuttleworth Collection, Old Warden. Continue down the A1 just inside the M25, is the Mosquito Museum and further you will find RAF Museum Hendon

Hope I can leave you to look at opening times, length of visit and driving time, but any question please ask.

    Paul
