Last day of the Half-Term Open Cockpits event

The recent roof repairs to Display Hangar 1 have stood up well to last nights deluge, and everywhere seems relatively dry despite the damp conditions outside. Would just like to remind any potential visitors that there’s lots to see inside at NAM!

Also don’t forget that today is the last day of the Half-Term Open Cockpits event – today both the Vulcan and Shackleton will be open, details here!

Cockpit-Fest 2010 – 19 & 20 June

Just back from Newark where I noticed some road signs advising about the Kit Car Show taking place on the Showground during Cockpit-Fest weekend; although this event doesn’t normally cause too many traffic issues it might be worthwhile allowing a bit more time if travelling to Cockpit-Fest 2010!

…. Should DG RAFM not be pushing for some official educational recognition of the skills required to run/organise/clean a provincial (or national) aviation museum??? Everbody wants ‘Qualifications’. Should there not be one for Aviation Museums?
Just a thought.

The person placing the first wreath inthe video clip is David Ojala the nephew of Flt Sgt Richard Staples (Wireless Op) on Lancaster JB125. 🙂

IIRC there were copies of David Needham’s book in the NAM Shop on Sunday.

There were also copies of the new Lady Helen Nall book about the Hoveringham Lancaster crashes that had memorials dedicated at the weekend.

Radpoe,

If you PM me an email address I’ll send you an article text about a Wireless Operator from Worksop who declined to fly in the Stirling EH988 that is commemorated at Anneseley.

EH988 was ex-1661 HCU and was being flown from RAF Winthorpe to Northern Ireland for scrapping. Recovered fragments from EH988, which crashed on the Musters Estate are stored in a small wooden casket at Newark Air Museum.

News Page Updates

A couple of updates have just gone live on the News Page of the museum website.

One details a couple of new books that have just come into the Museum Shop; whilst the other provides an Aeroboot update that includes details of someone travelling over from New Zealand, with his range of flight-manuals on-CD ROM.

It was a great dedication service, in a stunning riverside location with a tremendous turnout of people; it’s a shame that the windy conditions prevented the flypast this afternoon.

I was stood next to two New Zealand realtives of Guy Dunlop and Richard Staples from JBI25, who were both very moved by the gathering.

Helen Nall’s book “The Courage of the Small Hours” looks to be an excellent read.
