I certainly did, with the additional hope that 32 young people, may have gained an additional interest in aviation that they weren’t expecting at the start of their day – they all seemed to have a great time looking round inside the Wessex!

What was also nice was that this was a repeat visit by the school – so we must be doing something right!! 😉

This just has got to be THE thread of 2013, its very clear to me throughout that the bywords is “The future through involvement “, however to make that work we have to depend on both the people in charge and the people in the know to always involve those who want to be involved, don’t just ask them to pass a spanner or hold a rivet.
What is the chance that all museums whether national or private organise a training scheme where the volunteer enrols into on the job training course, recording what they do and have the work module signed off by their mentor as they progress, finally receiving a national museum volunteer certificate.
Its only an idea..

Such a scheme was set up, it was called the National Aviation Heritage Skills Initiative (NAHSI). Here’s post of mine from 2011 on that very topic:

“I believe that between 750 and 1000 people took part in the NAHSI scheme that was run by BAPC and IWM Duxford; but not every group participated!

Some accurate data on NAHSI in May 2007 – “The progress being made on the National Aviation Heritage Skills Initiative [NAHSI], which has so far delivered 98 training sessions to 16 aviation organisations in the UK; enabling 707 trainees to receive assorted aviation training modules; and has so far seen 382 training certificates awarded. [These training sessions are available free to all BAPC member organisations]” – source PR item from BAPC meeting at the de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre at London Colney.”

Sadly they were unable to secure any funding to continue the scheme! 🙁

Earlier today I was hosting a school visit at Newark Air Museum and at 10.50am we were leaving the Dambusters Hut to go and fly some paper planes that we had made, when we had a ‘low-level flypast’ by a Tornado – as the noise started to subside the voice of an eight year old boy (from North Nottinghamshire) exclaimed “Wow that was reight loud!”

Even better Jim, you could have a free look at a copy while you’re queuing for your pension and try and memorise the listing for each day!

I wasn’t a happy Frog today, went to the Post Office, to draw my weekly pittance , which is called the “STATE” (And what a State) Pension. Four Counters were there, but two were closed. The queue, stretched out of the door onto the pavement, why?, loads of people with Ebay Parcels, single ones, some with bagsfull, and one woman, who is there every week, and who I try and missed, had a Supermarket trolly full of parcels. Over half an hour of waiting, I finaly got served. Why don’t the Post Office have a “Parcels” only window?, then all those Ebayers would know what it’s like having to wait behind them.
