An update from NAM’s RAF Winthorpe researcher seems to be indicating that the married quarters of RAF Winthorpe (in Coddington) may have been in service use until circa 1970 – can anyone provide confirmation of a date later than super sioux’s 1963-67?

Are you aware of the Air Bridge Memorial (tribute to this operation) in the cemetery at Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire. All of those involved were very brave flyers!! 🙂

Not that I’m aware of!

This was merely a ‘public-service’ announcement!

I’m not even sure what, if anything was filmed at NAM – I did facilitate some contacts at the Tribute to the Lightning event in May, but that’s about it on this one!! 😉

It’s more impressive with the aerial viewpoint – taken from steps alongside the Viggen I believe. What I forgot to mention in the last post is that WT651 is a National Benchmark airframe on the National Aviation Heritage Register! 🙂

I’m glad to hear that there’s another ex-222 Squadron airframe being preserved at Cosford.

That’s an interesting recollection super sioux as it extends the ‘timeline’ for the base further than I was aware of; albeit related to the married quarters of RAF Winthorpe (in Coddington). I was under the impression that most of the accommodation had transferred to local council by 1962/3 – so that’s great feedback; many thanks.:)

I will pass on the information to the researcher at the museum; if you have any other recollections I’m sure that he’d be interested in hearing them.

Prompted by jag636’s post I’ve had the ‘webbie’ add a picture of NAM’s Hunter F1 WT651 into the first album in here (you also get a bit of Swift for good measure) http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/gallery.php

WT651 entered service with 222 Squadron at RAF Leuchars on 21st October 1954 and was subsequently transferred to 229 OCU at RAF Chivenor – eventually retiring from service on 22nd November 1957.

For those who have pre-ordered copies – Tim O’Brien’s books about RAF Newton & RAF Syerston are now in stock in the NAM Shop and you can collect them – as mentioned on the NAM website please remember that from 1st November the museum will be on winter opening hours!

The RAF Winthorpe appeals have yields some good feedback during the last 7 days:

Via the appeal request in FlyPast – contact from an airman who served with No.54 MU in 1953 telling his memories of time spent at Winthorpe

Via the Newark Advertiser – an airman’s memories of No.54 and No.61 MUs in 1953

Nothing has come so far from the Wyton / Brampton material referenced in #8 (apart from approximately 800kg worth of Harrier drawings / parts schedules on microfiche – now in deep store!)

As was evident at the recent indoor Aeroboot sale the museum is now disposing of some ‘non-accessed’ items from its stores; the proceeds from which are going towards the new café build project.

The first of what could be several ‘online-disposals’ have been added to the website today; the details have also been circulated to BAPC members. First up are some portable airfield lighting units, details in here!

Sorry for the slightly delayed response – too many emails to catch up since my return from across the county border!

It was good to finally meet up with you today Jim and also your wife – sorry I couldn’t stay any longer; but I know that you’ll be pleased to hear that there was some ‘nose-bag’ left when I got back to my meeting. 😀

I managed to photograph the ex-RAF Woodhall Spa memorial when I returned home and it had even stopped raining. I also recorded the new memorial in Woodhall Spa, although the reflections off the black surface are a bit distracting.

I still owe you a cuppa at NAM – once we get the stocks replenished after the ‘Victor-crew’ drank us dry at the Autumn Aeroboot!

Yes – a carefully considered spelling in light of a recent encounter outside a park in Arnold!! 😀
