Like with many things on here you will hear views, for and against!
I personally believe that Accreditation (formerly Registration) is an important tool to encourage good practice and highlight to people that you acquire and dispose of things to accepted national standards.
If you are looking for major grant funding e.g. from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) etc. it will also greatly simplify that process. At Newark Air Museum (NAM) I know that being a Registered Museum was a major factor in helping to secure £453,000 of HLF grant for Hangar 2.
NAM has also just started processing its application for the latest phase of Museum Accreditation under the new A.C.E. criteria.
I would suggest that you arrange to meet your Museum Development Officer and start discussing the process.
