Fascinating story TwinOtter. Interesting to note that oil was transported to Pumpherston to be refined-that refinery was part of the shale oil industry here.

It is indeed a fascinating story – one of their key volunteers is the proud recipient of a ‘Goldfish Badge’; I once spent nearly 30 minutes trying to guess the aircraft that he escaped from to use his life-raft. Eventually he told me it was awarded for escaping from an oil rig incident in the North Sea during the 1960s. A wonderful character! 🙂

WADR the person I ‘encountered’ was down in the skip rummaging through what was already inside, where I didn’t see him and he was very lucky to escape injury!

This was an open top skip and I was levering in long pieces of heavy MDF structure from a distance away. If it had hit him he would have been badly injured.

After the incident the skip was changed to a design with self-closing lids, which you had to open before you could use it – hence giving you the chance to see inside.

Out of interest if you ever go to Newark Air Museum look in Lancaster Corner and you’ll see some of the similar panels that we donated to NAM by the company.

Not really a speed issue, just a bit ‘clunky’ sometimes – don’t believe it’s water related as we’ve just paid our water rates, so we should be OK!! 😀

Re #18: I believe so – but I am prepared to be corrected.

My wife’s grandfather was offered a place there after World War I; but the family could not afford the fees. A relative offered to pay his fees but his father would not accept the offer as he felt his son needed a trade!

As keen hockey player in the 1970s our Grammar School team from Newark always hated playing them because of their attitudes! That said, that I would however have relished the chance of playing against Ed B on the hockey pitch. 😉 Come to think of it I still would!!
